'The exercise of imagination is dangerous to those who profit from the way things are because it has the power to show that the way things are is not permanent, not universal, not necessary.' Ursula K Le Guin, A War Without End, 2003: This Is The Modern World with Trouble

NIMBY sure, when there is a data center proposal in their town. But a negative stigma has settled in about data centers that crosses political lines. People think they are gross.Charles in Chicago:
↳ Noir Lover @10:40
I think I came across wrong. I think data centers are toxic and should be stopped, or at least better regulated. But people have to give up their love of the services that data centers provide. It's not just AI, it's all the social media, e-commerce, etc. AI of course is taking it to a higher level, but the data centers were there before AI existed.Crownless Gander:

NIMBYism can be very useful when it comes to organizing across political lines against destructive big business. Then you just need to convince the successful organizers to progress towards "not in ANYONE'S back yard."PC77:

yeah... when I was a teenager i identified as a punk and what you listened to partly defined you. as an adult music is just something i enjoy, not part of my identity. it's better this way.Tim in Seattle: I saw that when it came out but 32 disc's is too much. I am sure there is some interesting stuff on it. Just like all those mammoth reissued of King Crimson stuff.
Bones: The way listening habits change as one ages is pretty fascinating to me. Also as a radio DJ, my listening has skewed intensely toward evaluation over enjoyment (i.e. how could I fit this in on a show or in a live set) which I have to actively work against when I'm listening for pleasure
Kat in the chat: And I love Exposure but I can't carry around 32 discs of it at this point. ai yi yi.
regina j:
↳ Charles in Chicago @11:38
So much better. But I distinctly remember how much what you listened to defined you, especially in high school and college. It was almost tribal. That said, I'm still friends with the punks I met in HS and college, so I suppose that says something.still b/p: So an FMU listener should organize listening getaways: 3-5 days at a lakeside cabin for immersion in /exposure to nature, peace and the "Exposure" collection.
