Interesting how early Beefheart and early Tom Waits kind of mirrored each other vocally. Both had gruff but pleasing singing voices as evidenced in this song. In later years both, while still amazing artists, became at times unintelligible vocally. Still love them both. Never got to see Waits, saw Beefheart with Zappa on the Bongo Fury Tour

I'd say everything through Green is impeccable. For me, there's a dip after that, although I know Automatic and Out of Time are popular. New Adventures in Hi-Fi was a real return to form, I thought, and I stack it up with the peak years. Monster has somehow grown on me more and more over the years.
No pain. No swelling. No hard foods. The dentist called me in the evening to see how I was doing. When I told him I had no pain (two ibuprofen) and no swelling, he did not believe me, but was very happy. This dentist is way better than the one I had who let me get to this point.

As someone born after the '80s, R.E.M. were a band that I didn't "get" for a long time. They could show some lyrical sophistication, but musically, they just felt like a pleasant, straightforward rock group, not particularly like the alternative to anything. It was only after being exposed to the dozens of synthetic, MTV pandering AOR soundalikes that dominated the back half of the '80s and early '90s that I realized why groups like R.E.M. were such a big deal at the time.

It's hard to overstate how important REM was to my own musical growth. I went to college in Athens partly because of them - and so did a lot of other people who ended up starting bands. REM made Athens fully blossom into a special music town.catsonholiday: I remember being afraid to buy the Chronic Town EP at 12-13 years old because the gargoyle on the cover scared me 😂

I'd say everything through Green is impeccable. For me, there's a dip after that, although I know Automatic and Out of Time are popular. rx "rexy" scabin: Did he say something bad about Buffalo?
Jay Current: As someone born after the '80s, R.E.M. were a band that I didn't "get" for a long time.
