Oilers linked to Binnington

The Edmonton Oilers are hoping this is the year they finally breakthrough in the playoffs and take home the Stanley Cup. They have come close the last two seasons as they have lost both years in the final to the Florida Panthers.

The position on the Oilers that is once again the topic of discussion in this postseason is the goaltending. Edmonton has struggled in net throughout the Connor McDavid era as they have lacked having an elite starting netminder in the crease.

They have made a trade this year in an attempt to finally solve that issue. They moved on from Stuart Skinner in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins that saw them receive fellow netminder Tristan Jarry in return. Unfortunately for Edmonton, Jarry has not been the upgrade in goal that they have been looking for.

For now the Oilers are rolling with a tandem in net that includes Jarry, Connor Ingram and Calvin Pickard. They are hoping this rotation will be enough to get the job done in these playoffs. If not, they have to look elsewhere for future options.

Jordan Binnington Linked to Oilers

If the Oilers decide to make a change this summer in net, insider Elliotte Friedman has connected them to a potential Jordan Binnington acquisition on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

Binnington has one year left on his current deal with the St. Louis Blues. He is coming off of a rough season that saw him post a 13-20-7 record with a 3.33 GAA (Goals Against Average) and .873 SP% (Save Percentage). Those were career low numbers across the board for the 32-year old Canadian.

This rough campaign saw Binnington’s usual starter job in St. Louis taken by Joel Hofer as the 25-year old outperformed him as the season wore along and earned more starts over time.

To be fair to Binnington, he also had a poor Blues team playing in front of him that missed the postseason. A change in scenery to a winning team in Edmonton could do wonders for him.

Oilers Need Stability in Net

The Oilers desperately need stability in net, this cannot continue to be a problem for them if they want to win a Stanley Cup during McDavid’s time as an Oiler. But would Binnington be the upgrade they need in the crease?

Binnington’s best days are clearly behind him. But he does have experience and a clutch factor in him that could come in handy for this team come playoff time. Binnington has a Stanley Cup win on his resume, having been a key reason behind the Blues 2019 championship run. He has also represented his nation of Canada on the big stage. He was a backbone behind their 2025 Four Nations win. Although, they came up short for gold in the 2026 Olympics.

If the Oilers decide to make another change in net depending on how this postseason plays out, Binnington would at least be a viable option to consider. He also likely would not take much to acquire at this stage of his career.

Binnington has amassed a 186-136-43 record in his 377 game regular season career in the NHL. In his the postseason, he has registered a 23-19-5 record.
