run SOFA  Who Cares?   Favoriting Spinning The Wheel  Cloudshaper  2023  LEARNED FROM THE WORST: Post Punk from Belgium. he unique, dreamy, and sometimes slightly ironic indie pop of (run) SOFA captivates immensely. This incredibly musical band from across the language border surprises with complex arrangements, distinctive rhythms, and delightful songwriting. Fresh as freshly dewy grass...musical mayhem from across the language border: we have a soft spot for that. They may have a different sound than, say, Robbing Millions, Le Colisée, and La Jungle. Dreamy, melancholic, and yet complex: that is what the trio from Charleroi sounds like. So, not just another indie band. Fun fact: the band recorded their EP Shenanigans with Ghent native Koen Gisen. Another testament to this band's musical ingenuity.    0:01:51 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Herpes  Müde   Favoriting Symptome und Beschwerden  Tapete  2011  The 80’s are back, let there no be doubt about it. Some seek it in minimal synth, some go for post-punk and thank God, no one so far wants to reincarnate Kid Creole & The Coconuts. A part of those 80’s was of course Die Neue Deutsche Welle. It’s no coincidence that Herpes (what a name for a band!) supported last year Fehlfarben on their reunion tour as this Berlin-based band seek their influences in that particular genre even if you definitely can smell a love for punk as well. Did we hear someone whispering the name of Spider Murphy Gang? A comparison like that kind of makes sense as singer Florian is the sort of front man who doesn’t takes himself that serious. “Symptome und Beschwerden” has in the German press often been described as art-punk as well, and why not? You can hear definitely some Devo or Gang Of Four.    0:05:14 (MP3 | Pop-up)
La Securité  Snack City   Favoriting Bingo!  Mothland  2026  "Snack City" is noted as one of the band's more fidgety punk songs. It follows title track "Bingo", released in February, and is accompanied by a video directed by the band’s regular visual collaborator Philippe Beauséjour.Speaking about the video concept, Beauséjour says: “The band wanted a music video with images taken from their cell phones, including photos and videos from their tours. I found the challenge great fun, considering that the most interesting content was already done. So, I created a universe inspired by scrapbooking, using what I could find in my multiple 60s and 90s cookbooks. I still wanted to bring a touch of animation, by constructing Éliane’s face several times with food. It’s a little inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Summer.” Bingo! is released on 12 June via Bella Union  *   0:07:52 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Fresh Guayaba Juice  Mañana no sé que pasará   Favoriting Single  Sindicato del Cringe  2025  Nobody Knows what's happening tomorrow...and the internet knows little about this band, despite one full length and and ep release. We do like fresh Guava juice tho! Other musical Guavas include: Guava Tree: A psychedelic rock band based in Utah known for blending genres like funk, soul, and rock. Guava Jelly: A song written by Bob Marley (often associated with reggae/rocksteady) that has been covered by artists such as Johnny Nash and Barbra Streisand. Atomic Guava: A progressive rock/metal band that released the album Peasants of the Future in 2022. Guava (Artist): A London-based multi-instrumentalist producer known for mixing live guitar with electronic sounds....and of course Ween's PURE GUAVA. Brown sound at it's finest!!!    0:10:48 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Ugly Mac Beer, Fabrice Gilbert  Bastille Vichy   Favoriting Broken III  Beatsqueeze Records  2024  A leading light in French breakbeat and the founder of Beatsqueeze Records, Ugly Mac Beer exists in a unique world which, loosely, could be argued to include the likes of Dalek, Flying Lotus, DJ Shadow, and Aphex Twin. As such, you can expect a perma-shifting mix of lo-fi, hip-hop, and break beat, which coalesce to form soundscapes quite unlike anything else you’ll hear this year. Truly unique, Broken Ill finds Ugly Mac Beer exploring hip-hop and punk, electro and rock, ambient and breakbeat seamlessly across the twelve tracks on offer. With perfect production, it sounds amazing (especially on vinyl), the disparate elements somehow woven into a sonic tapestry that you just want to play over and over again. Most importantly, the record is fun, the quirky shifts and effortlessly cool delivery nodding to records like Mellow Gold and Hello Nasty – similarly genre-hopping entities that defy categorisation, while remaining endlessly playable.    0:13:15 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Smudged  Live A Little   Favoriting Calls From The Hull Vol III  V11  2023  Smudged (often referred to as Smudged Toads) is a Rotterdam-based band known for an explosive, chaotic blend of krautrock, hard electronics, post-punk, and garage rock. Emerging from the local DIY scene around 2015-2016, they are recognized as a high-energy, unpredictable live act, blending hypnotic synth patterns with raw noise. Risen from the primordial ooze of Rotterdam’s dampened DIY-caverns, Smudged scramble the very fabric of krautrock, noise punk, electronic pop and techno to new kinetic heights. Their offbeat live shows structurally unfold in novel forms of madness & mayhem. The band’s initial flurry of singles – including the Death Grips-esque “Upside Down / Inside Out”, downer post-punk anthem “Stupid” and live favorite “Hypnotized” – are the perfect blend of camp and creativity, leaving crowds both confused and amped out of their minds. Smudged seasoned their explosive sound further on their 2022 self-titled EP. Now operating at full throttle, their shows have become the stuff of legend, always devising new wacky ways to rile up crowds – only to still win them over in the end.    0:16:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Deutsche Vita  ROCKERS   Favoriting DV2  Stranuttzo Music  2026  Hot on the heels of their recent album release, hardworking German Neue Deutsche Welle band releases a new single. It's dark, sleek, edgy, sexy...with a refrain of WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?!  *   0:19:25 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Foamball  Mayonaise   Favoriting Caiperinha Remix 3000  La Nave  2026  Love this song. Anything with mouth trumpet has me going these days. And again...that solid bass riff just kicking things off so well. The duck quacks really send it over the top tho. Why are all the best bands mystery bands? I'm guessing this has to be from the Netherlands. It's got that Nederlander mouth trumpet feel, and they do love their Mayonnaise.....  *   0:22:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Shrompe  Calcium   Favoriting Calcium  Self Released  2022  Another mystery band that is just so goddamn good. We know they are german. And they probably like milk. aily intake requirements vary, typically between 1,000–1,200 mg for adults, found in dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods. Excessive intake may cause constipation and kidney stones, requiring a balanced diet over over-supplementation So just heads up there.    0:24:04 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Sam Snitchy  Throw It Out   Favoriting Two Horse Force  Voodoo Rhythm  2026  Sam Snitchy is the newest moniker employed by the Swiss gent once known as Maniporno. Also known as Melker, a handle slapped on the cover of two full-length releases, a recurring characteristic of his current sound is the blending of punk scuzz with electronics of assorted stylistic stripes. 2 Horse Forse, the third release as Sam Snitchy, is a wild ride, hitting stores on March 13 through the Voodoo Rhythm label. He’s been described more than once in print as an “anti-dance” specialist, but there’s a hyperactive quality to his stuff, and specifically in 2 Horse Force’s opener “Throw It Out,” that registers as appropriate for body flailing.Snitchy is loose and confident as a singer, recalling the swagger that was part of punk in its early days. Across 2 Horse Force, Sam Snitchy doesn’t rip up the rulebook but instead scrawls their own chapter in the margins.  *   0:26:24 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Keith Mansfield  Pop Package   Favoriting KPM Series 1000: Contemporary Colour  KPM Music Ltd.  1970      0:30:07 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Jah Wobble & Jon Klein  Endless Sky   Favoriting Automated Paradise  Dimple Discs  2026  "Having initially combined forces to make the album ‘Metal Box – Rebuilt In Dub,’ released in 2021, Jah Wobble and Jon Klein have maintained their association both live and creating new music in the studio. This has resulted in ‘Automated Paradise,’ their third album together released March 27, 2026. ........................... Jah Wobble (born John Wardle) is a renowned bass guitarist and vocalist from East London. He was the original bassist in Public Image Ltd (PiL) in the late seventies, formed The Invaders Of The Heart, has collaborated with Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit from Can and The Edge from U2. He has worked with Ginger Baker, Bjork, Brian Eno, Massive Attack, Sinead O’Connor, Pharoah Sanders, Lonelady and his wife Zi Lan Liao, a Chinese guzheng player and harpist. ...................... Jon Klein is a guitarist and producer best known for being a member of Siouxsie and the Banshees and had originally been in the Bristol-based Europeans before forming glam-goth act Specimen and relocating to London where he was involved with The Batcave night club. Klein has recorded and played live with a wide variety of artists that include Talvin Singh, Shriekback, Sinead O’Connor and Thomas Dolby while his production company Ground Control has overseen recordings by the likes of David Devant and His Spirit Wife and Spanish chart toppers Fangoria. ........... `Endless Sky` is rapidly and hurriedly assigned and may refer to a boundless, vast expanse, symbolising limitless, eternal space or freedom. A philosophical metaphor maybe for the infinite universal essence that sustains all existence. There`s some sweet, percussion, a guiding bass line and odd synth shades giving it a jazz like ambience." https://wardle.bandcamp.com/album/  *   0:41:52 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Caberet Voltaire  Sensoria (Live)   Favoriting But What Time Is It Really?  Memetune  2026  Released April 24, 2026. "But What Time Is It Really? features live versions of tracks from across Cabaret Voltaire’s back catalogue. In memory of Richard H Kirk, the album was recorded during the band’s 2025 UK tour - marking 50 years since the project’s formation - by a line-up of Stephen Mallinder, Chris Watson, Eric Random and Oliver Harrap." ......................................................... From Spill Magazine: Cabaret Voltaire, initially consisting of Richard Kirk, Chris Watson, and Stephen Mallinder, is an English techno music group that experienced a degree of success with their song “Sensoria” in 1984, which was a perfect anthem to hear during the burgeoning underground dance movement of the 80’s. .......................... With the revival of interest in all things 80’s, Kirk, now the sole member of the band, was given an offer by the Coachella Festival in 2017 to reunite the band but decided against it. Kirk proclaimed, “Cabaret Voltaire was always about breaking new ground and moving forward. It would be so sad to see it as a nostalgia act.” ........................ Four years after Kirk’s death in 2021, Cabaret Voltaire has now become that nostalgia act that Kirk did not desire. Watson and Mallinder performed as Cabaret Voltaire in 2025 at the Sensoria Festival in hometown Sheffield and soon announced both a new tour and live album from their shows. ............................. But What Time Is It Really? is a recording of live music during Voltaire’s UK tour in 2025 with no new compositions apart from the track “Tinsley Viaduct,” which is best described as an experimental art piece that encapsulates the spirit behind the band. ....................... Mallinder stated that they wanted this album to act as a tribute to Kirk’s craftmanship and efforts into the work behind Cabaret Voltaire. The album recreates selections of the band’s musical catalogue from various points since its inception and for a live recording, it is a glorious electronica soundscape. ................................. The album successfully captures the trio’s experimental creations, a nod to the original Cabaret Voltaire, a 1916 nightclub in Zurich where artists gathered to perform non-traditional spoken word, music, and dance that mirrored the chaos and confusion of World War I, and a was a protest to society’s need to conform. The recording of “Do Right” on But What Time Is It Really? is a highlight the band’s effort to join this dissension. ..................... Kirk would have been proud of Watson and Mallinder’s efforts."  *   0:46:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Druty  Wyznanie   Favoriting Bies  Syf Records  2026  Released April 14, 2026 ----- As per their BC:"The new album from the Szczecin-Dutch duo Druty. “Bies” winds its way like a dark stream of energy that catches you off guard and transports you to a “different” state. Is it better? Not necessarily. Do you want to try it again? Maybe. ..................... Druty:Maarten Bakker-Bron // Kedar Ockos ........ Recorded in Summer 2025 ........... Opus Kink  The Head Tree ft. The New Eves   Favoriting The Sweet Goodbye  So Recordings  2026  This track released April 29, in advance of the July album...."Opus Kink have released "The Head Tree," featuring The New Eves, the latest single from their upcoming debut album, The Sweet Goodbye. ...................... "The Head Tree" sees the two Brighton bands come together to combine Opus Kink's jazz and country-inspired punk with The New Eves' folk-punk, self-described "Hagstone rock" ................................... Speaking about the new song, vocalist and guitarist Angus Rogers says: “In 1685 Alice Molland was the last woman to be tried and hanged as a witch in England, strung up on a ‘HeadTree’ just outside of Exeter. Now, from her burial place underneath an Aldi carpark in the town of Heavitree, she summons the spirits of her fallen sisters-in-sin-Mary Trembles, Temperance Lloyd and Susannah Edwards-as well as, for some reason, the spirit of the Bee Gees, in order to tell her tale. Uttered through the coerced mouths of Opus Kink and The New Eves.”"  *   0:54:51 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Violent Femmes  Candlelight Song (Remastered 2026)   Favoriting The Blind Leading The Naked (Remastered 2026)  Slash Records / Craft Recordings  1986 / 2026  "The Blind Leading the Naked is the third album by Violent Femmes. It was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads and released in 1986. The title is a play on the figure of speech "the blind leading the blind." ........................ The Blind Leading the Naked was the band's first album to reach the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 84, and its only one to chart in Britain. ........................ A version labeled Remastered 2026 with release date April 10, 2026 appeared for download only at Bandcamp.com and streaming on Amazon Music and includes previously import-only bonus track "World Without Mercy" as the final song. A yellow color-vinyl release scheduled for Record Store Day in U.S.A., Saturday, April 18, 2026 appears not to include the extra song. ........................ Production and recording: The band said Leo Kottke and Fred Frith were both persuaded to appear on the album after approaching them at their concerts. "I just went along and asked him if he'd like to come down and try something out in the studio," Ritchie said of Frith. ........................... Members of the band said they were unhappy with the choice of Harrison as producer, with Ritchie saying, "We knew Jerry and he'd seen us live and, uh, he didn't like it... And when I heard the reasons that he didn't like it, well, they were the reasons why we do like it! We didn't think he was right to produce music as weird as ours." Gano further claimed that Harrison had been suggested by Warners "solely on the basis that he lives in Milwaukee, because we'd stipulated to them that we had to record there. This was outrageous from their point of view." Elsewhere, Gano added, "We've always been really sloppy. On this album we tried to clean it up a little bit. That's what Jerry's into. He's interested in what would be considered technically a good sound."""    0:59:15 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Empanadas Ilegales  Gher Bede (Myles Bigelow Remix)   Favoriting Sancocho Trifásico Remixes  We Are Time  2026  "Vancouver’s genre-defying Psychedelic Cumbia and Salsa ensemble, Empanadas Ilegales, have released a surprise remix collection of tracks off their acclaimed 2025 album, Sancocho Trifásico. .................. The E.P. kicks off with an acid-house tinged reimagining of “Suto Ta Kandá”. Rooted in the Palenquero language and Afro-Colombian tradition, the track blends cumbia-driven percussion with psychedelic tropical textures. The Colombian based INDUS flips it into a deeper electronic and experimental space while keeping its spirit intact. .................... Bagota's Romperayo push the colours of "Chanzelatazo" creating a head-spinning atmosphere of tropical rhythms. Miami's Falquit lays on thick bass, prepping "Bailecito de MORD" for the afterparty dance floor. ............... Empanadas Ilegales deliver an unparalleled live performance, and have a busy summer ahead with several high profile festival appearances including Vancouver Folk Festival and Salt Spring Island's Yerba Fest." .......................... "A visionary in the world of music, Myles is a highly disciplined percussionist, producer, songwriter, DJ, and vocalist who began his journey at just 11, mastering the African Djembe under a legendary mentor. By 14, his talent was spotlighted in the documentary “Spirit Of The Drum,” which aired on The Discovery Channel for decades. At 17, he clinched the soloist competition at the prestigious Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, leading to scholarships at Berklee College of Music and Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana. Myles studied with drum masters such as Giovanni Hidalgo, Armando Peraza, Alex Acuna, Yaroldy Abreu, John Santos, Bobby Allende & many others. ............... Myles' illustrious career has seen him tour and collaborate with award-winning artists, including Latin Grammy and Juno winners. His solo career, launched in 2008, boasts ten groundbreaking albums, 40 singles, and over 50 electrifying remixes, blending percussion, production, songwriting, and vocals into an unforgettable live experience. His performances have lit up stages from Miami to Montreal, Los Angeles to Alaska, captivating audiences with his unique fusion of sounds." ......................... https://empanadasilegales.bandcamp.com/  *   1:02:30 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Is Noise, Vol. 3

Purplish Records

2026

"TAKAAT (pronounced tuh-cot), meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek, is the trio of Ahmoudou Madassane, Mikey Coltun, and Souleymane Ibrahim, also known as the rhythm section of Mdou Moctar." ............. Released March 6: "With bass drones cranked way past 11, frantic guitar shredding passages, and blown out drum machines, TAKAAT’s ‘Is Noise Vol. 3’ poses the question, ‘what if the Tuareg songwriting legends Tinariwen started a band with drone-lords Sunn O)))? Well, that might be what ‘Is Noise Vol. 3’ kinda sounds like. ...................... Drawing from sonic inspiration of blown out Takamba recordings of the Sahel, slinky drum machines of Hausa pop mp3s, and manipulated field recordings collected in Agadez, Niger, ‘Is Noise Vol. 3’ is yet another exciting musical departure from its prior volume. ..................... TAKAAT was birthed from the idea of always evolving concepts and taking risks, seeing each volume as an opportunity to explore noisy futures steeped in a shared language of DIY. Through chronological limited 10” EPs you too can take the noise home. Play it loud." -Mikey ..................... https://takaat.bandcamp.com/

The Homesick  Esperanto   Favoriting Esperanto  Siluh Records  2026  Dutch art-pop trio the Homesick (Elias Elgersma, Jaap van der Velde, and Erik Woudwijk) are back with a quirky little single "Esperanto." The new song arrives alongside the announcement that they signed to independent Austrian label Siluh Records."Esperanto" is wacky in a new wave/Devo way. It has rubbery synths and bouncy vocal shouts. The title is a reference to an "international language" created by L. L. Zamenhof in the late 1800s. His goal was to create an approachable universal second language and build a "community of speakers." Elgersma shared that the band played "Esperanto" live for over a year with improvised lyrics. "I always just sang ''Esperanto'', no clue why. While recording I came up with a short little lyric about Nostradamus. For some reason Nostradamus reminded me of Lejzer Zamenhof, the guy who invented the language of Esperanto. What they both have in common is that they both became famous historical figures with kinda useless stuff; inventing a pointless language and predicting nonsense. In the studio (my livingroom) we added layers to make it more disco-y and Jaap came up with a guitar line at the end in the style of Echo and the Bunnymen..."  *   1:17:46 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Saigon  Night Fever (Who Could've Known)   Favoriting Ready For Romance?  Saigon  2013  Uhh huuh huuuh...Love this song!!! Saigon started in the autumn of 2010 as a last resort in the otherwise cold and lost city of Berlin. The bands equipment played a prominent role on the sound of their first songs and the first tracks where recorded with just one microphone, one guitar, a small battery amp and one synth. The lo-fi sound created has continued to make a large affect on how they have continued to make music. They have released two cassettes and now live in Stockholm where they are a part of the autonomous artist collective Tropiska Föreningen. A large part of the record consists of broken cassette overdubs, cheap synthesizers and digital effects of previous generations. Hard Suicide-minimalism and echoes of noise music are offset with warm, dreamy synthpads and naive hitty melodies. Ultimately everything collides in something without inhibitions, that unrestrained throws itself between the feeling of the world ending - and of having Piña Coladas in a sunny living room. The good people at Jiggers designed eight cocktails for the project, each matched by a track from Reinhard and Charlotte. The music is on here is highly eclectic, ranging from dusty soul-pop and oddball synth-funk to grand dream-stirring indie-pop that sounds like it would have come out of Paris in the 80’s. The duo worked with drummers Gert Malfliet and Giovanni Barcella on the album, with Vanbergen performing the rest of the instruments, and Caluwaerts singing on all tracks. Reinhard Vanbergen started his musical career in the band das pop. A graduate as master in jazz violin.. His voice, with its icy glam undertones, alternates between commanding dominance and tender caresses, imbuing the tracks with a sense of timelessness. David Shaw and The Beat is the solo project of Manchester-born, France/Brussels-based musician David Shaw, blending indie, techno, and cold wave. Known for his work in Blackstrobe and DBFC, Shaw mixes punk energy with electronic club music. Bruch  Fool The Fool   Favoriting The Fool  Cutsurface  2020  arranged songs, but also as a revue of pop’s archetypes. In virtually manic manner, Bruch pulls all styles of music that are suitable for his purposes into an irresistible vortex of grim opalescent emotions and uses them to turn his deep and haunting thoughts into music. While some of Bruch’s songs keep oscillating between cheerful pop/ rhythm & blues and murky hip hop/ industrial, others take the fast lane to the ogre end of the spectrum. A romantic ride in a ferris wheel, as much as being jiggled by a breakneck rollercoaster. The lowest point becomes the climax, bile turns into an elixir of life, a curse into a blessing. The Fool’s mission is striving forwards and disarming: existential intimacy as a strategy and weapon.    1:33:37 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Age Of Chance  How The West Was Won   Favoriting BBC Sessions 85-87  Precious Recordings of London  1985 / 2026  Age of Chance BBC sessions 85-87 New album on Precious Recordings of London Pre-order from Friday May 1 Released Monday June 8................................ "A stunning mix of Northern Soul, machine-like beats, electroclash, slogans and agitpop, Age of Chance were one of the most exciting groups to emerge during the C86 era. They certainly didn’t sound like anybody else, that’s for sure. ......................... An uncompromising live act, Age of Chance were frantic and frenetic – and they even dallied with the mainstream via their version of Prince’s Kiss. Janglepop this is not. .................................. Now, not before time, their three sessions for BBC Radio 1 are collected by Precious Recordings of London as part of the label’s ongoing series. And for good measure, we’ve included both sides of their first two incredible groundbreaking singles – Motorcity and Bible Of The Beats, both unavailable in any form for decades. ............................. “That time was so exciting,” recalls frontman Steve Elvidge. “From the moment Peel played Motorcity the day after he received it, to working up Kiss specially for the second session. We all loved it and danced to it, but we wanted it to have our sound – the guitars, the hip-hop beats. I wished we’d recorded How The West Was Won on the first LP. It’s still one of the best things we’ve done.” .......................... Guitarist Neil Howson described the progression of the BBC recordings, saying: “In the first session we’d focussed on a percussive and rhythmic sound, and into the second, we’d developed a broader scope, added open chords, harmonics and dynamic breaks. That informed From Now On, This Will Be Your God, which we wrote for C86; we wanted to experiment and try something more extreme than just a pop song. ............................ “The best example of that is How The West Was Won, which is almost cinematic. It feels like an echoing, symphonic wall of sound.” ....................... Age of Chance – BBC sessions 85-87 is available in a limited edition of 500 copies on 12-inch vinyl, with unseen images and sleeve notes" ............................... Precious Recordings of London is an Independent label / record company based in Putney, London, UK. Run by former horse racing journalist Nick Godfrey, Precious Recordings Of London specialises in releasing "historical" BBC radio sessions (formerly on double 7" vinyl, now 10"). The brand / name is inspired by the Dexys Midnight Runners' song "Let's Make This Precious".  *   1:46:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Embarrassment  Death Travels West   Favoriting Heyday 1979-83  Bar None Records  1983 / 1995  "American punk rock quartet formed in 1979 in Wichita, Kansas, and disbanded in 1983. The band described themselves as "Blister Pop." The group has reunited for regional performances on multiple occasions, first in the mid-late 1980s, which yielded the God Help Us session; again between 2006 and 2008; and most recently in June 2023 after a screening of the documentary We Were Famous, You Don't Remember: The Embarrassment. The early 2000s performances included the original lineup of Nichols, Goffrier, and Giessmann, along with Eric Cale on bass, while the most recent live lineup consisted of Nichols, Goffrier, Cale, and Britt Rosencutter on drums." .................. "Recorded in late 1982 (apparently October 30) at Crystal Clear Sound, Dallas according to the release notes on Heyday; produced by Michael McGee, Jim Rosencutter, and The Embarrassment. A version of "Sex Drive" was reportedly attempted, but didn't gel too well. The version of "D-Rings" on this record was live to two-track; the band liked the first listen of this song so much, they were afraid they wouldn't be able to match the raw power in re-mix, so left it as is. ...................................... For the artwork on this 12" sleeve, the band commissioned their artist-bassist-friend Eric Cale. Eric based the "deathwagon" on Ron’s red Chevy wagon, and completed two painted versions as well as the logo which the band loved. Sketch and graphic versions of the wagon were later used in gig posters. Somewhat ironically, Cale was later employed as the caretaker of a graveyard. The record had a paper insert with some band information on one side, and the so-called "Dirty Room" picture labeled "The Embarrassment" featuring John Nichols in his basement bachelor pad. ................................. Also called a "mini-LP" in some circles, Death Travels West was the longest-playing issue the Embos put out in their first incarnation, and arguably the strongest set of work put out by the Embos. In one of the classic instances of bad timing in the music industry, the Embos had broken up by the time the critical praise had started in for this record. There were favorable reviews in publications ranging from The Village Voice to Playboy, and critical praise continued to mount over the succeeding months. It remains, many years after its release, a pop masterpiece and perhaps one of the true high points in the independent record movement in the 1980s. Original vinyl of this record sells for as much as $80 in pristine condition, even though all the songs have since been re-released on Heyday - perhaps for the sound on vinyl, perhaps for the excellent artwork. ....................... The record has been considered by fans a loose conceptual album centered around the notion of traveling, a theme which recurs in a lot of Embos songs, and has a vaguely "frontier" or western theme with overtones of horror and science fiction. The band has since disclaimed any intention towards making a "concept" album, but the persistence of some themes and imagery makes it hard to resist this notion."    1:48:54 (MP3 | Pop-up)
R.E.M.  West Of The Fields (Live At Larry's Hideaway, Toronto (1983))   Favoriting Murmur - Deluxe Edition  I.R.S. / Universal Records  1983 / 2008  From the second disc of 2008's Deluxe Version of Murmur featuring a full set recorded Live At Larry's Hideaway, Toronto in July 1983 & capturing early R.E.M. at the height of their youthful swagger, bite and snarl. ......................... "Larry's Hideaway was a bar in the Prince Carlton Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The venue was notable for being one of the first venues in Toronto to open itself to punk and new wave music acts, as well as hard rock. The venue was well known for its good acoustics. Several artists recorded live albums at the venue. ...................... The bar was located in the basement of the Prince Carlton Hotel on the north-west corner of Allan Gardens, on Carlton Street at Jarvis Street. .................... The room was a restaurant prior to 1961, when it became a jazz venue. .................. Starting in the late 1970s, the venue was booked by the "Two Garys", Gary Topp and Gary Cormier, who also booked bands to "The Edge" venue and to the Horseshoe Tavern. The bar had a dirty, un-clean reputation although bands reputedly loved to play there." ................ Fun fact: "In a rare instance of R.E.M. co-writing, Stipe asked friend Neil Bogan to contribute lyrics to "West of the Fields"."    1:53:46 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Clash  Gates Of The West   Favoriting The Cost of Living (EP)  CBS  1979  "The Cost of Living is an EP by the English punk rock band the Clash. It was released on 11 May 1979 in a gatefold sleeve. The EP was produced by the band and Bill Price. It marked a transition in musical styles for the band, bridging the intensity of their earlier, punky albums with the broader, more American-influenced rock and roll yet to come on London Calling, most evident on the folk rocking "Groovy Times" and "Gates of the West". ................... The Clash's cover of Sonny Curtis' "I Fought the Law" remained in the band's live set list for much of the rest of their career. Joe Strummer also performed it with his later bands, including during his stint with the Pogues. The early single "Capital Radio" was re-recorded because the band learned that copies of the original Capital Radio EP were selling for high prices. "Capital Radio", later listed as "Capital Radio Two", is much longer, mainly because of a protracted outro. ..................... "Gates of the West" clearly describes the ecstasy of the Clash in their first encounter with the United States: "Eastside Jimmy & Southside Sue both said they needed something new". "From Camden Town Station to 44th & 8th" describes their journey from their London neighbourhood to the middle of Manhattan. ........................ It was recorded at Wessex Studios in Highbury in London, and features "extra high vocal" credited to Dennis Ferranti and harmonica credited to "Bob Jones" (a pseudonym of Mick Jones)."    1:56:54 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry  West Wakes Up   Favoriting Blow  Situation Two / Beggars Banquet / RCA  1989  "Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, also known very briefly as the Lorries, are an English rock band formed in Leeds in early 1981 by guitarist and songwriter Chris Reed, vocalist Mark Sweeney, bassist Steve Smith and drummer Mick Brown. After breaking up in 1991, the band reformed in 2003 and have released 6 studio albums over the course of their career. ..................... The band was formed by guitarist/songwriter Chris Reed and vocalist Mark Sweeney, along with bassist Steve Smith and drummer Mick Brown (who would later join The Mission). Sweeney left the band in late 1981 and Reed permanently took over as vocalist, with Martin Fagan joining as a second guitarist. The group's sound, featuring a numbing guitar drone, powerfully throbbing bass, pounding drum machine, and Reed's cavernous vocal tones, caused the Lorries (as their fans came to call them) to be quickly lumped into the then-developing gothic rock scene by pop journalists, although the band themselves denied they were ever associated with goth and preferred to cite Wire as an influence, and said they "were primarily inspired by MC5." ................ In 1982, the Lorries' manager Dave Hall provided independent record label Red Rhino with a cassette of the group's demos. Impressed by the quality of the songs, Red Rhino label head "Tony K" (Tony Kostrzewa) signed the band and immediately released "Beating My Head" unchanged from the demo as the band's debut single. The song made a strong appearance on the influential NME independent record chart. Fagan and Smith soon departed the band, to be replaced by Dave Wolfenden and Paul Southern respectively. Afterwards, bassist Southern was replaced by Leon Phillips. While numerous additional personnel changes would occur in the history of the band, Wolfenden became a mainstay and a frequent songwriting partner of Reed's during the band's most productive period............................ 1989's "Blow is the fourth studio album by British rock band Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, released in 1989, and their last LP on the Beggars Banquet offshoot label, Situation Two, in the UK. In the US it was released by Beggars Banquet/RCA. .................. The album was a slight change in direction for the band. While it still had the band's customary swirling rush of guitars, pounding drums, loud bass and Chris Reed's deep growling vocals, the songs were a little slower, with stronger, more conventional melodies sweetened by occasional female backing vocals. Reed's lyrics were less downbeat, almost optimistic. As critics noted, overall Blow is a warmer album than the band's previous, somewhat dour offerings; the Lorries left their specious gothic rock trappings behind for good. Chicago Tribune noted: "There is a strong pop element in the songs` melodies and structures, a danceable energy in faster numbers and some crisp, ringing guitar work in slower tunes. The material, including Reed's flat, low vocals, is still moody, but there is a separation between instruments-and between instruments and vocals-that steers the proceedings well clear of anything that could be labeled wall-of-gloom." Trouser Press agreed, stating that "Blow takes the band a giant step forward in terms of melodicism and diversity of sound. Staying clear of the old monochromatic wall of noise, the production gives them plenty of punch and much more warmth...""    2:00:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Wall Of Voodoo  Call Of The West   Favoriting Call Of The West  I.R.S.  1982  "Wall of Voodoo was an American rock band from Los Angeles, California who were active from 1977 until disbanding in 1989. Though largely an underground act for the majority of its existence, the band came to prominence when its 1982 single "Mexican Radio" became a hit on MTV and alternative radio. The band was known for surrealist lyrics drawing on iconography of the American Southwest. ...................... Wall of Voodoo had its roots in Acme Soundtracks, a film score business started by Stan Ridgway, later the vocalist and harmonica player for Wall of Voodoo. Acme Soundtracks' office was across the street from the Hollywood punk club The Masque and Ridgway was soon drawn into the emerging punk/new wave scene. Marc Moreland, guitarist for the Skulls, began jamming with Ridgway at the Acme Soundtracks office and the soundtrack company morphed into a new wave band. In 1977, with the addition of Skulls members Bruce Moreland (Marc Moreland's brother) as bassist and Chas T. Gray as keyboardist, along with Joe Nanini, who had been the drummer for the Bags, the Eyes, and Black Randy and the Metrosquad, the first lineup of the band was born, named Wall of Voodoo before their first show in reference to a comment made by Joe Berardi, a friend of Ridgway's and member of the Fibonaccis. According to Ridgway, "I've always been interested in Phil Spector and his wall-of-sound approach to recording. And Wall of Voodoo seemed to describe best what we were doing."" ............................ "Call of the West is the second studio album by American rock band Wall of Voodoo, released in September 1982. The album contains "Mexican Radio", the group's most well-known song, which was released as a single and whose video received moderate airplay on MTV. .................. In a 1982 Trouser Press review, Jon Young said, "[t]hey're dealing in pure hokum, for sure, but Wall of Voodoo has become very good at it. Atmosphere is all in these muttered tales of desperation and weirdness, suggesting Devo on a bad trip of no return. But Call of the West doesn't repel; it's spooky halloweenish fun.""    2:04:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Billy and Bruce started playing together in The Pop Rivets in 1977. Here we see them still playing together in Thee Headcoats. Hailed as 'the undesputed Kings of Garage Rock' in the New York Times, Thee Headcoats released over 20 LPs between 1989-2000. Thee Headcoatees were initially formed as a backing group for Thee Headcoats, with members Holly Golightly, Kyra LaRubia, Ludella Black and "Bongo" Debbie Green taking to the boards. Monitors  Danse Macabre   Favoriting The Madeleine Affair  Monitors  2025  A band built on friendship across three cultures, that’s the foundation for Monitors; settled in mainland Europe, they combine talent from Liverpool, Bihać, and Paris. When death comes knocking at the door of a Bosnian babushka, nothing goes as planned. Blending folklore and dreamlike visions, Danse Macabre celebrates the fierce will to live and the beauty of endings that might not be final at all. Disparate influences blend together to create the signature Monitors sound, and Danse Macabre is no exception. Here they shake up those ingredients to make a new sonic cocktail; Eastern European folk plays a role, and so does New Wave – think Talking Heads and XTC. The band’s electronic elements become more overt, pushing Monitors’ predilection for techno and electronica into primal EBM. Monitors have rarely sounded so unrestrained, raw, and unpredictable as they do on Danse Macabre.    2:20:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Propter Hoc  There Is No Explanation   Favoriting Surviving Civilisation  Shevek Ansible Records  2022  ‘My primary motive is curiosity, and then I try to make sense of what I discover’ Propter Hoc‘s Scottish artist J.A. Harrington might never have started making music were it not for the Coronavirus pandemic. Like so many others, his focus suddenly shifted, leading him to experiment with sound and songwriting. The response to his early work was quickly and overwhelmingly positive, resulting in a deal with Cold Transmission Records. His music can be described as a dense, danceable blend of EBM, Electro-Wave, and Electro-Pop – an imaginary bridge between 80s influences and contemporary Electronic aesthetics. Through this sound, Harrington constructs a universe in which cause and effect – as his project name suggests – are constantly questioned. "I don’t spend a lot of time looking back on anything really, I would just end up viewing minor embarrassments as huge catastrophes, but basically I became a musician by mistake and you could say I’ve been compounding that error ever since. It has five new songs by the group and a medley of two Gene Vincent covers, "Say Mama" and "Race With the Devil". The title track was previously played live. "Race with the Devil" is not a new recording, but a live performance recorded at the John Peel 50th-anniversary concert back in 1989 with the Extricate lineup; this recording had previously appeared on The Fall Red Box Set 1976-2007. The last song, "Touchy Pad" features Tamsin Middleton of Manchester band Mr Heart on vocals. The release was explained as a bridging point by the record company. The vinyl version features earlier mixes that differ from the CD.[6] The release was followed by a number of live-shows. ................................ The Remainderer was positively received... The Quietus described the title track as "full of mischief and malevolence" and the rest of the EP as "answering the call of the weird". Pitchfork noted the longevity of the line-up as "an encouraging sign that stability has yet to ossify into stagnation with this ongoing iteration of the band, who formidably exercise their elasticity over the course of these six wildly divergent tracks". The Line of Best Fit commented that the EP "isn’t necessarily consistently solid, but it’s decidedly close. Fundamentally though it’s reaffirmation of their aptitude for quantity and quality". NME found the EP to "sound like someone’s brought Elvis back to life"."    2:45:36 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Engineering tactics fully hand-in-glove with the White Fence intent, they produce a clean and uncrowded space to mount up all the rock ‘n balladry, their clean lines surrounded by an emphatic/unalterable (minimalist) frame. ....................................... Tim offers this post-op 'as-per' for Orange: “Love/loss, addiction/rehabilitation, and a good long look in the mirror (by way of a shop window reflection in San Francisco). ..................................... But also the absurdity of life..... I wanted to sing my little heart out. Sing life” ............................ Orange is an unstill life; a bowlful of Tim’s latest conceptions for guitar band, grown larger through thoughts, feelings, SONGS and some keys and synth from Alice Sandhal (+ 2 drum cameos from the ever-righteous Dylan Hadley!). A trance-like chronology of consciousness, captured in opalescent diamond tightness and ice fidelity at Ty’s Harmonizer II studio. It’s a KILLER. White Fence is Orange on time this time!" https://whitefence.bandcamp.com/  *   2:56:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)
