After being swept by the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, the Mets are 2-15 in their last 17 games and have a horrid 9-19 record. The only team in the National League with that same record is the Philadelphia Phillies.
It’s gotten to the point where wholesale changes are inevitable; it’s just a matter of when.
On Saturday afternoon, shockwaves were sent across MLB when the Red Sox decided to fire manager Alex Cora after their atrocious start. So, the blueprint is now in place for the Mets, but who could be Carlos Mendoza’s successor?

Of course, after the Alex Cora firing, the rumors and speculation are swirling loudly around where the former Boston manager’s next gig will be.
Not long after the Red Sox decision to fire Cora, Bob Nightengale wrote (on April 25):
“You don’t think the New York Mets are asking themselves whether they should hire Cora now, and part with Carlos Mendoza?
Bleacher Report’s Scott Polachek then went ahead and predicted that the Mets could be a top landing spot for Alex Cora:
“While Carlos Mendoza led the team to the National League Championship Series in his first year in 2024, New York disappointed in 2025 by missing the playoffs entirely and has looked nothing like a playoff team in 2026 to this point. Given the payroll, the front office may not have much patience. And the biggest move it could make in the short term is making a managerial change.”
It’s an obvious scapegoat move because the Mets’ hitting coach should have been fired weeks ago. New York’s offense looks horrid, and almost like they don’t have to produce at any level. You can’t point to injuries anymore, as every 30 MLB teams have dealt with them at this point.

What Should the Mets Do with Carlos Mendoza?
GettyThe New York Mets are in free-fall mode, which could lead to them potentially parting ways with their manager Carlos Mendoza.
Carlos Mendoza didn’t trade away Brandon Nimmo or let the likes of Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso walk in MLB free agency, but this Mets team has several All-Star-level players who can play at a high level. Those include: Juan Soto, Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean, Marcus Semien, Mark Vientos, and Brett Baty.
The addition of Devin Williams has certainly led to a couple of losses, but it has gotten to a certain point where Carlos Mendoza continuously runs Williams out in the high-leverage moments, which haven’t worked out.
New York had a 12-game losing streak earlier in the season, and are now 10 games under .500. You have to think that if the Mets don’t turn things around by the end of May (at least a little bit), then Mendoza will be gone, and maybe owner Steve Cohen should think about hiring Alex Cora as his replacement.
