Shh, don't tell, I'm actually just doodling pictures of hot rods and space ships.↳ Rob Marvin @8:51
Rob! Always delightful to see you in the Digital Salon.↳ Imaginos @8:57
Ahoy, Imaginos! My dedicated listener, nearly every week!↳ Song: "Thunder & Lightning" by "Disney collaged with The...
Was this a short track? I feel like I looked up and two other tracks already played↳ Song: "Thunder'n' Lightnin'" by "Hoyt Axton"
My mom worked at a gas station for years, and Hoyt Axton stopped to get gas while passing through Cottage Grove, sometime in the late 80's. My mom talked to him for while, and got his autograph before he had to get a move on.↳ Bandit @9:06
Yes, that was a combination of two track, layered on top of each other.↳ Mr. X @9:02
I recently released a solo tape called "Cacology" which is apparently the study of bad handwriting, and if so, I could teach that class...↳ Austin Rich @9:07
Ah ok!↳ Mr. X @9:04
Mr. X! I think you get a free pass, considering what an "A" student you are, the rest of the time.↳ Bandit @9:06
Yes this was a short Residents track mixed with Disney Sound Effects.↳ Geoff-U @9:04
Geoff-U! You really are the best. I hope you are well.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:07
Where can we hear it? Also this first few tracks is giving SummerWeen vibes↳ Austin Rich @9:08
Aw thanks! I missed last week because reasons but I'm here now. I'm gonna cook dinner but I will have this on the Bluetooth speaker↳ Bandit @9:08
Actually it was a cassette limited to around 30 copies with handwritten and hand-drawn covers, for subscribers only, and only a few tracks were previously available on bandcamp... for subscribers... but thanks!↳ Song: "Mystery Man" by "Todd Andrews"
That opening riff was almost Sesame Street...↳ Austin Rich @9:11
The same is true for Manchester from Hair↳ Arvo Zylo @9:11
Gave your bandcamp a follow!↳ JM in Texas @9:11
When JM shows up, you know you're onto the right party.↳ postconsumer @9:11
postconsumer! Thanks for the great show from The Wiggle Room.↳ Song: "Mystery Man" by "Todd Andrews"

↳ Arvo Zylo @9:13
Ahhh. That image didn't have other info on it, so I couldn't connect it with a song.↳ Austin Rich @9:12
Thx, Austin - hope the summer has been treating you well!↳ postconsumer @9:13
Thank you for sticking around! Have a great night!↳ Austin Rich @9:14
It does for me, when I look in the playlist file. Fishy...↳ JM in Texas @9:14
Hi JM!↳ JM in Texas @9:14
I'm hanging in there. It's been a terrible year so far.↳ Bandit @9:12
Thank you!↳ Arvo Zylo @9:15
Hello↳ Austin Rich @9:15
Sorry to hear that, Austin. If there's anything I can do, just say the word, of course.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:15
It just says, "Song Poem Insanity," on the file. I didn't realize that "Mystery Man" track was a song poem.↳ Austin Rich @9:15
I wish I could help! I appreciate your service to the nation! And to the outer regions!↳ Austin Rich @9:15
Sorry to hear that, hate that you’ve been dealing with stuff……stay positive and keep moving forward!↳ Geoff-U @9:19
For sure. I probably have to go back to Corvallis soon, so hopefully we can meet up again.↳ Geoff-U @9:19

There was. Some of the previous VO music was his.↳ JM in Texas @9:24
Yes, he is in the background, for now! A release that he did dedicated to his lost wisdom tooth! And he sold his wisdom tooth in a little jewelry box, silent bidding war.↳ Mr. X @9:24
I think so? I'll have to brush up on my quantum mechanics...↳ Austin Rich @9:26
I have emailed you a current playlist. Seems like you might still have one from before it was fully formed?↳ Song: "Bruises On All My Illusions" by "Soft Cell"
I have NEVER heard this Soft Cell song. And now that I think about it, I don't know many of their songs. Interesting... 9:29pm↳ Arvo Zylo @9:24
They’re out of broccoli and the orange juice I wanted, but I’m making due. Got a mile walk home so I’ll still be with ya a bit↳ Arvo Zylo @9:28
I'll take a look after the show. I can't really load that up until later.↳ Austin Rich @9:23
There has been ongoing discussion about Krautrock and how it became a big umbrella such as "The New York scene" or whatever, and what Krautrock actually signifies, but I like NEU and I want to hear more of that kind of style!↳ Austin Rich @9:26
When I was a kid, one of the neighbor kids liked to asked profound philosophical questions, such as "Do stars have boogers?"↳ Rob Marvin @9:29
right on!↳ Song: "No Tears (ADULT. Remix)" by "Tuxedomoon"
This was a regular when I would DJ goth events.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:29
I agree, the "Krautrock" label has started to include bands and music that are from Vermont, last year. It sort of confuses me. I'm similarly confused by "Goth" being used to describe songs by band that have one bridge in a minor key.↳ Austin Rich @9:28
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret is essential to me. I still like their latter work, but that one is hard to beat.↳ Song: "No Tears (ADULT. Remix)" by "Tuxedomoon"
I'm quite fond of Tuxedomoon. But I've not heard this version before. The original version is pretty lo fi, so this is nice to hear.↳ Mr. X @9:30
Oh yeah. That's one of those questions we'll be pondering for decades.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:31
Noted!↳ Mr. X @9:31
Yeah, they have a very solid output.↳ Mr. X @9:31
I like the original, but I'd have to say that I prefer this one, as a huge fan of ADULT. and also a fan of Tuxedomoon. I've seen ADULT. perform this track live more than once.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:25
Reminds me of the two grams of Donald S. Joyce’s (2/9/44 - 7/22/15) remains that came in a tiny ziploc bag that accompanied the Negativland CD, The Chopping Channel……very unique 😬↳ JM in Texas @9:34
I used to own that CD with the ashes, donated it to WZRD before I moved.↳ JM in Texas @9:34
Holy crap, is that even legal?!↳ JM in Texas @9:34
As an obsessive Don mega-fan, I regret not buying that at the time. I was SUPER-broke, and couldn't afford the CD at the time... and now they are impossible to find. Some of them also came with Cart Tapes from his personal collection, too. I should have got one.↳ Song: "What Goes Around Comes Around" by "Giggles"
I used to talk to Giggles on facebook a bit. I had this single on cassette when I was about 10 years old. Bought it at the mix shop.↳ Austin Rich @9:36
We still need to find you a cart player.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:36
I've never heard of this group / song before. I feel like I should have heard it before now...↳ Austin Rich @9:37
It's a staple of "Latin Freestyle" as a genre. So that would be a good signifier if you were ever curious.↳ Mr. X @9:37
I don't really have any carts, so I wouldn't have much use for one now. And I'd need to really invest in a lot of gear to start cutting / making my own.But I HAVE thought about it...
↳ Austin Rich @9:36
Is the Negativeland documentary back up somewhere that is viewable? I know it wasn't streaming anywhere and you couldn't buy it physically either.↳ Imaginos @9:38
Thank you! Sleep well!↳ Mr. X @9:37
A four track player right?↳ Arvo Zylo @9:38
Thank you↳ Bandit @9:38
Hmmmmm. Good question. They were taking it on tour for a while. I wonder if there are plans to put it on a disc / make it downloadable...?↳ Bandit @9:38
I guess. I don't know the technical details. I just remember when I was moonlighting as a DJ in '95 the studio had a cart machine and a bunch of carts that we had to use for playing the PSAs.↳ Mr. X @9:35
Legal, great question? But it’s my understanding that Mr. Joyce was part of deciding on how to dispose of his ashes. Now that I think about it, you can purchase tiny glass sealed vases to put ashes in and wear on a necklace around your neck.
↳ JM in Texas @9:40
Slightly off topic but I have told my parents straight up that they are being put in one of those urns that turns into a tree↳ JM in Texas @9:40
I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but it's worth noting that one could have their ashes pressed into a vinyl record if one wished...↳ Bandit @9:38
A Four Track would be more for recording / mixing. A Cart Player plays tapes that sort of look like 8-Tracks, but are just for recording stereo recordings, in a loop, of any length. A "beep" would indicate to the machine that it should stop playing, so it didn't loop infinitely. Or, you could take out the beep, and have it loop on purpose.↳ Austin Rich @9:42
There is a scene in "The Myst" that shows the female lead who is a radio DJ listening to promos on those type of tapes!↳ JM in Texas @9:40
I guess if they can shoot peoples ashes off into space, they can mail 'em to random customers if they want. I love the scene in Big Lebowski where they are trying to scatter Donny's ashes into the sea, and they just blow back and the Dude gets them all over himself.↳ Austin Rich @9:45
I know what I am watching this weekend!↳ Mr. X @9:44
The Big Lebowski is one of the rare movies that I know by heart. I do not care for comedies, but that one is special.↳ Austin Rich @9:45
News to me!↳ Austin Rich @9:45
The director of this documentary - William Davenport / The Problemist - followed Negativland on their "True / False" tour, and filmed the last days of Richard in the hospital, among other things. William made his documentary, which had interviews with me and Don and others, and then gave all the footage to Ryan Worsley, who was working on the official documentary. I don't think she used any of the interviews that William shot, but she used some of his footage in other scenes.↳ Mr. X @9:44
I’ve personally known people who had that play out in real life. Once was down at the beach and they waded out about knee deep and the three siblings were going to toss handfuls of mom into the ocean……only to have a gust of wind blow mom back on them 🤦♂️↳ Arvo Zylo @9:46
I've gotten in trouble at work for quoting The Big Lebowski at inappropriate times. ("Shut up, Donny.")↳ Song: "Sleep" by "KMFDM"
Oooohhh yes…und guten Abend, DJ Arvo↳ Mr. X @9:49
"You human paraquat!"↳ Hunterian @9:50
Danke Schoen! This is one of my favorite uses of Japanese Koto drumming!↳ Arvo Zylo @9:41
Did you know that human ashes can be mixed with ink and used in tattoos 👻↳ Arvo Zylo @9:50
As I understand it, that was one of the only ad libbed lines in the whole movie.↳ JM in Texas @9:51
Seems like an allergic reaction or a haunting waiting to happen!↳ das ubuibi @9:52
hey hey hey!↳ das ubuibi @9:52
das! We were listening to Tuxedomoon earlier. I suspect you have some good stories about them!↳ Song: "Lazy London Lady" by "Change"
Oh, damn. I don't know this group, but I'm loving this song.↳ Austin Rich @9:49
Austin, didn’t you interview William Davenport back during the KMUZ days? If not William, I’m 99% sure it was a Davenport??↳ JM in Texas @9:54
I did! And I interviewed him again, on this show, on Sheena's, when he was playing drums in a punk band with some 20 year olds.↳ Austin Rich @9:53
This whole comp is great.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:54
Hmmmmm. Thanks for the tip!↳ Austin Rich @9:49
What did you talk about? I assume Negativeland/ Over The Edge↳ JM in Texas @9:54
William interviewed me for one of his noise documentaries in Florida, nice guy.↳ Bandit @9:55
Yeah. William interviewed me for about an hour, but I think I'm only in the film for a few minutes total, and he only uses bits where I'm talking about their records.Apparently, I have a reputation for being a bit of a fan.
↳ Arvo Zylo @9:54
What were the movies called? That sounds interesting...↳ Arvo Zylo @9:55
I suspect I've seen it, as I watched most of his movies when I worked for him. I'll have to dig around on his YouTube channel.↳ postconsumer @9:57
I don't remember. It was bad, but I did play the aforementioned segment on the radio.↳ Song: "Dog Eats Dog" by "Mint"
Wait a minute... did I get some files confused? Is this the right cover, Arvo?↳ Song: "Dog Eats Dog" by "Mint"
This is also from All The Young Droogs comp↳ Arvo Zylo @9:55
Like Austin, I’ll be digging around William’s YouTube looking for that.↳ Austin Rich @10:02
booked the Problemists a couple times in S.F.↳ Austin Rich @10:02
He was also the main editor of Unsound, a zine from the '80s, and member of "Problemist", when I met him I had already heard Problemist tapes at WZRD...↳ das ubuibi @10:03
Jinkx!↳ Song: "Help Me Mama (I'm In Love With A Llama)" by "Harpo"
got problems but at least I ain't in love with a llama.↳ Song: "Kiss Me Stupid" by "Smersh"
The first American movie to be condemned by the Roman Catholic Legion of Decency since Elia Kazan's "Baby Doll":↳ JM in Texas @10:03
Here is a playlist of his Docus↳ Austin Rich @10:07
"This film features two days at the Saint Pete Noise Festival of 2013. Some of the musicians featured are Hal McGee, Arvo Zylo, Ironing, Trotsky's Watercolor, La Funcion de Repulsa, J.Thelonious."↳ David Shortell @10:05
Interesting. I'll have to read that.↳ Austin Rich @10:08
I'm a huge Ironing fan. His stuff is nearly flawless.↳ Austin Rich @10:08
Sharlyn Evertsz was the highlight of that fest for me, and I played after her.i came up to her like, damn, you gonna make me follow that? She was supposed to play earlier but locked her keys in her car...
↳ Bandit @10:06
Thank You Mr. Bandit!!!↳ Arvo Zylo @10:09
I feel like something similar has happened to me at every Noise Fest I've played. I have to follow someone good? Damn...↳ JM in Texas @10:11
Its just Bandit, Mister Bandit was my father xD 10:13pm↳ Song: "God's Zoo" by "Death Cult"
& before death cult they were Southern Death Cult. The Fall's Marc Riley & Billy Duffy knew each other as kids & would bump into each other as the climbed the rock & roll ladder, one week in NYC m, the next at a Manc suburban bus stop
↳ Bandit @10:12
Is that how you refer to Burt Reynolds?↳ Austin Rich @10:14
You're funny xD↳ Austin Rich @10:14
I've been known to get Burt Lancaster and Burt Reynolds mixed up.↳ Song: "Working Class Hero" by "Jerry Williams"
I just watched the movie, "Manhunter" not long ago, and this song really should have been in the movie.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:15
Oh, damn! I'll have to listen to that.↳ Mr. X @10:15
Wait: they're different people? Huh. That might explain some things...↳ Austin Rich @10:15
Nice! I can't disagree! I haven't seen that one in about five years, but I can't argue, from what I remember!↳ Arvo Zylo @10:16
That movie is better than I thought it would be. I really liked it, and the music was fantastic. (Save for one very obvious inclusion that feels like it might have been "what they could afford." But I digress...)↳ Bandit @10:12
Respect 🫡↳ Song: "Simple Man" by "Lobo"
I was gonna do a yacht rock set but I decided against it.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:19
Thank you.↳ Austin Rich @10:17
The Hannibal series was pretty great once you got past the first few episodes. Initially there were problems with believability but after that it was a lot of murders that seemingly integrated a knowledge of art history, and that was enough for me.↳ Song: "Simple Man" by "Deftones"
This is the first time in my radio career that I have played either Lobo or Deftones on the radio.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:20
I'm not sure I'm interested in the series, but that first movie was REALLY well done, and on a budget, too. (When you look at it, MOST of the movie is dialog and music. It's pretty good filmmaking.)↳ Austin Rich @10:21
I was gonna say... Lobo on Mid-Valley Mutations? But that's encouraging for some things that I was planning to play.↳ Mr. X @10:23
Oh no! What have I unleashed!↳ Austin Rich @10:22
There is a version of that first book also called "The Red Dragon" if I'm not mistaken, featuring Anthony Hopkins, but predating Silence of The Lambs. I still need to read the books, but I own them.↳ Mr. X @10:23
On that subject: if all goes well, in two weeks we will have an all Mr. X show, programmed and hosted by Mr. X. I'm looking forward to it; he often turns me onto stuff I didn't know.↳ Arvo Zylo @9:46
I thought it was too soon for the Coen Brothers to make another kidnapping movie just 2 years after "Fargo".↳ Arvo Zylo @10:24
That's what my partner said. (She's a big fan of all those movies and books and shows.) There's something about the look and style of Manhunter that doesn't even make it that gruesome, but there are a few scenes that are pretty intense. Manhunter rules. Two Thumbs up from Austin.↳ David Shortell @10:25
I enjoyed Fargo, but I didn't see it when it came out. I saw it on cable at some point.↳ Austin Rich @10:21
My first time hearing the Deftones cover.↳ Austin Rich @10:24
Thanks Austin! It should be a lot of fun! Hint: two tunes by David Thomas!↳ David Shortell @10:25
I think each Coen Brothers movie is pretty different, even when they use some of the same themes. They rarely disappoint for me, but I'm also pretty forgiving. Turns out I like well made movies!↳ Arvo Zylo @10:27
I really like Fargo, and it's got things in it that aren't really in their other movies. I've been sort of curious about the TV show, but I'm not sure about the time commitment.↳ Song: "Hand of Doom" by "Danzig"
Hurm.↳ Song: "Hand of Doom" by "Danzig"
I worked at a used CD store in the '90s, and so I have a knowledge of certain things that I wouldn't notice otherwise. This one was released by Disney's "Hollywood" label, and was not promoted once they realized that Danzig was not Disney material. They did the same thing to Insane Clown Posse.↳ Song: "Changes" by "Gamma Ray"
Now that is an album cover↳ JM in Texas @9:49
Then there's the time Sid Vicious's mom brought her son's ashes back to England.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:29
And to the Dead Milkmen, who had an album on Hollywood, and it was not promoted, and they were promised "The Moon" by the label. Most people don't even know that Milkmen album, as a result.↳ Austin Rich @10:29
I am not a great binge watcher either. I did watch"SOMETHING VERY BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN"
and it is an 8 episode series based around the anxieties of commuting to marriage...
↳ Arvo Zylo @10:29
We have plans afoot for a Mutations Disney parody as well.↳ Bandit @10:30
Innit?↳ David Shortell @10:30
This is probably not supposed to be funny, but reading this made me laugh."There goes Sid..."
↳ Austin Rich @10:30
I had most Dead Milkmen stuff from that same used CD store, but do not remember what label any of their stuff was on.↳ Mr. X @10:31
I will be in attendance!↳ Arvo Zylo @10:31
I find a lot of the pacing and style of modern TV not really for me. Meanwhile: I have the Moonlighting DVD set, and I just got another season of The Rockford Files to plow through. Most of the old Philip Marlowe adaptations have been good... haven't seen any modern ones.
↳ David Shortell @10:30
I had not heard this story, thx for sharing 😮↳ Song: "Changes" by "Gamma Ray"
Damn, I thought I knew all the cheesy hard rock bands from back in the day. Clearly I was wrong, as I didn't know that song at all.↳ Austin Rich @10:34
I have been watching a lot of old experimental films, partly because they are short. For example, "Berlin Horse" is a short film from 1970 that features early guitar loop sounds from Brian Eno.
↳ Arvo Zylo @10:35
Oh, interesting. I bet I would love that.↳ Austin Rich @10:35
Kind of a side project.↳ Song: "Hand of Doom" by "Danzig"
I really love the first two Danzig records, and scattered tunes from his later records. But I feel like Danzig drops off in quality pretty quickly, unfortunately.↳ Song: "Muhammed Ali & The Crickets" by "Alan Licht"
Those New York minutes are faster than your regular minute.↳ Austin Rich @10:28
Today is Bloomsday, a good excuse to rewatch "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"---based, like Joyce's "Ulysses", on Homer's "The Odyssey".↳ David Shortell @10:39
Before Arvo and I settled on this date, I almost scheduled a Bloomsday show.↳ Austin Rich @10:37
Danzig called me a freak at an autograph signing in 1999, and he was really appalled by my appearance, so I didn't pay attention to him for decades, and I never really liked the song "Mother", but eventually I came around. Out of honest practicality, the music helped during hard times, despite the often disagreeable nature of it.↳ Bandit @10:40
Thank you for listening! Have a great night!↳ David Shortell @10:39
When my dad was on sabbatical, he and my mom did the Bloomsday tour in Dublin.↳ David Shortell @10:39
I will say - and I am a nerd that REALLY loves the Odyssey - that "O Brother" was EXCELLENT. (And it riffs on a lot of other film in fun ways.) It's certainly the most fun adaptation of The Odyssey I've ever seen.↳ Austin Rich @10:39
I still need to read that Ulysses↳ Bandit @10:40
Sleep well, Bandit! We'll work on a show, soon.↳ Song: "Muhammed Ali & The Crickets" by "Alan Licht"
Damn, this song rules.↳ Austin Rich @10:41
I own the portable James Joyce, which has a fraction of Ulysses in it, but haven't read it yet. I have a serious addiction to buying more books than I can read.↳ Austin Rich @10:41
I remember the two-part 1997 NBC-TV movie "The Odyssey". Not great, but it was good to see Michael J. Pollard as the wind god Aeolus.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:42
I've never ready Ulysses, but I have been told I should.I've read a few translations of The Odyssey, but the one by Robert Fitzgerald is the most enjoyable, as a story and a poem. And I'm a sucker for Greek Adventure stories, in book or film.
↳ David Shortell @10:42
Hmmmmm... I'll have to re-visit that. I don't really remmber it at all.↳ Song: "Martin Scorsese" by "King Missile"
A bit of a change of pace.↳ Austin Rich @10:23
Don't worry, there will be no Eagles, Chicago, Santana, Beatles, Grateful Dead or Steely Dan.↳ Mr. X @10:45
Thank you.↳ Mr. X @10:45
The only Steely Dan I ever played on the radio was actually a mash up of Steely Dan and Danzig called "Steely Danzig", something between "Mother" and "Dirty Work".↳ Song: "Martin Scorsese" by "King Missile"
There is a very hilarious radio edit of this song, with a different vocal take by John S. Hall, that changes the lyrics to something radio friendly. It's funnier, in some ways.↳ Song: "My T.V. Is Watchin' Me" by "Mojo Nixon"
I miss you, Mojo.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:46
Nice.↳ Austin Rich @10:46
Always wanted to play this on the radio. I've played swearing on the radio before, but this one was a bit too abusive.↳ Austin Rich @10:46
I realized I had never played anything with Mojo except his CD with Jello.Incidentally, Little Fyodor opened for Mojo Nixon once.
I figured if I didn't play Mojo Nixon, my set could use some fixin'...
↳ Arvo Zylo @10:48
Mojo was the best. His albums hold up! I wish I'd seen him when he was around. Oh well.↳ Mr. X @10:45
I have played Chicago Transit Authority's "Freeform Guitar" on the radio. I have played The Beatles (Octopus' Garden) and Revolution 9 on the radio. I haven't played The Eagles on the radio, but I would. I have worked their concerts, everyone goes to the bathroom after Hotel California."Friend of The Devil" is the only Grateful Dead song that I unironically enjoy.
↳ Song: "Jolly Roger in Donkeytown" by "Lance Gargoyle"
RRRECORDS released a seven inch of Lance Gargoyle stuff. So far the greatest I've heard is on youtube, especially "Monster Rock"↳ Arvo Zylo @10:51
There's something about that soft rock / soft country / jam band kind of music (Eagles / Santana / Dead) that I just can't get into. I'd rather listen to the Flying Burrito Brothers, which I think do that kind of music well. (Even Tom Petty is MUCH better to my ears.)↳ Austin Rich @10:44
I've only read David Lasky's 1992 mini-comic version:
Today I discovered "Ulysses for Dummies":
www.yogaliecht.ch...
↳ Arvo Zylo @10:51
Actually, I think it's Mr. Fab who has the thing against The Eagles. I think even Austin likes their "Journey of a Sorcerer," which was used for the Hitchhiker's Guide theme.↳ David Shortell @10:53
Interesting! I'll have to check those out.↳ Austin Rich @10:53
Generally i'd agree, except that I always look for exceptions to the rule, to my tastes anyway.↳ Mr. X @10:54
Hmmmm, maybe? I've only every heard him complain about The Smith, Morrissey, and "Indie Rock." Maybe he doesn't like The Eagles, but I don't recall anything specific.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:51
Chicago's Terry Kath was an awesome guitarist. I was so depressed when he accidentally shot himself.↳ Mr. X @10:54
I do give The Eagles "Journey of The Sorcerer" a pass, only when I listen to those Hitchhiker's recordings.↳ Austin Rich @10:49
Apropos to the Eagles discussion, I like his "Don Henley Must Die".↳ Song: "Jolly Roger in Donkeytown" by "Lance Gargoyle"
I quite liked that, too!↳ David Shortell @10:56
YES! I think about that song more than I should.↳ Austin Rich @10:55
I do not care for The Smiths or Morrissey. I have tried.↳ Mr. X @10:56
I did not know about that!↳ Austin Rich @10:56
Glad you dug it!↳ Arvo Zylo @10:58
I tried, too. (More with the Smiths than with Morrissey.) There's some sounds on the guitar I don't mind, but their songs are just not that good. "How Soon Is Now?" is probably their best song, and it doesn't sound anything like the rest of their material.↳ Austin Rich @10:57
I saw him play it live. When his pianist interrupted the song by breaking into "Desperado", Mojo pretended to murder him with a prop-axe.↳ David Shortell @10:59
Ha!↳ David Shortell @10:59
Oh, shit! That's amazing.↳ Arvo Zylo @10:58
He was trying to prove to some friends that there were no bullets in the chamber, so he pointed it at himself and pulled the trigger.↳ Mr. X @11:00
:-(↳ Austin Rich @11:01
If your neighbor with the flags on his pick-up listens to FM, plenty!↳ JM in Texas @11:04
Thanks JM! Have a good night at work!↳ Mr. X @11:04
I'm probably not really in a position where I could get in legal trouble, as Trump as really scaled back the FCC in terms of resources. Regardless, I should probably not really announce my broadcasts, and I probably shouldn't do it in a way that could get WFMU in trouble. I need to think about how to use it.↳ Austin Rich @11:05
How many watts?↳ Arvo Zylo @10:58
How about The Snuffs, led by Quilloughby?↳ David Shortell @11:07
I will have to check it out! I do not recall knowing about it!↳ Mr. X @11:07
I don't know! It's a CZE-5C, and I need to research it and find out what it can do. I suspect it doesn't not have much power.↳ Song: "Any Other Way" by "Jackie Shane"
Another amazing Numero Group find.↳ Song: "Any Other Way" by "Jackie Shane"
One of the first trans performers.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:08
Morrissey was furious about that episode.↳ Austin Rich @11:09
Oh! I just googled it: 5 Watts.↳ Mr. X @11:09
Agreed! I seem to play at least one thing from NG per DJ set.↳ David Shortell @11:07
I heard it is very funny. I need to see that.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:11
Mr. X wrote the liner notes for a Eugene-centric Numero Group release.↳ Song: "Long, Long Winter" by "The Impressions"
Speaking of Chicago, one of my favorite songs by The Impressions.↳ Austin Rich @11:10
I remember KRRC was only 10 watts, and it barely covered the Reed campus. So with 5, maybe one square block?↳ Austin Rich @11:12
Excellent!↳ Song: "Gone For Good" by "Wendy Rene"
Easily my favorite soul singer.↳ Mr. X @11:12
Reading up on it, a two mile radius is realistic, five probably at the upper range on good days. If I could mount it on top of a very tall building and add a stronger antennae, I could probably another miles or so. But I have a feeling two miles might be the most I could get, realistically, without going all-in on radio gear.↳ Austin Rich @11:15
Watch out, 1/16th of Salem!↳ Mr. X @11:18
Reminds me of when Herman Munster got into ham radio, and the neighborhood kids on walkie-talkies fooled him into thinking there was an invasion from Mars going on.↳ Mr. X @11:20
I forgot about that one! We have the Munsters DVD boxed set, but I haven't finished watching it yet. I should sample that one...↳ Austin Rich @11:21
I had that box set, it's a beauty, and much better than the Addams Family box set, by comparison.↳ Austin Rich @11:21
I've been watching it lately. But only to prove to myself that the Addams Family was better.↳ Mr. X @11:22
I like to think of them as branches of the same bountiful tree.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:23
That's the diplomatic position to take, for sure.↳ Song: "I've Been Down So Long (It Looks Like Up To Me)" ...
I just priced / put out a copy of this record TODAY, at our store.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:23
It's funny, all the similarities between them, actually. Clearly they were watching the competition and not ashamed to steal ideas.↳ Mr. X @11:22
I grew up watching reruns of both, and so did my friend in Croatia! Mister Ed was cool, but I have no recollection of any enthusiasm regarding Leave It To Beaver or The Brady Bunch or anything else. I ultimately just want to live in one of these old mansions. I am watching a silent film "The Bat" recently and also "Vampyr" and I've decided that I just want to live in those movies, bats be damned.↳ Austin Rich @11:25
It was a gift from my friend Dom, who performed as SIGULDA years ago. I always wanted to find it in a thrift store, but my friend found it for me!↳ Arvo Zylo @11:26
They both had a huge impact on shattering the conventions of conformity, which I very much appreciate.↳ Mr. X @11:26
I love that Charles Addams inspired the series just by making contrarian comics. I do not know that the origin story for The Munsters was so memorable, as a I recall, but I'm not complaining.Ultimately, The Addams Family films that I did see in theaters, and did lead me to have an eternal crush on Wednesday/Christina Ricci (we are the same age) were preferable to any Munsters movie.
↳ Song: "Long Gone" by "Neil Diamond"
In 2004 / 2005, a friend - Melanie - wanted to do a regular feature, called "Neil Diamond's Hour of Power." She was gonna come in once a month and play an hour of Neil Diamond. She did it exactly once, and never again.↳ Austin Rich @11:30
I would have done something similar, except it's technically illegal to play more than 4 songs by any same artist in one hour.↳ Song: "I've Been Down So Long (It Looks Like Up To Me)" ...
Did Richard Fariña's 1966 novel inspire this song?↳ Austin Rich @11:30
Not Neil Diamond, though.↳ Austin Rich @11:34
I remember it was a rule on KMUZ which we broke when we played all those E-13 songs in a row.↳ Austin Rich @10:54
David Lasky has drawn other comics inspired by James Joyce.↳ Mr. X @11:35
Again, KMUZ used to tell us that was a rule, but I don't know if it was an ACTUAL law; I had MANY shows that featured all one artist for the whole two hours, and never got in trouble with anyone.↳ Song: "My Baby" by "Janis Joplin"
I dearly wish she wasn't cajoled into leaving Big Brother and the Holding Company.↳ David Shortell @11:39
I agree.↳ David Shortell @11:36
Woah. I need to look at that..."No, there is no federal law prohibiting terrestrial radio stations from playing more than four songs by the same artist per hour. The common misconception stems from copyright regulations that apply specifically to online webcasters and streaming services, not traditional AM/FM broadcasters. "
↳ Arvo Zylo @11:42
Yeah, that seems right.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:42
Presumably this would apply to radio stations that also stream, though, right? I mean, most of them do also stream now, don't they?↳ Arvo Zylo @11:43
As I understand the law, the FCC has no control over streaming content. They can only have an influence over terrestrial radio.↳ Austin Rich @11:44
Yes, the restriction applies to the online stream, but not the over-the-air signal. When a terrestrial radio station simulcasts its broadcast online, the digital transmission is legally distinct from the analog radio wave. To qualify for the statutory license required to stream music legally, the online portion of the broadcast must comply with the sound recording performance complement rules (no more than 4 songs by the same artist in a 3-hour period).
Dual Compliance: Stations simulcasting online often program their playlists to satisfy the stricter digital rules for both feeds to avoid the logistical complexity of maintaining two separate schedules.
Legal Risk: If a station plays an artist five times in an hour on their terrestrial frequency (which is legal) and streams that same hour online, they are violating federal copyright law for the webcast portion of the transmission. This exposes the station to potential liability from SoundExchange or copyright holders for the digital performance.
Exemptions: Some stations have historically negotiated specific settlements or licenses that may alter these requirements, but the default federal rule mandates compliance for the digital stream.
↳ pxe @11:43
Hello!.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:46
Hmmmmm. I don't know about any of that. I know that I have violated those streaming guidelines for well over 20 years now, as every station I've been at has streamed and broadcast, and I regularly play more than four songs by the same artist. I have no idea how it's enforced; there's a lot of conventional streaming radio that violates this, and I haven't heard of anyone loosing as show or getting kicked off the air. It might be a rule, but I've never heard of it being enforced.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:48
hiho zylo↳ Austin Rich @11:50
WFMU might be exempt, and I doubt it's enforced. I have read something about an artist themselves suing, but apparently not The Talking Heads, at least not what I am finding now.I just know that I have avoided doing it because of this, although I have played all kinds of swear words and whatnot without consequence.
↳ Arvo Zylo @11:29
I hear that while Charles Addams created hundreds of New Yorker cartoons, only 58 featured those characters.↳ David Shortell @11:53
I had a calendar at one point. I should look into a book!↳ Arvo Zylo @11:52
I usually fall on the "Don Joyce" side of things: there isn't a radio rule that shouldn't be broken, and often. Anymore I make up my own rules for my own show, and I follow them about half the time.↳ Austin Rich @11:54
As Mr. Fab has said before, WFMU pays for their right to do what they want on air, but that doesn't mean that other radio stations wouldn't be fined if it were to be enforced, and in the Trump era, that may be worth considering elsewhere.↳ Austin Rich @11:55
I'm here at UBstudios, getting ready for 3 minute madness!↳ Mr. X @11:55
Thanks for having me! Thanks for sticking around!↳ univac @11:58
Thank you! Have a good one!↳ Arvo Zylo @11:58
Yeah, he's using his phone. MOST people can't comment via the phone, for tech reasons that are too complicated to get into.↳ Austin Rich @11:58
I comment from my phone in the browser.↳ Arvo Zylo @11:59
