↳ Song: "Let the Four Winds Blow" by "Roy Brown"

The production on this really puts Roy's voice in the forefront.   11:08am

Very much outside his normal sound   🎸 11:17am
Jay Current:

↳ Song: "I'm In Sharp When I Hit The Coast" by "Joe Turner...

Conversely, this is exactly in Joe Turner's wheelhouse. Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
MHLee: Not sure what just happened there.   🎸 11:21am
Jay Current:

↳ Song: "Tamburitza Boogie" by "Louis Jordan and his Tympa...

I think this is the first Louis Jordan song I've heard with organ (at least with organ this prominent.) Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
MHLee:

↳ Jay Current @11:21

Yeah, I thought the same   🎸 11:23am
Jay Current:

↳ MHLee @11:22

It makes him sound a lot more modern. Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
MHLee:

↳ Song: "Flying Disk" by "Todd Rhodes Orchestra"

not sure if this about ufos or frisbees Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:25am

Pretty brittle for that Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
MHLee:

↳ Song: "You Got to Run Me Down" by "Jazz Gillum"

I believe all the musicians were on strike in 1947 yet records still got made   🎸 11:38am
Jay Current:

↳ MHLee @11:31

While I know 45cat may not be the most comprehensive catalog, the dropoff in 78s due to WWII and the musician's strike is staggering to see charted out. 1943 was the worst year for new releases since the '10s: www.45cat.com... Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
MHLee:

↳ Jay Current @11:38

There was a second strike 1947-1948 Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
Feldy: Hey MHLee! I’m gonna work on my girlfriend’s car and this is the perfect soundtrack Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am

MHLee: Hey Feldy!   🎸 11:44am
Jay Current:

↳ MHLee @11:39

I assume there were more specialty and small labels by that point, given the post-war economy and end of government rationing? Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am

↳ Feldy @12:06

I concur, good sir. Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
MHLee:

↳ Mr. Oxford @12:06

I was looking at water faucet earlier... you're the only person to have favorited it outside of this show... on my other show Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
MHLee:

↳ Feldy @12:06

Thanks Feldy   12:14pm
JoeH: Hey MHLee glad I could catch another portion of your show. Avatar 12:14pm
Mr. Oxford:

↳ MHLee @12:07

Oh I missed that track as I missed the first hour of the show. I do remember listening to it on your Merrily We Roll Along show back in Jan 2023. It was a Friday afternoon (in this part of the world) and I was at home recovering from a surgery. So I was listening to WFMU shows I usually did not get a chance to listen to as I'd otherwise be in the office for work. Good memory. Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
MHLee: Hey Joe! Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm

Some more Vee-Jay vocals Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
MHLee:

↳ Song: "Get Way Back" by "Joe Tex"

How about this one? Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
WR: Those early Joe Tex you have been playing all have such personality. As they say, I really slept on his pre-Skinny Legs and All career.   🎸 12:31pm
Jay Current:

↳ WR @12:30

Joe Tex didn't have a charting single on the Hot 100 or the R&B chart until 1964, so it seems like a lot of people sadly slept on him. Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
MHLee:

↳ WR @12:30

I'm impressed by the arrangement and vocals on that one. It sounds much more like a 60s soul number, Avatar 12:38pm
Mr. Oxford: Unfortunately I have to head out. THanks MHLee for a great show, I shall check it out again especially for "Water Faucet". Have a lovely Saturday everyone! Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
MHLee:

↳ Mr. Oxford @12:38

See you later!   🎸 12:41pm
Jay Current:

↳ Song: "Baby Be There" by "The Kings featuring Bobby Hall"

Kind of surprised they didn't use the sax for the J in Jax Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
MHLee:

↳ Jay Current @12:41

not all of these designs are logical... as modern shows us Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
MHLee:

↳ Song: "Fishin' Pole" by "Tom Archia And His All Stars"

The only thing I know about this label is early Muddy Waters is on it   🎸 12:44pm
Jay Current:

↳ MHLee @12:43

Makes the record label name seem a bit grandiose in that context   12:44pm
Andrew in Toronto:

Great show!
Thanks! Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm

thanks Krys O.   🎸 12:50pm
Jay Current:

↳ Krys O. @12:46

Ah, a predecessor to Chess Records, but not to the extent that the two have corporate continuity with each other. Thanks for the link.   🎸 12:52pm
Jay Current: I wonder how many of these labels are still around and active with new music. I know Mercury and Atlantic are. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Krys O.:

↳ Jay Current @12:50

My pleasure. This history is in my wheelhouse. That Clemson article is a behemoth. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm

Until recently, I didn't know that The Kinsey Report had mainstream recognition when it came out in the early '50s. Sure, most of it was scandal gossip and my small town Texas parents my not have heard about it (though I have to wonder even about that). Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Krys O.: That's so funny! I start my show with The Valentines. Dave Clowney, who became Dave "Baby" Cortez is in the band. Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
MHLee:

↳ WR @12:55

I thought it was kinda shocking material to see in a song to be honest. Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
MHLee:

↳ Krys O. @12:56

Synergy!   🎸 12:57pm
Jay Current:

↳ Krys O. @12:56

There's impressive continuity between WFMU shows at times. Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm

↳ Song: "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" by "Dave "Baby" Cortez"

love this label design Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Krys O.:

↳ WR @12:55

People would present their shock at the Kinsey Report all the while secretly wanting to read it. It was the Fifty Shades of Gray of its day. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Krys O.:

↳ MHLee @12:57

I yam psychic.   🎸 12:59pm
Jay Current: That later Imperial label looks so dull compared to the saturated red one. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
