Maple Leafs leaning towards a new-look coaching staff to complement front office change

It’s a new era for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016 and, a few weeks prior to the end of the 2025-26 NHL season, dismissed general manager Brad Treliving.

Treliving, who was the former GM of the Calgary Flames, had been in his role since 2023, replacing Kyle Dubas following his own termination. And now, the Maple Leafs have officially hired a successor.

Coming into the fold is John Chayka, the former GM of the Arizona Coyotes (now known as the Utah Mammoth). Additionally, the Maple Leafs have hired Mats Sundin, their former captain, as senior executive adviser for hockey operations.

But according to a new report from NHL Insider David Pagnotta, there is one member of the Leafs front office who isn’t expected to return.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Are Reportedly Expected To Move On From Shane Doan

According to a report late on Sunday evening from NHL Insider David Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs are expected to part ways with Shane Doan, who was serving as assistant general manager.

“With Chayka & Sundin now at the top of the Hockey Ops totem pole in Toronto, expect a few more front office changes to eventually occur. Among them, I’m told Shane Doan’s tenure with the Maple Leafs is coming to an end,” Pagnotta wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Doan had previously served in the Coyotes’ front office as Chief Hockey Development Officer. Additionally, he had experience on the international stage as Hockey Canada’s Assistant General Manager for the Men’s National Team; he also served as General Manager for Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, as well as the 2022 IIHF World Championship and the Spengler Cup in 2021 and 2022.

A first round pick (seventh overall) of the Winnipeg Jets in the 1994 NHL Draft, Doan spent his entire playing career with the organization, from their days in Manitoba to their move to the deserts of Arizona in 1996.

During his career, Doan scored 402 goals while adding 570 assists. He also accumulated 1,353 penalty minutes.

His son Josh Doan is currently playing with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Maple Leafs Have Hired John Chayka As GM

In a statement released to the public, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President and CEO Keith Pelley welcomed Chayka into the organization along with Sundin, who remains a beloved fan favorite from his playing days.

“Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization,” Pelley said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles, two great hockey minds that will strengthen our entire hockey club. From the start of this process, it’s been about building a championship-calibre team for our fans and our city and today is an important step towards that goal.”

In a statement, Chayka explained:

“I’m honored to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and excited to work alongside Mats and the entire organization,” Chayka said. “This is one of hockey’s most historic franchises, with a passionate fan base who want to win. I’m focused on building a team that is competitive, driven and relentless — one that is in the best position to win for our fans and for the City of Toronto.”
