Relief pitcher Luke Weaver reacted after the New York Mets suffered another loss, saying that “everybody wants to be the hero” on the team.

Weaver, who signed with the Mets this offseason after a three-year run with the crosstown New York Yankees, struggled on Thursday afternoon in a blown save against the Washington Nationals. The Mets brought Weaver into the game in the eighth inning, hoping he could hold down a 4-3 lead, but the Nationals were able to scratch two runs off him, ultimately winning the game 5-4. The Mets lost yet another series and dropped to a horrendous 10-21 on the season. They are not only the worst team in the National League East, but have the worst record in MLB.

Luke Weaver Speaks to the Media After the Loss

Following his second blown save of the season, Weaver spoke to the New York media about where he and the Mets are at right now. He said he was at a loss for words, admitting he had thought about what he was going to say to reporters even before they put the microphones in front of his face.

“I’ve just been sitting here trying to think, honestly, about what to say to you guys, and what you’re even going to ask, and trying to come up with something. I think at the end of the day, this pursuit of perfection is just the ultimate pressurized failure mindset. I think it just becomes everybody wants to be the hero because we care and we want to win, really, really badly,” Weaver said.

“I just don’t think success lives in that realm. It truly doesn’t. I think the freedom with which we play day-to-day is kind of being suffocated a little bit. I just want to do my job, it’s that simple. There’s moments that feel really close, and then there’s one mistake that magnifies our situation.

“Of course, I do feel the weight of the world and feel like I let the team down, but I do feel like I’m in a good spot. We sit there and tell you guys, ‘it’ll come, it’s a game, it’s the law of averages,’ all these things. But at the end of the day, those words just don’t hold the same weight as you go day after day. I think the encouragement, the motivation to pursue being the best person you can be, and the best baseball player you can be, is the only answer. And until then, I understand the grievances from the outsiders.”

Mets Searching for Answers

The Mets just can’t seem to figure things out, and time is running out quickly. The team is already 11 games below .500, and there is no reason to think they will be able to turn things around based on how poorly they are playing right now. Yes, on paper, this Mets team is talented, and its massive payroll shows just how many veteran, proven players are on the 26-man roster. But nothing seems to be going right for the Mets, and they may soon be forced to make some big changes.

With yet another series loss in the books, do not be surprised if the Mets relieve manager Carlos Mendoza of his duties. Even if it’s ultimately on the players, the skipper may take the fall for the team’s bad start to the year.
