Allen Iverson Sends Strong Message to VJ Edgecombe Before Sixers-Celtics Game
Erik Anderso · 2026-04-25 · via Sports

Allen Iverson knows what VJ Edgecombe is about to feel in Philadelphia.

The 76ers legend gave Edgecombe a message about playoff basketball before Philadelphia hosted the Boston Celtics in Game 3, telling the rookie guard that the crowd, adrenaline and emotion of the postseason will feel “totally different” from the regular season.

“You wait to the playoff when your adrenaline going,” Iverson told Edgecombe in a recent video posted on Instagram. “The higher you get, higher you get, but it’s just the adrenaline, and then eventually during the game you can feel yourself coming into your own and calming down.”

The timing makes the conversation more than a feel-good franchise moment. Edgecombe is coming off a historic Game 2 performance in Boston, where he scored 30 points with 10 rebounds as the Sixers beat the Celtics 111-97 to tie the series at 1-1. Edgecombe became the youngest player in NBA history to post a 30-point, 10-rebound playoff game.

That gives Iverson’s advice real weight. Edgecombe is not just listening to a Hall of Famer talk about the past. He is entering the kind of charged Sixers playoff environment that helped define Iverson’s own legacy in Philadelphia.

Allen Iverson Told VJ Edgecombe the Sixers Crowd Will Feel ‘Totally Different’

Iverson’s message centered on the emotional rhythm of a playoff game.

The Hall of Fame guard told Edgecombe that the early surge of energy can feel overwhelming, but that a player eventually settles into the moment.

“Eventually during the game you can feel yourself coming into your own and calming down,” Iverson said, according to the transcript.

Then Iverson pointed to the sound of a Philadelphia crowd responding to a big shot.

“It’s like every time you let it go, you can hear bang,” Iverson said. “You know what I mean? It’s crazy. We got the best fans ever, man. You watch, watch when we get to the playoffs. It’s going to be totally different. Remember what I tell you?”

For Edgecombe, that is not generic advice. Boston can adjust defensively. Philadelphia’s crowd can lift the Sixers, but it can also raise the emotional temperature for a young player in his first postseason.

Iverson was essentially telling Edgecombe to expect the adrenaline, embrace the crowd and then let the game slow down.

Allen Iverson’s Sixers Legacy Still Shapes Moments Like This

Iverson remains one of the most important players in 76ers history, which is why even a short conversation with a rookie carries meaning.

NBA.com lists Iverson with career averages of 26.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists across his NBA career. He was the No. 1 pick in the 1996 NBA draft and became one of the defining guards of his era despite being listed at 6 feet and 165 pounds.

His résumé is not just about scoring. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame lists Iverson as an 11-time NBA All-Star, seven-time All-NBA selection, four-time scoring champion and 2001 MVP. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.

For Sixers fans, though, the connection runs deeper than awards. Iverson’s best Philadelphia years were built on a bond with the city’s crowd. That is the part of his advice Edgecombe cannot get from a scouting report.

How Old Is Allen Iverson?

Allen Iverson is 50 years old as of April 2026.

Iverson was born on June 7, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia, according to his Basketball Hall of Fame profile.

When Did Allen Iverson Retire?

Iverson officially announced his retirement in October 2013.

His final NBA stint came with the Sixers during the 2009-10 season, though he later played professionally in Turkey before formally retiring.

What Is Allen Iverson’s Net Worth?

Allen Iverson’s net worth is commonly estimated at $1 million by Celebrity Net Worth, but that figure should be treated as an estimate rather than a confirmed accounting of his finances.

Iverson’s financial story is often discussed alongside his long-running Reebok relationship. In 2023, Reebok appointed Iverson as vice president of Reebok Basketball, with Shaquille O’Neal named president of the basketball division.

Edgecombe is only beginning to learn that part of the job. Iverson already lived it.
