I can't imagine what it must have been like in 1978 to experience this song on the dancefloor for the first time, and know that the future has just entered the room.
♥
:
Wasn't Kraftwerk making electronic dance music all throughout the 70s?

Buckaroo @12:20
There's a great story of Eno rushing into the room to play it for Bowie, asserting exactly that.

Sparks in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder have a song called "My Other Voice" which I always interpreted as the singer being the synthesizer.
Great song.

Brian Eno also commented on electronic music not really developing until the late 70s and 80s.

Just tuned in, this is exactly why I love WFMU ❤️
:
Per Wendy... I was interviewed by her in 1999 as a potential designer for her retrospective box set on ESD (East Side Digital).
Got to visit her in her home studio on lower Broadway. She treated me as lovingly as a grandson, but was highly particular... about image reproduction, color balance on press, remastering... everything! And what John says about her editorial imperative is absolutely correct. I was just there to be a pair of hands, and not to express any aesthetic opinions.
The reason, I suspect, why I didn't do the project is after the meeting I wrote to the record company that her proposed title of "Switched On Box" may have knock-on effects from lesser-evolved commenters. They didn't understand what I was talking about so I had to give a brief lesson on slang terms for genitalia.
Even though I didn't get the gig, I still cherish the memory of her showing me *the synthesizer* that she used to record Switched On Bach ("Oh, I have to resolder some connections")... the kitchen oven where she was baking the old tapes before remastering... her cat named Subito... the Grammy casually display amongst a mild amount of clutter... and her kindness.
🆒

Just tuning in, but I'm gonna go ahead and clickystar this whole playlist right now!

She also complained about Kubrick just using "needle drops" for Clockwork Orange. She wanted to rerecord everything.

My Dad had this album. I also remember him blasting A Clockwork Orange late one night when I was a little.
:
People were openly smoking up at Bach concerts by virtuoso organist Virgil Fox around and after the release of Switched, so absolutely they were pairing Wendy with weed!

Stevie Wonder's blind, on top of it all! What difference would it have even made?
:
i know it’s a long shot, but i’ve always wanted an oral history of her Weird Al collab! how did that come to happen?? how did such a particular artist come to partner with such a wacky guy?
:
Love the talk about Wendy. I luckily have the Bach album on vinyl.
🆒

:
wow it is such a particular joy!! looking back on her and other trans people at the time makes me choke up a little. it took me so long to be who i am and that happened only 5 or so years ago! Ah!!
♥
:
Thanks for this show - I just happened to listen and I'm glad I did. Gotta get out my vinyl.
♥
:
This is a really interesting interview, so glad I tuned in. Did anyone else see "Sisters with Transistors" and think there might've been some transphobia going on in the coverage of Wendy? I felt like she got a bit of short shrift as a "mere" interpreter of existing scores, but the filmmakers knew they'd better include her.
:
Boy you guys can talk
:
↳
jnalv @1:32
Although Weird Al is weird & wacky, as you may well know, he's a 100% legit musician and it does not surprise me at all that musicians of any & all backgrounds want to collab with Al

Crownless Gander @1:45
I am not familiar with the film, but will need to look it up.
Why do you think the film was dismissive?
♥
:
↳
zachary @1:46
You'll see if you watch it. It's generally very celebratory of all the women I covers, but some dismissive comments about Wendy's historic importance are allowed through, and that importance fairly downgraded in general.
:
↳
Roberto @1:43
Heck yes!! the world needs more AL - more cowbell & even more AL!!!
:
sorry i just tuned in late, not sure if you talked about it already, but did wendy work on the soundtrack for deepthroat?
:
did you all already talk about her Peter and the Wolf record with Weird Al?
:
I once found a copy of The Shining Soundtrack in a record store $1.00 bin. That was a big moment and a feeling I’ll never forget, because it was so difficult to find her recordings from that era.
♥
:
i'm didn't realize she did The Shining soundtrack! this show is so fascinating, thank you again. sad i have to step into a meeting, but look forward to finishing the show in the archive. thank you again jesse and john!!
:
Really? With all of her accomplishments: world class audio engineer, studio designer and hands-on builder, electronic music pioneer (she almost single-handedly made sunthesis tonal),close friend and colaborator with Bob Moog, working twice with Kubrick, Tron soundtrack, software designer, digital synthesis pioneer, degrees in physics, world class musician and arranger, etc, and you chose to focus on her personal life? If you did shows on Philip Glass or Susan Ciani (or anyone else), would you discuss their sexuality? How much work does she have to do before her personal life is a non-topic?
🆒

seeing the eclipse in vermont was such a soul expanding moment. ive never experienced something like it.

The past 2 hours have covered all of the accomplishments you listed. Jesse and John's conversation around Wendy's personal life very much focused on her gender/sexuality being a non-issue to her. That's something they made very clear.

Anyway, I hope you do talk about her record with Weird Al
:
It's been a non-issue to her for 50 years, apparently it's still an issue for others. Including this program's hosts. Or they wouldn't have brought it up.
:
I’m struck with how much of an inspiration Luna must have been to those composing for educational films, particularly science films shown in contemporary classrooms.

This show is so fascinating, so much of these compositions I have not heard before. When you hear Wendy Carlos it’s typically “Switched On” and some of the famous soundtracks. The other lesser known works are so powerful and beautiful. And the cats! I just love it. Great show.

For those who might like a great synth for their phones or tablet: ETHERAL DIALPAD. Twin or single screen thermin w adjustable scales and effects. You can play it immediately for soundscapes effects or even do melodies after a bit. Not at Play store, but at other trustworthy sites. 2 different versions. One kilobits , one megabits. For Android, maybe i , I haven't looked.
