I asked him about it-he files down the part he blows into so it looks like a mouthpiece, then he does a lot of experimenting to find the shells. He gets about 5 notes a shell (and overblows to get them an octave above), has to switch shells often to get full scales. He even did 2 shells at once (Shades of Rahsaan).↳ Jeff Golick @11:23
