Head Coach Todd Golden of the Florida Gators celebrates with the team after defeating the Tennessee Volunteers in the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament Championship game at Bridgestone Arena on March 16, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee.

A plethora of potential replacements for Steve Kerr have emerged in recent days in light of the legendary coach’s uncertain future with the Golden State Warriors.

One of the more surprising – and intriguing – names that has emerged is University of Florida head coach Todd Golden.

Todd Golden Seemingly Shoots Down Idea of Leaving Florida to Coach Warriors

Golden has been the head coach in Florida since 2022, and he led the Gators to a National Title in 2025. As a result, he appears poised to take a step up to the professional ranks. However, that might not be what he’s looking to do.

While speaking with media members, Golden seemingly shot down Golden State’s interest by expressing his intention to continue coaching at Florida.

“I’m definitely planning on coaching the Gators,” Golden said.

The initial report of Golden State’s interest in Golden came from Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, who pointed to Golden’s relationship with the Lacob family as a main factor in the Warriors’ interest in the college coach.

From O’Connor:

“If Steve Kerr leaves, the Warriors will pursue Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden, according to my league sources.

Golden is the coach that they’re targeting, and that’s in part because the Lacob family has a relationship with him. Golden was the head coach of the San Francisco Dons for three years before he went to Florida and won a national title there.

They, they’ve been together. They’ve, they’ve had lunches together. Those guys know each other, and Golden is, is a very, very talented young head coach. And so, I think for the Warriors, Golden would be near the top of their list, if not at the top of the list.”

Steve Kerr Expected to Make Decision in Near Future

Obviously, we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here, as it’s not even a guarantee that the Warriors job will be open. There’s certainly a possibility that Kerr could sign an extension with the Warriors and continue on in his current role. However, it definitely feels like things are trending towards his tenure in the Bay Area coming to an end.

Warriors star guard Draymond Green certainly seems to think so, at least. Green expressed some serious doubt about Kerr’s future in Golden State during a recent episode of his podcast.

“Steph, myself, Steve shared a moment in what could be our last time playing with Steve as our coach. I’m happy we got to share that moment. He didn’t miss the moment. It was a big deal,” Green said. “I hope he’s our coach next year. You want my opinion, I think not just because it just feels like that. It felt like that was it.”

Kerr is expected to meet with Golden State’s brass in the near future and make a decision regarding his future with the organization at that point in time. If the Warriors job actually becomes open, perhaps Golden will change his stance about wanting to continue his career in college, as opposed to the pros.
