Hmmm, a fave is tough. Some faves: Kosher dill, Cornichons, Old fashioned Jewish sour and half sours-we used to get them in NYC right out of old wooden barrels! Bread and butter, Not many pickles I don't like. I guess too much garlic would be a less favored one.
My father used to have a pickle guy on the Lower East Side. A real treat when he would bring them home out of the barrel. Half-sours are probably my favorite. Damned hypertension means they're a very occasional treat.

Ha! So true. I've got a bunch of noisy tree crews outside today, clearing the power lines. Anything could happen! Hoping they don't take out my power or internet.
We have 18 months of facade restoration going on, then once that was finally over they decided to renovate all the fire escapes in the courtyard for the next four months.
I hope so too, Gina! It's crazy when you're used to a "sound-proof" studio to be in a "any sound comes right in" place, but I heart doing a show from home. Hell, I heart doing a show from anywhere!

Hey Bob. Checking in from Southern Iowa. I recently got through a Beau Brummels cd box set from Cherry Red. A great purchase and documentation with frustratingly small print.
Rollins replaced Harold Land i the Brown-Roach Quintet.
Interesting hearing Richie Powel (Bud's brother), has a softer style, not as technically brilliant but sweet sounding.

Bob Brainen:
Hey Eugene, the one on Now Sounds? Awesome box. They're working on the reunion album which was an instant cut-out bin item but which I love. With lots
of bonus material.
If New Sounds is a subsidiary of Cherry Red. It's 8 cds. I have the reunion album. It a great sounding album. Alec Palao was disappointed that the reunion album wasn't available for licensing at the time of that release.

Just caught that "Dig!" is based on the chords to Sweet Georgia Brown. A contrafact.
A common strategy back then (mostly since bop, but even swing players did it), write a new melody over changes to a standard tune). There's the story that Lubinski, who ran Savoy Records, made Bird play Koko without the melody of Cherokee to avoid paying royalties.
I never heard these being referred to as "contrafacts", odd name for them. Learn something every day...

My uncles used to go around with a red wagon and buy records from folks in Newark when they were young. They belonged to a Hot Club there, where they shared jazz records and shows. My uncle Paul (who did the LP covers) wrote a great essay about it in a book called "Black Beauty, White Heat" that I'll get transcribed someday.
He was a huge influence on me, in many ways! A wonderful guy. He played the comb in a classic jazz band in NYC for years, and once with Eubie Blake at Carnegie Hall! He's got a couple of CDs, too.
