Observations: Are there any listeners out there who got to see John Coltrane live? Or Alice Coltrane? Avatar 7:14pm
Zrp: Hi David, Hi Andrew. Ack, No softcover trade. Some of us have bad hands - Arthritis has twisted 1/2 my fingers. Avatar 7:15pm

Hi Zrp!
I have severe arthritis in all fingers.
No fun. Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm

Yikes, Andrew, no fun indeed. Avatar 7:24pm
Observations: Hard to believe now, but when she first hit the scene many male musicians were not fans, to put it nicely. Here's what Charles Tolliver told me back in 2020:

"Well, [John Coltrane] met [Alice Coltrane] and they fell in love. And of course, she was a pianist and that was good for him. She was a jazz musician. She was the sister of a wonderful bass player named Ernie Farrow who I was to meet in New York.

So it made sense that he would include her, the same way Max Roach did with Abbey Lincoln into his musical environment. She survived him and continued to be on the musical scene so that younger generations had a chance to actually see and hear her, where they didn't with John Coltrane. All they were living off was John’s records. So it makes sense that the younger generation bonded with her.

But everything that she was doing after they met and got married and were together, I would have to say was emanating off what he was doing."

No, did not see Alice Coltrane. John was dead by the time I learned of him in 1969. Avatar 7:29pm

↳ Observations @7:13

Born in 1960, we moved to the edge of LA without a Bus System down the 5 to the SFV. I would find the Hollywood scene, soon enough, but alas to late, it would have fit well at Raji's - 6160 Hollywood Blvd. :) Avatar 7:35pm
Observations: thanks for sharing both of you Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
WR: I like to hear the issues of Cosmic Music and Infinity without the edits, and overdubbing that Alice did but her work as a leader after John died was superb. Avatar 7:47pm
Observations:

↳ Song: "Isis And Osiris" by "Alice Coltrane"

Track B2 was recorded July 4, 1970, in performance at The Village Gate, New York City

Alice Coltrane – harp
Pharoah Sanders – soprano saxophone, percussion
Rashied Ali – drums
Charlie Haden – double bass
Vishnu Wood – oud

Vishnu Wood grew up in Detroit, like Alice.

doctorjazz: Hi all! (looked back, I came to jazz to late to see Alice or John Coltrane. I probably didn't get to my first concert until the early 70s, and got into jazz around 1975. Alice was around after that, but didn't get to catch her). Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
tom tom the pipers son: forgot about this…. glad to catch last hour... Avatar 9:03pm
Observations: hiya Dr J and TT! Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
tom tom the pipers son: i get the feeling with alice coltrane’s playing that there is a resistance to structure in away.. a kind of running away and fugitivity into something undefined Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
tom tom the pipers son: maybe a resistance of definition... Avatar 9:12pm
Observations:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @9:09

yes, she created her own definitions, her own sound world Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
doctorjazz: Just came back from a fun set, Steve Turre had a quartet playing in a club in New Jersey (Shanghai Jazz-not that often I get to hear good jazz without schlepping to Manhattan or Philly0. Avatar 9:18pm
Observations:

↳ doctorjazz @9:16

sounds like a good night! Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ Song: "Santana Jam slower" by "Santana & Alice Coltrane"

this is so completely awesome Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ Observations @9:12

i think that misses her point which was more radical… by saying she created her own sound world sounds like she made nice with the larger culture which is not what i think she wanted... Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
tom tom the pipers son: when artist’s create/ live in their own worlds the lose any relevance Avatar 9:44pm
Observations: interesting, I will give that some thought, thanks Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ Observations @9:44

of course i’m not denying she had a recognizable sound/ style, but style is really just residue of process like smoke Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
doctorjazz: Digging the Alice Coltrane sounds, different than what I've heard of her before. Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ Song: "Prandhana (extended)" by "Alice Coltrane"

quite trance inducing Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
doctorjazz: Thanks, David! Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
tom tom the pipers son: thanks for this david… elevating us all... Avatar 10:02pm
Observations: thanks!
