Ah, nice. I've noticed over the years (decades actually) that the pirates I hear on shortwave are quite interesting in a radio sense but musically their tastes are usually pretty mainstream! Granted I'm in California so I never manage to hear European or UK pirates
5:09am
Pea Sea:
I don't know how well you'd be able to hear this on the east coast but there are some very trippy Indonesian stations around 6980 kHz that aren't exactly pirates, more like bootleggers, but they often chant and do weird side effects for hours
5:09am
hoeg:
yup i remember pirate radio advertising hairdressers, solicitors and warehouse parties in my city, sometimes you'd walk up the street and many people would be playing the same station out their window

definitely for her; one of her biggest struggles was being, or appearing vulnerable.
5:12am
Pea Sea:
My understanding is that it's common on these small Indonesian islands for people to use shortwave transceivers as a sort of substitute for telephone service for island-to-island communication...and somehow people just realized that it's fun to chant and make noise on them when there's nothing to communicate. It's like a whole subculture

Wow, you were an early adopter. Those Walkmans didn't become popular until the mid-80s, I think.
It's SO hard to get those frequencies out here but I'm sooo sure I can find some recordings online to check out!
But! To chat about the main stream music of modern pirate stations - I feel like these days it's less about the music and more about the art of broadcast, which is kinda bitchin'! It's become more of a storytelling platform and a way to flex engineering skills!
I found a load of old tapes of pirate stations from the 90s - all next to a bin. Like, Drum & Bass, Jungle & Techno stuff. I think was the imaginatively named 'Pirate FM' station
That's definitely the case in the US. It's the love of radio. It has long (like, since the 70s if not before) been an open secret in the normally straight-laced amateur radio community that MANY American shortwave pirate radio stations are run by licensed hams...probably most actually.
Oh 10000%! I'm a licensed ham too! It's a bit about the ability to scoop under the radar and that's... kinda hot! It's about skill! Same with like Voice of the Voyager and such!
5:25am

It's not a coincidence that shorwave pirate stations have tended to congregate right below the 40 meter amateur band...

How come i can sometimes easily figure out how to sign in and have my avatar visible and other times i have no idea of what's going on and absolutely can't?

Ah, nice. I've noticed over the years (decades actually) that the pirates I hear on shortwave are quite interesting in a radio sense but musically their tastes are usually pretty mainstream! Granted I'm in California so I never manage to hear European or UK piratesWilliam Hellfire:
↳ Song: "Sacrifice" by "Motörhead"
!!!!!!Erik in VT:
↳ dave @5:00
in the best ways … 😉HP_Sorcery: UK pirate stations were a massive part of the rave scene in the 90s here
dave: U know it!
Cali4nyaStreamin': gave away my 8-tracks to a lunchbox museum. some were bootlegged
Deano de los Muertos: Great set
Pea Sea: I don't know how well you'd be able to hear this on the east coast but there are some very trippy Indonesian stations around 6980 kHz that aren't exactly pirates, more like bootleggers, but they often chant and do weird side effects for hours
hoeg: yup i remember pirate radio advertising hairdressers, solicitors and warehouse parties in my city, sometimes you'd walk up the street and many people would be playing the same station out their window

HP_Sorcery:
↳ Song: "Chicken" by "The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster"
haha i used to live downstaris from Matchbox B Line guitar player, in BrightonHP_Sorcery: Seemed a decent sort
Erik in VT:
↳ Cali4nyaStreamin' @5:07
… that’s funny, i gave my lunchboxes to an 8-Track museum… they were metal-y. 😏coelacanth∅:
↳ Maggie Hertz! @5:00
definitely for her; one of her biggest struggles was being, or appearing vulnerable.Pea Sea: My understanding is that it's common on these small Indonesian islands for people to use shortwave transceivers as a sort of substitute for telephone service for island-to-island communication...and somehow people just realized that it's fun to chant and make noise on them when there's nothing to communicate. It's like a whole subculture
cosmic matrix: good morning! oooh “bubbles” sounds like a great home base!
Pea Sea:
↳ Cali4nyaStreamin' @5:02
Wow, you were an early adopter. Those Walkmans didn't become popular until the mid-80s, I think.Marc15: Pre-September 11
Deano de los Muertos: I wanna hang out in Bubbles 🫧
Cali4nyaStreamin':
↳ Song: "Rave + Drool" by "The Killjoys"
kinda reminds me of the Lemonheads [Dando]Cali4nyaStreamin': good though
cosmic matrix: in 2001 i went to england to check out crop circles! camped behind “the barge” pub in devizes with mystic merlin.

Oh this is some of my fave pirate lore to research! We didn't really have much like it out here in the US!Strandlund: Happy Friday to ya, Maggie!!
Cali4nyaStreamin':
↳ Pea Sea @5:15
ok a small cassette player anywayBillyLundun: ooohh love those pink mini discs!
Maggie Hertz!:
↳ Pea Sea @5:12
It's SO hard to get those frequencies out here but I'm sooo sure I can find some recordings online to check out! But! To chat about the main stream music of modern pirate stations - I feel like these days it's less about the music and more about the art of broadcast, which is kinda bitchin'! It's become more of a storytelling platform and a way to flex engineering skills!
HP_Sorcery:
↳ Maggie Hertz! @5:19
I found a load of old tapes of pirate stations from the 90s - all next to a bin. Like, Drum & Bass, Jungle & Techno stuff. I think was the imaginatively named 'Pirate FM' stationMaggie Hertz!:

That's definitely the case in the US. It's the love of radio. It has long (like, since the 70s if not before) been an open secret in the normally straight-laced amateur radio community that MANY American shortwave pirate radio stations are run by licensed hams...probably most actually.Maggie Hertz!:
↳ Pea Sea @5:24
Oh 10000%! I'm a licensed ham too! It's a bit about the ability to scoop under the radar and that's... kinda hot! It's about skill! Same with like Voice of the Voyager and such!Pea Sea: It's not a coincidence that shorwave pirate stations have tended to congregate right below the 40 meter amateur band...
Creature Boy: How come i can sometimes easily figure out how to sign in and have my avatar visible and other times i have no idea of what's going on and absolutely can't?
Delicate Chester:
↳ hoeg @5:09
Thanks, gonna give this site a digging into. The story of UK pirate radio stations (such as Radio Caroline) that used to broadcast from ships in international waters to circumvent the law is quite interesting as well, if don't know it: en.wikipedia.org...
Delicate Chester:
↳ Delicate Chester @5:26
*youPea Sea: Yes, the original Voice of the Voyager broadcasts were before my time, but I loved reading about them in How to Tune the Secret Shortwave Spectrum. I think that was my favorite chapter of the book!
coelacanth∅: i hate to go during YOUR mixtape (especially since i didn't like much of the last one and i'm liking this) - but i must try to sleep now.
