The Yankees spoiled Tony Vitello's debut as San Francisco Giants manager.
The San Francisco Giants needed a good week. They got one. A three-game series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park provided a lift for a team that has been searching for consistency through the first month of the season. San Francisco took two of three, dropping the finale but banking a series victory against one of the best teams in the National League.
The win was meaningful. So was the context around it. At 11-14, the Giants sit 3.5 games back of the final NL wild card spot, and the offense has not made things easy. San Francisco ranks last in the majors in both on-base percentage and runs scored. The bullpen, sitting 19th in team ERA, has been equally inconsistent.
Reinforcements, however, may be on the way.

The latest Giants injury report brought updates on two relievers working their way back through the minor league system. Left-hander Sam Hentges and right-hander Joel Peguero have both been sidelined since March 25, and both are currently rehabbing with Triple-A Sacramento.
Hentges has been recovering from left shoulder and right knee surgery. Through his first three rehab outings with Sacramento, he has not allowed a run across three innings of work. That is an encouraging early sign for a pitcher the Giants have been waiting on.
Peguero, working back from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, has had a rougher go of it. He has allowed four earned runs across his first five rehab appearances. The plan is for him to make at least one more appearance with Sacramento before any further decisions are made.
Both pitchers are targeting a return at some point in the first half of the season.
The Giants bullpen this year has a team ERA of 3.28 (5th). They will eventually add free agent signings Sam Hentges and Jason Foley. Randy Rodriguez is out with TJ.

The Giants won a series against the Dodgers this week. Both Hentges and Peguero are trending toward returns in the first half of the season, which is welcome news for a roster that has been running thin on pitching depth.
San Francisco sits 3.5 games back of a wild card spot at 11-14. The offense ranks last in the majors in on-base percentage and runs scored. The bullpen has been inconsistent. There is work to do on multiple fronts.
Getting two arms back into the mix does not fix everything. But for a team still trying to find its footing in late April, it is a step in the right direction.
