Blank cassette tapes used to cost a small fortune in the UK back in the 80s (if you just earned regular wages)...so they definitely got reused a lot...as I recall.
The maxell case logics matched TDK price - they got into the act as well, mid 80s till they stopped seeling the gimmic. I must have bought 50 of them.

I saw an interesting 1958 b&w film from India the other day...The Music Room...which really had an incredible amount of traditional sitar/tabla performers & even very traditional dance scenes that fortunately were beautifully captured from the pre-60s- psych explosion era.
