Cristiano Ronaldo continues to lead the race for the most official goals in football history as the Portugal captain closes in on the 1,000-goal milestone ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 41-year-old forward currently has 972 official goals for club and country, maintaining a significant lead over longtime rival Lionel Messi, who recently reached 910 career goals after scoring for Inter Miami against the Portland Timbers in MLS play.

Ronaldo’s latest season with Al-Nassr has kept him firmly atop the all-time scoring list. His career totals include 451 goals for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus, 126 for Al-Nassr, five for Sporting CP, and 143 for Portugal.

Messi, meanwhile, has scored 672 goals for Barcelona, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, 90 for Inter Miami, and 116 for Argentina. The Argentine forward also added another assist in Inter Miami’s recent victory, continuing his strong form ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

The goal race between the two football icons remains one of the sport’s biggest storylines as both players prepare for what is expected to be their sixth and final FIFA World Cup appearance.

Ronaldo’s scoring consistency across multiple leagues and competitions has helped separate him from every other player in football history.

The Portugal captain remains the all-time leader in international men’s football with 143 goals in 226 appearances. He is also one of only six male players to appear in five FIFA World Cups and is now set for a record sixth tournament after being selected in Portugal’s provisional squad.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez confirmed Ronaldo’s inclusion ahead of the competition. Martinez also referenced the emotional importance of the squad following the death of Diogo Jota last year.

“He is our strength, our joy,” Martinez said. “Losing Diogo was an unforgettable and very difficult moment, but the very next day it was up to all of us to fight for Diogo’s dream and for the example he always set in our national team.”

Portugal will open its World Cup campaign against DR Congo on June 17 before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

Ronaldo enters the tournament after another difficult club setback, with Al-Nassr losing 1-0 to Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League 2 final on May 16. The Saudi Pro League finale against Damac Club represents his final opportunity to win silverware this season.

Despite that disappointment, Ronaldo’s individual scoring numbers continue to define his career. His longevity at the highest level has allowed him to maintain distance in the race toward 1,000 goals.

Messi remains Ronaldo’s closest challenger after scoring his 910th career goal during Inter Miami’s recent win over the Portland Timbers.

The Argentine forward now has 12 MLS goals this season and continues to deliver for Inter Miami ahead of the Club World Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Messi’s recent form has fueled discussion about another deep international run with Argentina. Since winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Messi has added another Copa America title while continuing to play a central leadership role for his national team.

Speaking after Argentina’s elimination from the 2019 Copa America, Messi said of the emerging squad, “I don’t know what it will be like, but I felt very good with this group.”

He later added, “Our group started emerging in 2019 Copa America, during the game against Brazil.”

Argentina will begin its World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16, followed by matches against Austria and Jordan in Group J.

Messi’s move to Inter Miami in 2023 has also increased his influence in North America ahead of the World Cup. A New Jersey township recently renamed part of Sherman Avenue as “Leo Messi Way” to honor the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Still, the focus surrounding Messi and Ronaldo remains centered on their extraordinary longevity and scoring records.
