Hello, all! Today's playlist pic is one of the illustrations that come with a cassette we'll be hearing from today: D.D.A.A.'s "Noise Building Nation."
11:52am
Andrew in Toronto:
Hi there, Tony, and all others who are musically adventurous!
back in the day when i made a cassette of any album i expected to play a lot, or from a borrowed record, i often filled the rest of the tape with whatever wfmu was airing at the time

1:21pm
Tony Coulter:
Whoever the woman on this tape is, she's not credited ... so it could indeed be Lydia Tomkiw of Algebra Suicide. It does sound like her, for sure.
♥
1:22pm
Tony Coulter:
And like Cieciel, she was from Illinois.

1:45pm
Tony Coulter:
I have a lot of industrial/harsh noise/power electronics–type tapes -- but don't often play them here. Perhaps I *should* play more of 'em.
Know what you mean -- I guard my hearing religiously, and avoid live noise shows. (I'm not a fan of wearing earplugs.)

Yvang:
Agreed! Yes, having to wear earplugs when listening to music is so absurd.

Tony Coulter:
A programming announcement: I will be doing a fill-in on the "mothership" this Sunday, from 6 to 8 PM, for the show "Why Do We Only Listen to Dead People?" A word of warning, though: I may play some music by dead people.
I have a hearing loss because of noisy concerts and various auditory insults. The problem now is conversations in noisy public places. Even my h’aids don’t always help. Folks no haters or mezzrow live shows.
As I recall, in the '80s nobody wore earplugs. I'm surely paying for it now. And yes, that includes one memorable merzbow gig (circa 1987) in a small venue in DC with bare cinderblock walls...
🥁♥
2:03pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:
Also not the biggest fan of harsh-noise in a live context but that Stenka Bazin thing was bloody wonderful.
That was indeed noisy, now I can hear myself think (thankfully, I'm listening at work-MsJazz would run for cover if I was listening to this at home...)
Yes, I remember seeing Pussy Galore circa late 87 and it was absolutely punishing on the ears. Loudest gig I think I ever saw (including Swans, MBV etc).
Yes! A friend started to wear ear plugs and when it happened, even though he is ten years younger than me, I felt he was being the old coot. Stupid forever post adolescent ne!
The former Lisa Suckdog and former wife of Costes lives in my area. I was surprised to learn how sweet she actually is! I was freaked out by all that disinhibition in the 80s.

Yvang:
So here's the link to the discogs page about the cassette which is probably not the cassette we are listening to (but with Didgeridoo in it as well, according to the credits) www.discogs.com...

Tony Coulter:
Thanks! I just don't know if what I have is an early version of the cassette on Discogs, or a completely different tape.

Hi Tony!Yvang:
↳ Tony Coulter @1:45
I enjoy noise music on the radio, not so much live...it's always too heavy as if they try to destroy the audience audition...which they often do.Olleh: Oh c’mon! Any possessed three year old with 6 arms could do this

↳ Olleh @2:21
Have you volunteered to play the part of Costes?Olleh:
↳ Tony Coulter @2:24

She had recently placed a request for some to be GG Allin!Tony Coulter:

Olleh:

Hah! I get enough push back from the missus for leaving my crap all over the house, but that’s just a euphemism for my books, music, and coffee mugs.Tony Coulter: They could have changed the track titles when (if) they reissued the tape a year later. Both tapes have four tracks.
Andrew in Toronto:
↳ Tony Coulter @2:44
What an excellent show!Tony, thanks!
Tony Coulter:
↳ Andrew in Toronto @2:49
Thanks, Andrew!Yvang:
