Lakers Get Massive Kevin Durant Update Ahead of Pivotal Game 5 vs Rockets

Kevin Durant watches from the sideline as his Game 5 status remains in doubt due to a lingering ankle injury.

The Los Angeles Lakers received a significant update on Kevin Durant a day before a pivotal Game 5, one that could shape both the series and the Western Conference playoff picture.

Speaking on SportsCenter on Tuesday, ESPN insider Shams Charania delivered the latest on Durant’s status — and it was not encouraging for Houston and a welcome development for the Lakers.

“Kevin Durant has missed the last couple of games with injuries. I’m told he’s expected to miss Game 5,” Charania reported. “He’s got a bone bruise in his sprained left ankle that’s led to stiffness, swelling, a lack of mobility. This is a two to three-week injury in the regular season. If he sits out Game 5, he’s going to have missed four or five games this series.”

Kevin Durant Injury Status Looms Over Lakers-Rockets Game 5

Durant’s continued absence represents a major development for a Rockets team already facing elimination pressure. The two-time NBA champion has been sidelined with a bone bruise in his left ankle — an injury that has proven more limiting than initially expected.

Houston coach Ime Udoka previously pointed to the bone bruise as the key issue.

“I think the bone bruise is the worst part about it,” Udoka said before Game 4. “They did all the treatment and rehab and pushed the swelling out, but the pain from the bone bruise is the main thing and limited mobility.”

The injury restricts lateral movement and explosiveness — critical elements of Durant’s scoring ability — making it difficult for him to return even as swelling has improved.

Lakers Look to Close Series After Game 4 Setback

While Durant’s status offers an edge on paper, the Lakers know they cannot rely on it alone.

Los Angeles missed its first opportunity to close the series in Game 4, falling 115-96 in Houston. LeBron James took responsibility after a difficult performance that included eight turnovers.

“It started with me, obviously,” James said. “My turnovers were unacceptable.”

The Lakers struggled offensively throughout the game, particularly in the second half when Houston pulled away with a dominant third quarter. James finished with 10 points on 2-for-9 shooting, failing to provide his usual offensive stability.

Deandre Ayton Ejection Adds to Lakers’ Frustration

The game also turned on a controversial moment involving Deandre Ayton, who was ejected after a Flagrant 2 foul on Alperen Sengun.

The call, upgraded after review, drew confusion from both sides.

“I know what I saw,” James said. “I think he was bracing… his arm slipped going up and then hit him in the head.”

Even Sengun expressed surprise at the decision.

“I didn’t expect them to eject him to be honest,” Sengun said. “I think it was a little bit soft.”

The sequence sparked multiple technical fouls and escalated tensions late in the game, further disrupting the Lakers’ rhythm.

Lakers Face Added Pressure With Thunder Awaiting

Even as they remain one win from advancing, the stakes around Game 5 have grown.

The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder have already swept the Phoenix Suns, securing extra rest and a head start on second-round preparation.

That development adds urgency for Los Angeles. Closing out the series quickly would allow the Lakers to regroup and recover before a likely matchup with a fully rested Thunder squad. If the series drags on, the Lakers risk entering the next round at a clear disadvantage in both rest and momentum.

Lakers Still in Position to Advance as Austin Reaves Return Looms

Despite the Game 4 loss, the Lakers remain in control of the series with a 3-1 lead heading back to Los Angeles.

The 2026 NBA Playoffs first-round series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets resumes with a pivotal Game 5 on Wednesday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m. PT (10:00 p.m. ET) on ESPN.

Game 5 at Crypto.com Arena presents another opportunity to close out Houston — and avoid extending the series while managing their own injury concerns.

Austin Reaves remains sidelined with a Grade 2 oblique strain but is optimistic to return in Game 5, according to Charania, while Luka Doncic has yet to return. If Reaves returns, he is expected to be on a minutes restriction.

What Kevin Durant Update Means for Lakers

Durant’s expected absence removes one of the Rockets’ most dangerous offensive weapons, but it does not guarantee an easy path forward.

Houston showed in Game 4 that it can compete — and win — without him, fueled by balanced scoring and defensive pressure.

For the Lakers, the message is clear:

Finish the job or face a much tougher road ahead.
