I remember DJ Larry Grogan arguing that Ritchie Havens occupied a niche that hasn't really existed for a long time in the pop music scene - an "interpreter" who lived on playing fairly recent hits in his own style. ze boocherie: When I was studying music in college I did a composition project utilizing the lyrics of popular songs I had never heard but was able to look up on “the internet.” One of them was “Goodbye Earl” and the others were by Britney Spears, Tupac, and Kid Rock. Based on my listening habits I was pretty sure I would never hear any of the original songs and that held true for over two decades…until this morning on Surface Noise. 11:35am
