This string quartet has some heavy baggage. Schönberg wrote it while his wife, Mathilde, had run off with an artist that they knew, who was 6 years younger than her. The Quartet No2 is dedicated to her. After several months, Mathilde returned to Schönberg (and their 2 children). The painter, Richard Gerstl, died by suicide shortly after she left him.
