The New York Rangers might want to think twice about trading Vincent Trocheck this summer, as the figure out their retool.

The ongoing chatter surrounding the New York Rangers includes a potential Vincent Trocheck trade. Leading up to the 2026 NHL trade deadline, the speculation was that the Blueshirts would move Trocheck.

For a while, it seemed like that would be the case. The Rangers reportedly had a deal in place with the Minnesota Wild. However, the Wild balked at the purported asking price for Trocheck. The deal fell through, and the 32-year-old remained in Manhattan.

That said, a major storyline could be that the Blueshirts could circle back to trade discussions involving Trocheck. It isn’t crazy to believe that could be the case. But the fact of the matter is that trading Trocheck won’t be an easy task.

In fact, the Rangers might do well to hold onto Trocheck this summer. The rationale behind that assertion is simple. Trocheck had an immense trade value at the deadline. Teams desperately seeking to add for a Stanley Cup run were in on the former third-round pick from the 2011 NHL Draft.

The situation, nevertheless, led to GM Chris Drury overplaying his hand. That outcome also hurt Drury’s chances of pulling off a trade this summer. The high asking price will be fresh in teams’ minds. And it’s not like Drury will back down at this point.

Unless a team like the LA Kings, with the loss of Anze Kopitar, decides to pull the trigger on such a deal, it just wouldn’t make sense to trade Trocheck during the summer.

Rangers Could Use Trocheck in their Retool

The narrative that Rangers management and ownership have wanted to create is that the club’s core is poised for a quick turnaround. If that’s indeed the plan, ditching Trocheck just doesn’t make sense. Unless the Blueshirts can bring in another piece that could contribute immediately, jettisoning Trocheck just doesn’t make sense.

If anything, the Rangers would dig themselves into a deeper hole by dumping Trocheck. If the return involved numerous draft picks and prospects, the move would signal a rebuild and not a retool.

But there’s an even more powerful reason to hold onto Trocheck for now.

Trocheck Holds a No-Trade Clause

Unless Trocheck’s representation hands the Rangers a list of trade destinations this summer, the club may do well to wait. Trocheck might not be ready to leave New York just yet. Perhaps the circumstances just aren’t there for this deal to happen at this moment.

Perhaps those circumstances may become more evident during the season. Potentially, another disastrous start could push all sides to the brink. At that point, Trocheck may be more amenable to signing off on a trade.

Meanwhile, teams dealing with injuries and inconsistency could be motivated to pay up in hopes of saving their seasons. There might be teams like the Utah Mammoth or Anaheim Ducks that are on the younger side, and believe that a piece like Trocheck could put them over the top.

There might be a club that falls painfully short in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. So, they could seek to add a major piece next season, should they feel the need to plug a hole in their lineup.

It will be interesting to see what rumors emerge during the summer. But if nothing substantial materializes, the Rangers might do well by just waiting to trade Trocheck.
