i quit a job once to take a trip across the country. it was in fact leisurely - because i blew off all financial obligations! but i did not look at it as a *vacation*. there was no specified end time, and i had a mission, scouting out a new place to settle in.

(I briefly dated an RN in 2000 -- he worked in an AIDS hospice and had a similar schedule -- working nights, some weekends, but four nights on, then three days off)
It is an odd existence, still. Really two completely different personalities high functioning. I have learned the long weekend trip, driving back roads for 12 hours to get to a remote destination, stopping whenever... I vacate. I have vacated my regular life. A LOT of work compartmentalizing my brain helps

i agree with how vacations have gotten to the point of being so classist, bordering on elitist (not sure if it has always been this way? i remember as a kid, even if a family did not have a lot of money, they could pool resources with other relatives, for example -- or someone had a friend who had a house by a beach . . . )
and nowadays, if you are unemployed, people think that you have all this "free time" (or even worse, "retired" 🤮🤬) -- not having employment with any "paid time off" is a nightmare!
(i worked very briefly as a telemarketer, basically out of desperation! probably my shittiest job ever, and i would argue that it is far more degrading than "sex work" -- but even there, every week when i got paid, i would go to a movie, usually at nearby Film Forum -- not exactly a vacation, but definitely restorative "time off")
