In .NET 3.5 SP1, performance problems (such as CPU consumption and generally sluggishness) were especially noticeable when scrolling within an application that contains many visual elements and if UIA client applications are running.  Performance  depends on machine speed and how many elements are in an application’s visual tree.

This is typical on Tablet and other touch-enabled machines because the Accessibility client TabTip.exe (the "Tablet PC Input Panel") is running by default.  It is also possible on non-tablet machines since any machine can run UI Automation client app (for example, UI Spy, Narrator, Magnifier, etc) or have devices connected that also use UI Automation (for example, Wacom touch & pen input type device)

This hotfix optimizes how WPF respond to UIA automation events and can significantly improve performance in above scenarios.

Please note that the .exe download is for Windows XP/Windows Server 2003, the 6.0 MSU files are for Vista and Windows Server 2008, and the 6.1 MSU files are for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Evaluation versions of Visual Studio 2008 may not provide license upgrade option on some computers running Windows 7. The following fix (KB 979576) will re-enable the Upgrade option in maintenance mode of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Setup (Professional and Team Suite editions). Users running RTM version of Visual Studio 2008 must first upgrade the product to Service Pack 1 release from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120192.

The fix addresses the Upgrade issue for the product setup launched from Windows Add/Remove Programs dialog. Visual Studio 2008 setup launched from installation media remains unaffected.

FIX: Typelibrary generation fails on Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.dll 

SYMPTOMS:
Attempting to generate typelibrary information on the Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.dll assembly may fail in several different ways. 

Using the regasm.exe utility to generate and register the typelibrary can result in the following error:

   RegAsm: error RA000 : Type library exporter encountered an erro while processing "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.SVsSolutionObject,

   Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop". Error: Type 'SVsSolutionObject' and type 'SVsSolution' both have the same UUID. 

Using the TlbExp.exe utility to generate a typelibrary may result in the following error:

   TlbExp : error TX0000 : Type library exporter encountered an error while processing

   'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.SVsSolutionObject, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop'.

   Error: Type 'SVsSolutionObject' and type 'SVsSolution' both have the same UUID. 

When a Visual Studio package implements a property collection exposed by EnvDTE.DTE.Properties and the collection it exposes is on an object that uses a type from the interop assemblies, the runtime will fail to construct the requisite in memory typelibrary for the assembly. For example, the following Visual Studio macro referencing the DTE.Properties collection will fail with an error dialog.

FIX:  This hotfix addresses a performance problem when stepping through Source Code downloaded via a Microsoft Reference Source Server.  Additionally, this hotfix prevents an unnecessary EULA dialog that can occur repeatedly on debugger startup.

This patch is installable on 32-bit and 64-bit systems.  If installed on a 64-bit Vista or later system, a manual step is required to be performed after installing the patch.  Create an empty file using notepad called “symsrv.yes” that resides next to symsrv.dll.  By default this file is installed in the following locations:

[InstallDrive]\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\Remote Debugger\ia64
