killa. time to fly, catch y’all soon.↳ BenZWPB @7:10
I think I would probably appreciate Botti more now. I am less sure that I know in advance what will be good. Or maybe I should say: I am more inclined to find the qualities that I like and not be afraid of liking them.↳ little danny @7:11

The tenor sound seems different from Sonny’s usual. Maybe a different horn?↳ Listener Gregory @7:31
1954 is pretty early. about to hear another 1954 Rudy Van Gelder track, let's compare↳ DJ Peter @7:36
No, I think there was a reed problem or some other issue on Confab, primarily in the low register.↳ Listener Gregory @7:14

I just looked up the North St Cabaret. They have some excellent shows coming up and a bunch of more local (I assume) acts. Kudos to them!↳ Listener Gregory @7:52

hmm that’s a better theory than what i can come up with..↳ Song: "Father Spirit" by "Vijay Iyer"
Henry Threadgiil, Vijay Iyer, and Dafnis Prieto have a record coming out on Nonesuch in August. Not on my Bingo card.↳ Listener Gregory @8:13
It's the popsicle stick holding up his humanoid mask. What's behind it, you wouldn't be able to gaze upon without turning to ivory without first mastering the standards in his Dropbox.↳ Listener Gregory @8:13
here’s my theory… i think its the moment the band is ready to play and he’s about to tell us the audience to shush↳ Song: "Nisa" by "Abdullah Ibrahim"

i guess the pretext would be record collecting and his nemesis would be vinyl-finger↳ Listener Gregory @8:31
I started off from the first laggy left-handed chord being sure that Eclipse at Dawn was Mal Waldron. Soon's it got past the theme, I was sure it was Herbie Nichols.↳ tom tom the pipers son @8:33

nice touch so to speak↳ doctorjazz @8:38
doc! Your schmaltz-sotted spirit was invoked re: a 1995 Abdullah Ibrahim date at Sweet Basil's, above. Were you there?↳ adamdoesit @8:35
I guessed Nichols too. It’s Peter’s “Fool the listeners” show.↳ Listener Gregory @7:14
I don't think Abdullah Ibrahim actually was much in the Cecil Taylor vein-if I recall, he did fall in with the Downtown Avant Garde when he came to New York, released one album I have (African Space Project), which took some of his South Africa inspired melodies, and had a wild big band blow over them. But I don't think he ever fit that mold-before and after that, he might sprinkle a little dissonance in his right hand during solo paino sections, but his roots were Ellington, Monk, and South African music.↳ adamdoesit @8:41
I saw him a bunch of times at Sweet Basils (as I've posted here before, brought MsJazz yto see his Ekaya group there on my first date), but I don't think I was at that gig.↳ doctorjazz @8:43
Saw his Quartet with Carlos Ward there a few times, and Ekaya there, also a few times, I've seen him in trio other places, but don't remember seeing his trio at Sweet Basil's...↳ doctorjazz @8:44
Thank you for the reassurance that we all miss some deep dates some of the time.↳ Song: "All of Us" by "Elvin Jones"

nice callback to bag's groove at the end :)↳ doctorjazz @8:41
I agree with everything you say... but I have some early live recordings where he is whacking at the piano for long periods in a rhythmic way, with little melody or harmony. It is super percussive and not as accessible as most of his later work. I will send you a reference.↳ Little Danny @8:48
Danny catching all the quotes tonight!↳ Listener Gregory @8:49
Sure, that would be great. One thing that was regular at his concerts was that at one point the band would drop out, he'd get a weird rhythm ostinato going in the left hand, and the right hand would go off completely independently-it could be sweet African tunes, or he could to off wildly with that right hand.↳ Listener Gregory @8:50
@doctorj, the above was to you.↳ Listener Gregory @8:51
Recorded in 1965, so very early.↳ Song: "Old Fashioned Love" by "Doc Cheatham & Sammy Price"
Saw Doc Cheatham a few times, he did a regular brunch gig (Saturday, i think), also Sweet Basils. He had disappeared for many years, then had a career rebith around thi stime.↳ Little Danny @8:51
ouch that hits close to home↳ doctorjazz @8:46

i guess that’s wher people connect to mon k… i’ve heard some but not that much↳ adamdoesit @8:53
A Scheinem Danke!↳ tom tom the pipers son @8:54
He played some Monk early on, I believe, and it was very much in the vein of the Master. Also, he apparently acknowledged Monk as an influence. Maybe @doctorj noted that last week.↳ tom tom the pipers son @8:50
Beg to disagree, I hear a lot of Monk in AI, his timing is so out of Monk...↳ doctorjazz @8:55
i see it seems like the influence is undeniable but i don’t hear monks oddness↳ Listener Gregory @8:56
didn't you go OUT for dinner?↳ DJ Peter @8:58
OK, I didn’t drop THAT much.此内容由惯性聚合(RSS阅读器)自动聚合整理,仅供阅读参考。 原文来自 — 版权归原作者所有。
