Cameron Young reacts to winning at Donald Trump's course

Cameron Young won the Cadillac Championship at The Blue Monster at Trump National Doral Miami.

Young shot -19 and cruised to a wire-to-wire win. He led after every round and won by six shots over Scottie Scheffler. After winning the event, United States President Donald Trump gave Young a thumbs-up, and the golfer was asked about it and winning at his course.

“It’s very unique,” Young said after the event. “He’s nothing if not a very, very interesting man. He’s very powerful, and it’s an honor to get to play in front of him.

“Hugely grateful to him and his family and his organization that has these beautiful properties and allows us to come and play great golf tournaments on them. This is a special place and great championship golf course, I’m thankful to have it back in the schedule.”

It was a stellar showing from Young, who picked up his second win of the season after winning The Players Championship in March. It’s also his third career win on Tour, as Young is starting to put together great rounds of golf ahead of the next Majors.

Young Reveals What Trump Told Him After PGA Tour Win

After winning The Cadillac Championship, Young was able to speak with Trump, and the President had some kind words for him.

At the press conference, Young said Trump was very complimentary words to him after winning the PGA Tour event.

“He was just very complimentary, the way that he – you know, I’ve been fortunate to meet him before, and that’s especially with us golfers, it’s something he loves and I think appreciates how good everybody is on the PGA Tour,” Young said. “So really just hugely complementary, and I, of course, thanked him for hosting us and that was about it.”

Young, meanwhile, admitted that walking the 18th fairway with Trump, giving him a standing ovation, was a unique experience.

“Once you get out there … you’re out doing your job, but everything that leads up to that, you know, the place is obviously crawling in Secret Service and security and police, and it has a definitely a different feel,” Young said. “I came out to go down to the side door where we’ve been coming in the clubhouse all week and kind of had two guys step together and say, ‘Hey, we’re not letting anybody through this way right now.’

“So, I was just walking in toward the locker room toward dining and had to turn around and walked all the way around the clubhouse to get back to that door. So, there’s little things like that that’s obviously different with the President here, and it changed the rhythm of the day a little bit to start, but it was already so thrown off by the delays that, you know, it didn’t matter too much.”

Young shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday.

How Much Did PGA Tour Event Pay?

The Cadillac Championship wasn’t a signature event, so the purse isn’t as high as other events.

However, the PGA Tour event had a purse of $20 million, and Young earned  700 FedExCup points and $3.6 million with the win.

Scheffler, who finished second, earned $2.16 million. Ben Griffin, who finished third, earned $1.36 million.

The next PGA Tour event is the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow this weekend. The Myrtle Beach Classic will also take place this weekend.
