The Boston Red Sox avoided catastrophe this week, but Roman Anthony’s injury still forced the organization into a decision that reveals just how valuable the 21-year-old has already become.

Because once the pain in Anthony’s hand failed to improve, Boston stopped treating the situation like a short-term inconvenience. They started protecting one of the most important pieces of its future.

That shift led to the Red Sox placing Anthony on the 10-day injured list Thursday after several days of uncertainty surrounding the injury.

According to NESN, the club officially listed the issue as a wrist injury. Anthony later clarified the problem is actually a sprained ligament beneath his right ring finger. The exact wording matters less than the reality facing Boston right now.

The Red Sox simply could not afford to gamble with this one.

At first, the injury looked like it could become a disaster.

Anthony exited Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers immediately after taking a swing that suddenly caused sharp discomfort in his hand. The timing instantly created panic because Boston’s offense has already spent much of the season navigating injuries and lineup instability.

“Just took a swing and it didn’t feel good,” Anthony told reporters afterward. “As I came back in and went under to continue to swing, it just was painful.”

That explanation alone raised concerns about structural damage.

Instead, the Red Sox received the best possible news short of complete clearance. X-rays came back negative, eliminating fears of a fracture. An MRI later confirmed a sprain rather than a major long-term injury.

That outcome changed the entire tone surrounding Anthony’s timeline.

According to MLB.com, the Red Sox believe Anthony could return as soon as May 15. That day the club opens a road series against the Atlanta Braves. Anthony also sounded confident the absence will remain brief.

“For me, where I stand right now, how it’s gone on and the way it’s felt over the last few days, when the IL stint is over, I plan to be in that game the next day,” Anthony said.

Boston clearly hopes that confidence proves accurate.

Anthony’s raw numbers do not fully explain why this injury created so much concern internally.

On paper, the rookie entered the IL hitting .229 with a .675 OPS and only one home run in 30 games. Those numbers look manageable to replace.

His overall approach tells a completely different story.

Anthony already drew 20 walks in only 130 plate appearances while consistently showing advanced strike-zone discipline rarely seen from players his age. The Red Sox view him as far more than another young outfielder trying to survive his first full season.

They view him as part of the organizational foundation.

That is why Boston immediately became cautious once the discomfort lingered for multiple days. Hand and wrist injuries can quietly derail hitters long after they technically return to the lineup. The Red Sox likely recognized that risking further aggravation in May would create unnecessary long-term danger.

The timing also increases pressure on Boston’s lineup depth.

Masataka Yoshida will likely absorb most of Anthony’s designated hitter at-bats while Ceddanne Rafaela handles a larger defensive role in center field alongside Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu. That alignment gives the Red Sox enough coverage defensively, but replacing Anthony’s plate discipline and lineup balance is far more difficult.

Boston entered the season believing its outfield depth was a luxury. Injuries are quickly turning that depth into a requirement.

The encouraging part for the Red Sox is that this story still appears manageable.

A week ago, Boston may have feared losing one of its cornerstone players for months. Now the organization is simply trying to make sure Anthony returns healthy enough to avoid this becoming a recurring issue later in the summer.

That makes the next several days critical.

If Anthony returns against Atlanta as expected, the Red Sox will likely view this as an early-season scare they successfully managed before it became something much worse.
