Coffee got me thinking about the old Automats, stumbled upon this gem:
"'Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee' by Irving Berlin: Written for the 1932 Broadway musical Face the Music, this song became the unofficial theme song for Horn & Hardart's Automats. It perfectly captures the Depression-era optimism and the comfort of meeting friends at the Automat."

Jay Current:
Coffee songs go back surprisingly far. I recall from music class that Bach had a mini-opera about coffee.

I guess if Hoover said now was the time to buy... in 1932 stocks could only go up

Hello Jay! Yes, that's true I have that cantata in several renditions, but it's too warm to digitize the ones recorded before 1962 today :-)

Hi, Jan! Was tuned in to Matt's show on the Mothership and he was talking about quitting caffeine. I did that once about a dozen years ago or so. It caused me to lose my appetite. It's a rare side effect, but it can happen. It was scary. I went back to drinking coffee, however, I cut out the evening java.
It seems like the satire of the song got missed by the later renditions.

Hello Krys! Yes, I don't drink coffee in the evening or late afternoon anymore either...

Krys O.:
In my 20s when I worked in record stores in Manhattan, the shifts were wither 2pm to 10pm or 9 am to 6pm. I would drink jumbo cups of coffee at all hours. My hands would shake. The worst was when I was prescribed old skool theophylline for asthma. I was supposed to avoid all caffeine. When I did drink some coffee, it made my heart race terribly, like I was on a roller coaster going at superspeed down a steep slope. Yikes!
Heya, Krys. The last year or so, I've decreased my coffee intake. None after lunch and none after 8pm. Herbal tea or water after that, but I've found I'm a bit calmer before bed.

JoeH:
Studies show that those who drink their coffee black are more likely to be serial killers and those who drink half caf, soy caramel macchiato latte with no foam and sweet and low are more likely to be their victims.

Our chorus director taught us a song in elementary school for the spring concert that went: C-o-f-f-e-e, coffee is not for me,
It's a drink some people wake up with,
That it makes them nervous is no myth,
Slaves to a coffee cup, they can't give coffee up.
It turns out that the song was attributed incorrectly to Mozart:
Ah! The Mozart Kafeelied, a "Kanon zu drei Stimmen" ("Canon for three Voices):
C-A-F-F-E-E, trink nicht so viel Kaffee!
Nicht für Kinder ist der Türkentrank,
Schwächt die Nerven, macht dich blaß und krank,
Sei doch kein Muselmann, der ihn nicht lassen kann.
Translation:
C-o-f-f-e-e, coffee is not for me,
It's a drink some people wake up with,
That it makes them nervous is no myth,
Slaves to a coffee cup, they can't give coffee up.
Well ... I think that was once attributed to W.A. Mozart, but has since been found to be the work of a lesser known German composer named Karl Gottlieb Hering (1766-1853).
