The Freeborne was organized from the remnants of two local frat rock groups, the Indigos and the Missing Links. The two groups performed covers of Top 40 radio hits, but key players sought to move on from both bands in hopes of writing original material. The album that resulted was titled Peak Impressions. They recorded three of their debut album's songs at ESP studios, and the rest at CBS studios, in New York City. Despite the Freeborne's age range—between ages 17 and 19—the group featured three capable multi-instrumentalists, who played a wide variety of orchestral instruments including piano, harpsichord, cello, trumpet, flute, and recorder.

Max Frost and the Troopers were a fictional rock music group created for the exploitation film Wild in the Streets, released in 1968. The film featured Christopher Jones as the highly influential singer Max Frost. The songs performed by Frost and his band, a group that was never formally named in the film, were credited to Max Frost and the Troopers in the subsequent singles and album. The band name "Troopers" is based on the term "troops", the designation Frost used in the film to refer to his friends and followers.
A studio group (or possibly The 13th Power) appeared on the soundtrack album for the film, along with incidental music penned by Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann and composed by Les Baxter; however, the songs were not originally credited to Max Frost and the Troopers, but rather to The 13th Power.

The Misunderstood are responsible for two of the best and most influental singles of the great US 1967 psychedelic season, I Can Take You To The Sun and Children Of The Sun, and hold a steady place as a cult group among acid rockers. In 1981 three original members, coming from different roads, decided to reform the band and recorded a 6 track demo of revisited versions of some of their best work, adding raga and hard rock influences as a newer background.

The Fire Escape was an American psychedelic rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1967. Existing mainly as a studio group composed of unknown session musicians, the band was masterminded by record producer Kim Fowley and Michael Lloyd. The project produced one album called Psychotic Reaction, which contained mainly cover versions of popular songs from the era. It is reported that Sky Saxon of the garage rock band, the Seeds and Mars Bonfire of Steppenwolf, played on some of the tracks.

Simply Saucer is a Canadian rock band formed during the 1970s. Based in Hamilton, Ontario, the band consisted of guitarist and vocalist Edgar Breau, keyboardist John LaPlante (billed by the stage name Ping Romany), bass guitarist Kevin Christoff, and drummer Neil DeMarchant. The band's style has been described as a hybrid of proto-punk and psychedelia and they form a "Rust-belt punk" style, along with The Stooges, MC5, and Alice Cooper. The group's references also included German progressive rock, or Krautrock, and early electronic music pioneers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen.

1968
|
In 1968, Simon Dupree and the Big Sound released a single under the name "The Moles." This was done secretively by putting the tape into a subway locker in London and sending the key to "a major English music publication with a letter stating that the tape should be released on the Parlophone label" The tape contained the songs:
We Are the Moles (Part 1)
We Are the Moles (Part 2)
The identity of the band was not disclosed, and there was speculation that it might be The Beatles. Eventually the secret was revealed.
Some additional details:
The single was produced by George Martin.
The vocals were thought by listeners to have been sung by Ringo Starr.

Great Lakes Gospel: Detroit

The Numero Group
|
2026
|
Over the decades, Numero has excavated a metric ton of recordings from the depths of Detroit. From all manner of mini Motowns we've uncovered soul, R&B, funk, disco, boogie, and by nature of proximity—gospel. Previous examinations of the Revival and Big Mack labels turned up more than a few new apocryphal hymns, and Great Lakes Gospel Vol. 2 compiles a dozen curious church groups devotionally reaching towards the genre's frayed edge. Get lost in ecstatic choir funk, pulpit rappin', direct-injection guitar solos, and the holy spirit, should it move you. Look around the room. You could start a church with this thing.
