regina j: I love Barry Walters and I love this book. It's been really fun to pick it up and read a chapter at a time -- it can be consumed in bite-sized increments, and reading it is as fun as it is enlightening. The best kind of music books -- at least in my opinion -- are the ones that make you want to hear those records immediately, and this book definitely does that for me. I'm so happy to have made the intro: I know Barry's an admirer of your work, so it made perfect sense. I genuinely love this book, which I think is a really important work, but not dry or clinical: it's such a fun, great read. Thank you for having him on! Avatar 🥀 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm

↳ Song: "Waltzing Will Trilogy" by "Lavender Country"

As a thrift shop record digger, I used to see the Lavender Country record often, so it must have sold a good number of copies. Once I found Peter Grudzien's the Unicorn, a masterpiece of gay counrty, but never saw another copy in the wild, though it has since been reissued. Avatar 🥀 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Jeff Moore: Almost-parallel with the "gay country" discussion:

Some years back some friends and I attended a multi-week squaredancing course in a venue somewhere on I think Hudson Street... Turns out it was Gay Squaredancing we all learned. What's the difference? The same fundamentals, but everything was done with more FLOURISHES. Super fun.

  3:41pm
Sean: Waltzing was an amazing piece of lyrical prowess. Thanks for the guidance!   3:42pm

I respectfully disagree: as much as I love listening to tunes on WFMU, so many of the DJs regularly offer insightful, interesting interviews -- Mona, Michael Shelley, Todd-o-Phonic Todd, Evan Funk Davies, and Joe McGasko are all super talented interviewers. If you're not into whatever they're talking about, there are multiple streams and thousands of hours of archives you can dig into. Avatar 3:51pm

I remember that time well, was in an art high school (like Fame) and everyone was seeking some level of creative input within the city.
I was in bands from 1980 on and you would really get jazzed when your band was in the Village Voice listings.
I still have a few I cut out and kept.

Tuned in 10’ ago. Wanted to say friends and I dug yr set at summerstage on Wednesday. We lit up at “pink frost”! Thx for spinning, Mona.

(Chills fb sez Martin Phillips headstone is in place. His two sisters write:

Just letting you all know that Martin is resting peacefully at Purakaunui Cemetery, near Port Chalmers in Dunedin. His headstone went on today, and it looks beautiful.
And no, that is not soil on the headstone; it's a reflection!
He's right down the bottom left of the cemetery if you want to visit.
I think Martin would have been happy with it.
We'll be putting in some plants there when the weather warms up a bit.
A sad day for us. We miss him so much.
Thanks

I definitely didn't know what an asshole he was until well after I had fallen head over heels in love with their music. I was introduced to the Smiths by the manager of Unique Clothing Warehouse in the Village, which was one of the many jobs I juggled while I was in college. The album hadn't been released in the States yet, and my manager Joellen played it in the store every single day. I was OBSESSED.
