The Bananafish Garden (originally the Universal Theater/Loew's 46th Street Theater) was a historic 1970s rock and roll concert venue located on New Utrecht Avenue in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.Named after a J.D. Salinger story, the Fillmore-sized hall hosted legendary acts including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Iron Butterfly.History of the VenueThe Theater Years: Opened in 1927 as a classic movie house. The Rock Era: Converted into a music venue in the early 1970s, acting as a sister stage to other prominent Brooklyn locations.TV Tapings: The venue was used for tapings of ABC's In Concert music television program in the mid-1970s.Present Day: The building remains on New Utrecht Avenue, though it is no longer an active concert space and has been utilized for retail purposes.

Andres @1:12

♥
:
↳
The Oscar @1:32
You are correct!
:
You had to see Caroliner to really experience their thing, it was a whole theater with insane costumes with extra limbs and full backlight backdrops. Hard to follow the narratives but they did have stories. I saw some copies of Bababafush at Record Grouch a few weeks ago, I’d wager they are still there…
🎸
♥
:
Caroliner is one of my alltime favorites. I saw them in the early 90s in philly at the khyber pass. it was on good friday before easter so they cut angry faces on the bottom of easter baskets and made them into masks
🎸
♥
:
Thanks for recounting you Caroliner related rabbit hole adventure!

I have a bananafish mag, might take me a bit to scan it.
:
Ha ha Bananafish
🎸
♥
:
I'll check to see if I still have any Bananafishes. If I do, you can have them, Jessica.
:
A perfect day for Bananafish is a short story by JD Salinger. The main character is Seymour Glass who is based on Salinger's real brother.

:
“banana fish” is/was a regional slang for a used condom and growing up in NY/NJ in the 60’s it was a common-enough beach term that I assumed it was the Salinger reference and that subsequent usage was referencing this slang.

And who doesn’t wish they were born in an earlier time. Unless you are a technofuturist or some such bumpkin. But rest assured in the 80s and 90s we also wished for this. Reagan cane in when we were barely aware of how things were and then AIDS accompanied our pubescence.
