from 93-99 I taped wfmu off the air and sent the tapes to my friend Abby who had moved to Boulder. Hundreds of tapes. Most of the early rough mix were in that. They were so good they were hard to send, so I heard the a few times first. I looked for certain things in the archive and nothing I remembered was there, so I wrote to Doug and sid there are more and I can prove it. Abby had kept all the tapes! she sent them back to me. Doug forwarded my email to Steinski. Next day I had an email from Steinski. There were a ton of shows not in the archive, but they are all on DAT, and he cant transfer them. I researched transfering DAT and looked at some sources of DAT players. Steinski said he had DAT player and he would throw that in if I would come pick it all up. So I drove to chez stein and picked it all up, but the DAT player didnt work, though it powerd up. I searched for someone who could fix it and found a guy in south georgia who was retiring from his audio installation business, but had been one of those people who made quality bootleg recordings at grateful dead concerts in the 80s and 90s. I had confidence in him so I shipped him the DAT player. 2 months later he sent it back working like new and I set to transferring the 97 DAT cassettes to .flac files. 30 of the 97 tapes were already in the archive, but that left 67 shows! Some pitch and timing adjustments were needed as they weren't original to DAT and had been transferred TO the DAT 25-30 years ago from regular cassette, but likely from a different machine than they were recorded on. But now they are ready to go.
