Seeing Tom Waits live, many years ago, with The Ramen City Kid and many of our friends, was great! I should track down that live recording of that show.
My wife and I both bonded over loving "Electric Warrior," and we used to listen to it more when we first met. We should listen to it together more often.
I keep meaning to check it out. I doubt he will tour again, but maybe we'll get a handful of new songs, now and then?

I decided to try out Spotify's "Workout Mix" when I was at the gym, fully expecting some tired trance mix - and it put a Tom Waits track (Hell Broke Luce) in the mix! (plus a bunch of other cool stuff, some of which was new to me). It based the mix off of my existing playlists and I gotta say, it did a remarkably good job.
Early in my radio career, I borrowed this record from the Ramen City Kid, and played it on a show... maybe one of the first four. I have loved this band every since.

It's pretty decent, I like the Athens GA. book better (Party Out Of Bounds). This Chapel Hill book is a bit dry - kinda of a long stream of "so-and so moved to town, they started band X and then started their own label Y and put out their records". The Athens GA book paints a more colorful picture. Both interesting reads either way.

Mr Fab:
Well Austin, this show has sure as hell made me happy. So keep that in mind: you’re putting good stuff out into the world that we need.
This makes me think of the scene in Huckleberry Finn where Huck and Jim planned to make a turn at Cairo and go up the Ohio River so that Jim can make it to a northern state. But instead, it gets too foggy and they slip past Cairo without knowing it, setting the stage for them to go deeper and deeper into the south, and more trouble.
Now you got my gears turning on how I can pull off a trick via audio... I might have to workshop it; though I feel my illusionary skills are not there yet
I can't remember what movie this song was in - probably Ghost World? - but ever since I first heard it, it has been too easy to get stuck in my head. It's so damn good.
The Mills Brothers are just one of the best things out there. Pulling up videos of them performing on YouTube is ALWAYS worth your time.

I had to slip in a few country blues songs, too. Was gonna put in Bob Wills too, but I ran out of time.
I have at least several down with the basement tapes! His manager Jeff had the nicest cursive handwriting and would send a nice little letter with the tapes. I have those letters somewhere still, too
I never got a letter. There was a record store in PDX that doesn't exist anymore, that would stock all his tapes. I picked them up, every time I would visit PDX.

MHLee Was saying today that one of tiny Tim’s suits is for sale, for only like $140 or something. He said it should go in the rock hall. I said we need a real Sheena’s Jungle Room so we can start our own Hall of Fame. And actual Daniel Johnston tapes would be another great thing to put on display.
Ah! I don't know if anywhere around here sold the tapes. My ex was/is a home taper and he told me about sending away to TX for the tapes. (He and I were just penpals then. I was, like, 15 or something buying stamps and tapes with my babysitting money.)
Ha! I think most covers of this song are better than his. I've never been much of a Dylan fan. I bet there's probably a "Greatest Hits" version of his catalog that I would like, but I haven't put in the work yet.

Thanks Geoff-U! I'm playing another Corvallis show next month... same venue. I'll send you details when there's a flyer!Austin Rich:
↳ Mr Fab @11:14
Right?Mr. X:
↳ Song: "Cairo Blues" by "Henry Spaulding"
This makes me think of the scene in Huckleberry Finn where Huck and Jim planned to make a turn at Cairo and go up the Ohio River so that Jim can make it to a northern state. But instead, it gets too foggy and they slip past Cairo without knowing it, setting the stage for them to go deeper and deeper into the south, and more trouble.Bandit:
↳ Austin Rich @11:12
Now you got my gears turning on how I can pull off a trick via audio... I might have to workshop it; though I feel my illusionary skills are not there yetAustin Rich:
↳ Mr. X @11:16
That's right! I haven't read that book since I was a kid. I should re-read it; I have a nice copy my grandmother gave me.Austin Rich:
↳ Song: "Traveling Riverside Blues" by "Robert Johnson"
This reminds me of the movie, "Night of The Hunter," only because of the "riverside" references.Mr. X:
↳ Bandit @11:16
Radio is already magic! But still, I'd be curious to hear what you come up with.Austin Rich:
↳ Song: "Black Dog Blues" by "Bayless Rose"
I can't remember what movie this song was in - probably Ghost World? - but ever since I first heard it, it has been too easy to get stuck in my head. It's so damn good.Heather Z:
↳ Mr. X @11:22
I'll tune in, for sure, Bandit, when you hit the airwaves!!Mr Fab:
↳ Austin Rich @11:24
So haunting.Austin Rich: Bandit is becoming a regular on my show; they've called in so much, we could almost release an album of "Bandit Calls."
Austin Rich:
↳ Song: "Big Boy Blue" by "The Mills Brothers"
And for a change of pace...Austin Rich:
↳ Song: "Big Boy Blue" by "The Mills Brothers"
The Mills Brothers are just one of the best things out there. Pulling up videos of them performing on YouTube is ALWAYS worth your time.Mr. X: A friend of mine once had a Delta Blues radio show on KUHB, St. Paul Island, Alaska. He burned me a couple of CDs of these old bluesmen and women. Those have been my primary exposure to this type of music. I gotta admit, it grows on you.
Austin Rich: I had to slip in a few country blues songs, too. Was gonna put in Bob Wills too, but I ran out of time.
Heather Z:
↳ Austin Rich @11:25
I would buy this!Austin Rich:
↳ Mr. X @11:29
I will do at least one more follow-up, as I need a show with "less work" to help me stay ahead of the workload, for at least another week.Mr Fab:
↳ Song: "First Time I Met The Blues" by "Buddy Guy"
Speaking of “Sinners”!Austin Rich:
↳ Mr Fab @11:32
He was playing in Seattle when I was there, and I completely failed to go and see him. Now I'm regretting it.Heather Z: Awww nice. Daniel Johnston! I used to send away for his tapes by mail back in the way back when. Good times and good stuff..
Mr Fab:
↳ Austin Rich @11:33
I saw Buddy maybe 20 years ago or so? On a bill with BB King so that should tell how long ago that was. He’s very fun live.Austin Rich:
↳ Heather Z @11:35
I still have about 10 of those tapes. They are great.Austin Rich:
↳ Mr Fab @11:35
I was in Seattle for work, and I kept going past this venue he was playing at. I kept wanting to sneak away and get a ticket.Heather Z:
↳ Austin Rich @11:35
I have at least several down with the basement tapes! His manager Jeff had the nicest cursive handwriting and would send a nice little letter with the tapes. I have those letters somewhere still, tooAustin Rich:
↳ Heather Z @11:37
I miss my Chord Organ. I gave it away, thinking I would never use it again. Sigh.Bandit:
↳ Mr. X @11:22
I agree radio is magic! Though to pull off an illusion of this type would require some planning.Austin Rich:
↳ Heather Z @11:37
I never got a letter. There was a record store in PDX that doesn't exist anymore, that would stock all his tapes. I picked them up, every time I would visit PDX.Bandit:
↳ Austin Rich @11:25
"Bandit Calls" : talks from a silly little dude who enjoys the radioMr Fab: MHLee Was saying today that one of tiny Tim’s suits is for sale, for only like $140 or something. He said it should go in the rock hall. I said we need a real Sheena’s Jungle Room so we can start our own Hall of Fame. And actual Daniel Johnston tapes would be another great thing to put on display.
Mr. X:
↳ Song: "Pale Blue Eyes" by "The Velvet Underground"
Awwww, yes. One of the greatest songs of all time.Heather Z:
↳ Austin Rich @11:38
Ah. I miss my amp-organ... Ieft it when I moved. It was cheap from a thrift store but cool as all get go.Austin Rich:
↳ Mr. X @11:39
Yeah. I think about the Velvet Underground a lot. Their songs have aged ASTONISHINGLY well, and I feel like I get new things from them all the time.Austin Rich:
↳ Mr Fab @11:39
YES! A Sheena's Jungle Room Rock 'n' Roll Ephemera museum! I'm into that.Mr. X:
↳ Austin Rich @11:40
Patti covers this on that live from Eugene bootleg I gave you.Austin Rich:
↳ Mr. X @11:41
I need to sneak that into an afterparty sometime soon. That would be nice to listen to as a group.Heather Z:
↳ Austin Rich @11:39
Ah! I don't know if anywhere around here sold the tapes. My ex was/is a home taper and he told me about sending away to TX for the tapes. (He and I were just penpals then. I was, like, 15 or something buying stamps and tapes with my babysitting money.)Mr. X:
↳ Austin Rich @11:42
Awesome, yes!Bandit:
↳ Mr Fab @11:39
I know the Mothership has a few of his OG tapes in their collectionMr Fab:
↳ Austin Rich @11:41
WHERE is Screamin Jay’s coffin?!Mr. X:
↳ Mr Fab @11:45
Maybe Jim Jarmusch can track it down.Bandit:
↳ Mr Fab @11:45
The same place they put Jimmy Hoffa's coffinBandit: Great show Austin!! Love some blues and this gave me a fill of it! Thank you!
Heather Z: Thanks for a great show, Austin, and a lovely chat, everyone! MVM does my heart good.
Mr. X: Thanks for the music, Austin! Peace out, all y'all!
Austin Rich:
↳ Song: "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" by "13th Floor Elev...
One of my favorite songs, from one of my ALL TIME favorite albums.Austin Rich: Thanks for tuning in, everyone! My Tuesday night hangs are some of the few social times I get.
Mr. X:
↳ Austin Rich @11:54
Since Dylan can't sing, it's always nice when other artists figure out what the melody is supposed to sound like.Austin Rich:
↳ Mr. X @11:55
Ha! I think most covers of this song are better than his. I've never been much of a Dylan fan. I bet there's probably a "Greatest Hits" version of his catalog that I would like, but I haven't put in the work yet.Austin Rich:
↳ Song: "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" by "13th Floor Elev...
I haven't seen it yet, but doesn't Breaking Bad end with this song, over the final credits of the final episode? Maybe not this version, but a version...Austin Rich: See ya'll next time! Take care. Hopefully you have a cure for the blues...
pxe: thnx austin!
Mr. X:
↳ Song: "Mid-Valley Mutations Closing Theme" by "Shadows I...
Oh, I see what you did there, "Shadows in Blue."das ubuibi: thanks Austin !!
Mr Fab: No blues after this awesome radio!
