The final days leading up to the Kentucky Derby are always filled with drama, and this year proved no different. Great White, who had only recently moved into the field after the earlier scratch of Silent Tactic, has now been withdrawn as well, creating yet another shake-up to the Run for the Roses lineup.

Great White was scratched moments before post time following a frightening incident at Churchill Downs. The gray gelding flipped over while being led toward the starting gate, abruptly ending his chance to compete in America’s most famous race.

The incident unfolded just as horses were being loaded for the scheduled 6:57 p.m. post time. Great White reportedly reared up and threw jockey Alex Achard before course veterinarians rushed in to evaluate both horse and rider. The Derby field then dropped from 19 horses to 18.

Late Opportunity Ends Before It Begins

Great White is owned by Three Chimneys Farm (Goncalo B. Torrealba) and John Ennis, with Ennis also serving as trainer. With career earnings of $144,003, Great White was never among the top earners in the class.

His resume, however, made him one of the more fascinating fringe contenders in the crop. His two career victories both came at Turfway Park over the synthetic Tapeta surface, including a notable win in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes. In that race, he showed grit by seizing the lead early and holding off challengers late to score at 15-1 odds.

That kind of toughness often earns respect entering Triple Crown season. Great White also displayed versatility, winning sprinting early in his career before stretching out successfully around two turns. Horses capable of adapting to distance changes can sometimes surprise when given the right setup.

Still, the biggest concern was always whether he could transfer that form to conventional dirt. When tested at 1 1/8 miles in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, Great White showed early speed, set the pace, and then faded badly to finish a distant fifth. That effort suggested he may be far more effective on synthetic footing than on the surface he would have faced in the Derby.

Pedigree Offered Hope

Even with surface concerns, Great White’s bloodlines gave handicappers reasons to believe improvement was possible. He is by Volatile, a Grade 1-winning dirt sprinter known for elite speed. Though Volatile excelled at shorter distances, some of his early offspring have hinted at stamina beyond expectations.

On the dam side, Great White is out of Kelly Bag, a daughter of Uncle Mo, one of the most influential sires in modern American racing. Uncle Mo’s lineage includes Derby winner Nyquist and classic star Mo Donegal, giving Great White a strong classic-distance influence deeper in the family.

The granddam, Birkin Bag, adds even more intrigue after winning at approximately 1 1/4 miles in Brazil – the same distance as the Derby. So while Great White’s race record left questions, his pedigree suggested there may still be untapped upside.
