So I grew up in the small, not so great town called Monroe, Michigan. Years ago Stephen Colbert did a promotional gag where he ended up doing a cable access show at Monroe public access tv. Yesterday, the first thing he did after ending his CBS show was to return to Monroe to host a new show with his musicial guest Jack White. Guests include Eminem and Jeff Daniels. A real Michigan fest. This is probably more hilarious if you've ever visited Monroe (don't) but very funny regardless.
Wow, just...wow. Reminds me of my first concert I went to where the opening act was Small Faces which at that time I believe had Steve Marriott & Ronnie Lane but cuz they were the opening act the audience was like, meh. Pretty rude.

My take is that he (and anyone else for that matter) can perform as long as they frigging want. Whether or not we as individuals choose to purchase or otherwise engage in what they're doing is up to them and them alone. No one should be telling the artist to stop or telling anyone who might be getting enjoyment from what the artist is doing to stop supporting them. That's it. It's fairly goddamn simple reallyh.

McCartney and his core live band have been playing with the same drummer - Abe Laboriel Jr., for decades now. I haven't seen why, but Abe was not drumming with Paul on SNL. Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers filled in. He is a great drummer, but his feel is different from Abe's. That alone could have affected the overall band performance.

Let me play devil's advocate here. Is the aging artist on a high-profile TV show taking away an opportunity from a younger and, possibly, more vibrant, and, dare I say, more relevant performer who deserves a higher profile?

I thought Macca was fine on both shows, fine for an 80-something.
He gives people what they want for the most part.
What people seem to want is not so much "Oh let's hear an amazing performance" as it is "Let's revel in the fact that we have a Beatle still playing for us!"
It's as much as he's there at all and still doing it at a decent level.
Or that's what what I saw.
He's still better value than Dylan last few times I saw Bobby, who is carrying those years more heavily.
Thoughts on Sir Paul closing out Colbert? And the group performance with Costello?
11:41am
gf2002:
Apparently Abe Laboriel Jr. had a family emergency and could not fly to NY to do the SNL gig with Paul. Abe has been Paul's drummer, one of the main harmony vocalists, and backbone of the Macca band for 25 years. When you remove that element from a band, it won't be the same band.
I enjoyed the shows, but he's sitting at a piano both times I saw him. Maybe I put too much stock in that. He had a guitar stand, which I got excited for, but he used it only for balancing when he stood up.
I think his voice is holding up - or it has a shorter distance to fall than others - but the setlists, like you said, are not intended to be crowd-pleasers.
I loved the shows, I just felt the weight of the years heavier on him. Very glad to be able to see him still.
According to the internet, so it must be true, Paul has issues with how Uncle Bob's performances can be hard to follow and disappointing to an audience. Definitely two different approaches to being old gods yet both men clearly want to share the presence of their legends with anyone who wants that to this day.

I think Paul wanted a heavier hitter to put some energy into his live shows, simple as that. I don't know if a finesse drummer was what he was looking for at the time he brought Abe Jr. on board.

I agree. I think the general assumption is his arthritis is too bad to play guitar much. It would be great to see that again but it seems like he's singing really well these last years. And he's still throwing weird curveballs. God bless him. He's just the coolest.

Like taking the SAT or running a marathon, the secret to seeing Uncle Bob these days is preparation. Checking recent set lists, being familiar with the recent albums, even listening to last week's shows immediately available on YT. Too many folks ain't prepared and so leave disappointed, but there's a lot still there if you know what to look for.

come on.. there's a bit of joe franklin in there.
I don't buy for a second that these older acts are taking time away from a younger act. I would argue that if there were any worthy younger acts they themselves would be denying an old-timer like McCartney from making such appearances.
Only two quibbles with Paul closing out Colbert: He had just been on SNL and the interview required discussion of the new album, which is still to be released?
I dunno. Places like the Garden or Giants Stadium are going to be inherently conservative in whom they book because their only concern is filling every seat. They are not going to take a chance on a younger act, esp. when they know nostalgia acts will sell out. It's a structural limitation that has come with the financialization of EVERYTHING, and large venues are completely co-opted by it.

I saw a great hockey game between the club teams of the University of Tennessee and the University of Kentucky. The SEC schools have chosen to spend on their football and basketball programs, and it showed.
Both teams' goaltending was horrible, but Kentucky's goalie could not skate , or move on the ice. He was just a very big guy with pads on, he had to be helped into position.
The final score was something like Tennessee 21, Kentucky 14, a score that would have been right at home in Neyland Stadium.

I don't think it's the fault of these artists, but if you were a TV exec, would you not be wanting to attract younger eyes to your product? I teach high school students, and yesterday they were singing Kacey Musgraves songs, and not one of them mentioned Colbert or McCartney.
I have to imagine that if they thought booking current/younger acts on the show would accomplish what you described that it would be done. But really, I think the concept of late night talk show is a ship that has long sailed.

Yes! And Los Straitjackets, Ween, so many bands who would not get that kind of exposure had it not been for Conan. Conan's NBC show in the 90's spoke to me and a lot of people my age, I don't know any similar show in the past 20 years or so that can claim that. I remember coming home from bar-hopping one night, turning on Conan, and there was Los Straitjackets playing Pacifica. It was so good I almost cried, no joke.
I never liked the visual interface of Audacity, it just looks like a lot of black lines, all with the same weight. It doesn't help you figure out what you're supposed to do. Reaper is maybe overkill for a radio show, it is _very_ capable, but has an endless free trial period--probably why I use it for stuff.
Conan also had veteran acts you'd never see on other shows. I remember seeing Carl Perkins, & I'm sure he had others. He plays guitar, of course, & it's clear he really knows more about rock/pop than his colleagues (well, his colleagues back then).
i was going to mention Reaper, but i don't know how it is for podcasts - probably easy. and FREE. i love reaper so much that i paid for a license which is cheap!

Pep Guardiola has officially announced that he is leaving Manchester City after Sunday's final game of the season, bringing to an end his trophy-filled 10 years at the club!
I think booking musical acts at this point is simply functional for the show now. It serves to give the performers a couple of breaks during the show's 90 minute run time. If the slot was ever shortened to 60 minutes, the music portions would be out the window.
I cut the cord a while back so I don't get a lot of sports anymore. What platform are you on, Sean? I see Celtic just beat Dunfermline Athletic for the Scottish Cup this a.m.
Years ago -- 2011ish? 2014? -- my friend Iain and I got up extra early to go to a bar in Manhattan that had all the soccer so we could support Hibs against Hearts in the Scottish cup. We got there at 9 AM. I brought a loaf of banana bread from my aunt. bartender put the game on one screen way down at the end of the bar as everyone else was there for some EPL big games that I didn't know anything about. One other guy had driven up from South Jersey to catch the game. It was just the three of us.
Almost immediately Hibs' best player got a red card and it was 4-0 at the half.

The clicky-star count is cumulative, correct? So if "Seeing Other People" has been played by lots of DJs in the past, that might explain why it's so far in the lead?
The issue there is "any song identification app". AI code assistants can do some surprising things but cant usually work with other applications, outside of ones like git that work completely on the command line. That's probably a hurdle that's very easy for the developers of the music apps themselves to jump over.

I just asked my AI code helper "Build me an app that can identify which beach boys are singing in any beach boys recording."
It's doing something...will keep you posted.
"For the backend, I'm using FastAPI with resemblyzer to generate voice embeddings and librosa for audio loading, plus numpy and scipy for similarity calculations. On the frontend, I'll use React with Vite and TailwindCSS, adding Wavesurfer.js for waveform visualization and a custom timeline component. The core algorithm will load the audio, compute continuous embeddings with resemblyzer to identify voice segments, then match them against reference clips from each Beach Boy."
This is why, if you write code for a living, you can't "just say no" to AI. I hate the AI art and music, but this is just how you write code now.

local hit!Bob: So I grew up in the small, not so great town called Monroe, Michigan.

[marv albert voice] YUSSS!Frank In Queens: My take is that he (and anyone else for that matter) can perform as long as they frigging want.

Bingo. The same stuff was being fired at Brian Wilson when and since he started touring again in the late 90's, and fans who wanted to be there loved the experience of seeing him play those songs live. I'm glad I got to experience that while we still could.Sean Bikes: I thought Macca was fine on both shows, fine for an 80-something.
He gives people what they want for the most part.
What people seem to want is not so much "Oh let's hear an amazing performance" as it is "Let's revel in the fact that we have a Beatle still playing for us!"
It's as much as he's there at all and still doing it at a decent level.

I enjoyed the shows, but he's sitting at a piano both times I saw him. Maybe I put too much stock in that. He had a guitar stand, which I got excited for, but he used it only for balancing when he stood up.I think his voice is holding up - or it has a shorter distance to fall than others - but the setlists, like you said, are not intended to be crowd-pleasers.

I dunno. Places like the Garden or Giants Stadium are going to be inherently conservative in whom they book because their only concern is filling every seat. Hull City Tigers (aka Dan Morfitt FC) have just scored very late in injury time against Boro and looks like they're going up.
This ends the soccer portion of today's show.

I sometimes call their musical guests "strippers, rappers and children." You hardly ever see an actual rock performer or band (I don't know what the hell Geese was but the song I saw was awful), & every so often they book someone who can actually write or play. I remember seeing Father John Misty on a few years ago, don't know how he snuck on. Also, usually looks like whatever current Vegas-outfit-wearing singer is on is lip-syncing.Handy Haversack:

I think booking musical acts at this point is simply functional for the show now. It serves to give the performers a couple of breaks during the show's 90 minute run time. If the slot was ever shortened to 60 minutes, the music portions would be out the window.Sean Bikes:

Years ago -- 2011ish? 2014? -- my friend Iain and I got up extra early to go to a bar in Manhattan that had all the soccer so we could support Hibs against Hearts in the Scottish cup. We got there at 9 AM. I brought a loaf of banana bread from my aunt. bartender put the game on one screen way down at the end of the bar as everyone else was there for some EPL big games that I didn't know anything about. One other guy had driven up from South Jersey to catch the game. It was just the three of us.Almost immediately Hibs' best player got a red card and it was 4-0 at the half.
The banana bread was excellent.

The issue there is "any song identification app". AI code assistants can do some surprising things but cant usually work with other applications, outside of ones like git that work completely on the command line. That's probably a hurdle that's very easy for the developers of the music apps themselves to jump over.myron feld:

"For the backend, I'm using FastAPI with resemblyzer to generate voice embeddings and librosa for audio loading, plus numpy and scipy for similarity calculations. On the frontend, I'll use React with Vite and TailwindCSS, adding Wavesurfer.js for waveform visualization and a custom timeline component. The core algorithm will load the audio, compute continuous embeddings with resemblyzer to identify voice segments, then match them against reference clips from each Beach Boy."This is why, if you write code for a living, you can't "just say no" to AI. I hate the AI art and music, but this is just how you write code now.
