Sonny Gray Injury Update: Red Sox Starter Takes Big Step — What It Means for His Return

Sonny Gray leaves the mound with trainers after suffering a hamstring injury during the third inning against the Detroit Tigers on April 20, 2026 at Fenway Park.

The Sonny Gray injury situation is trending in the right direction — and the Boston Red Sox may not be without their veteran starter for much longer.

After being placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, Gray has already taken a key step forward in his recovery, throwing a bullpen session as he works toward a return to Boston’s rotation.

With the calendar turning toward May, his timeline is starting to come into sharper focus.

Sonny Gray Injury Update: Where Things Stand

Gray exited his April 20 start against the Detroit Tigers in the third inning after throwing just 40 pitches, immediately raising concern for a Red Sox team already searching for stability on the mound.

The diagnosis — a right hamstring strain — forced Boston to adjust quickly.

Now, there’s measurable progress.

According to MassLive’s Christopher Smith, Gray threw a bullpen session on April 27, marking his first time back on a mound since the injury. Interim manager Chad Tracy said the session went smoothly, with the next step centered on building up volume.

Red Sox starter Sonny Gray (hamstring) threw a bullpen Monday. “Everything went really well,” Chad Tracy said. “And the next step would be probably when we get home in Fenway sometime to throw another bullpen with more volume.”

That progression is critical.

For a starting pitcher, returning from a hamstring injury is less about simply being pain-free and more about being able to repeat mechanics, generate drive off the rubber, and handle a full workload without compensation.

So far, Gray has cleared the first real hurdle.

How Long Is Sonny Gray Out? Return Timeline

Gray is eligible to return from the injured list on May 6, and early indications suggest that remains a realistic target.

There’s still some uncertainty.

Shortly after the injury, Gray acknowledged the open-ended nature of the recovery process:

“I don’t know what that is right now… It’s just something that’s going to take however long it’s going to take.”

Even so, the fact that he has already returned to throwing off a mound is a strong indicator that he avoided a more serious strain.

The most likely scenarios:

  • Early return: May 6–8 if he continues progressing without setbacks
  • Slight delay: Mid-May if the Red Sox opt to add another bullpen or simulated game

Given Gray’s experience and the time of year, Boston may prioritize long-term durability over rushing him back.

Rotation Impact: Why This Matters for Boston

Gray’s absence has forced the Red Sox to lean heavily on the rest of their rotation, including Brayan Bello, Garrett Crochet, Kutter Crawford, and Ranger Suárez.

The results have been uneven.

While the group has managed to cover innings, the consistency hasn’t been there — and that’s where Gray was expected to make an impact. Even in a small sample this season, he provided a steady veteran presence in a rotation still finding its footing.

His return would immediately:

  • Add stability to the rotation
  • Reduce pressure on younger arms
  • Give Boston flexibility with underperforming starters

If his timeline holds, it could come at a critical moment as the Red Sox try to steady themselves heading deeper into the schedule.

Sonny Gray 2026 Stats Before Injury

Before going on the injured list, Gray made five starts for Boston:

  • Record: 2–1
  • ERA: 4.30
  • Innings Pitched: 23.0
  • Strikeouts: 18
  • WHIP: 1.30

The numbers don’t jump off the page, but they reflect a pitcher capable of giving Boston reliable innings — something the team has needed early in the season.

Bottom Line

The most important takeaway is simple: no setbacks, and forward momentum.

Gray is back on the mound, building toward game readiness, and lining up for a potential early May return. If that timeline holds, the Red Sox avoid a prolonged rotation issue.

The next step — increasing workload and facing hitters — will determine whether that return date sticks.

For now, though, all signs are pointing in the right direction.
