The San Francisco Giants are making a roster change to help give the team a boost. The move, however, does not involve their lackluster offense. At the moment, the Giants are averaging just 3.34 runs scored per game in the 2026 season. This particular figure is the lowest average among all Major League Baseball teams.

San Francisco’s offensive woes continued on April 28, as the club was shut out by the Philadelphia Phillies. Not only were the Giants unable to score on the night, but they also only recorded two hits. Along with the lack of runs, the team ranks 29th in the league in OPS (.654) and 26th in slugging (.365).

Instead, reporter Francys Romero is claiming that San Francisco is calling up reliever Gregory Santos. According to Romero, the pitcher is expected to join the Giants in Philadelphia on April 29. The club will face the Phillies two more times before heading to St. Petersburg to face the Tampa Rays on May 1.

Santos previously made his MLB debut with the Giants back in 2021. After spending two seasons mostly in the minors of the organization, the pitcher moved on to the Chicago White Sox for the 2023 campaign. Santos recorded his most successful big-league season that year, posting a 3.39 ERA over 66 innings. He eventually played two seasons with the Seattle Mariners before rejoining the Giants on a minor league deal in December.

So far this season, Santos has been sharp for AAA Sacramento. The reliever has recorded a 2.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in eight appearances for the minor league club. Most of his game time with Sacramento in 2026 has come in the later innings. In fact, he has finished six of his eight total games with the team.

News of Santos’ promotion comes after fellow reliever Blade Tidwell threw 47 pitches against the Phillies on April 28. The San Francisco Giants also do not have an off day until Thursday, May 7. Because of this, the club will need its bullpen to remain as fresh as possible for the next week or so.

Interestingly enough, Santos is not currently on San Francisco’s 40-man roster. As a result, the Giants will have to remove a player before the reliever can officially join the team. Around the Foghorn’s Jeff Young has speculated that Santos may have a May 1 opt-out clause in his contract. If so, the pitcher could have told the club that he would leave the organization if he was not given another chance before this date.

San Francisco’s Bullpen a Rare Bright Spot in 2026

While the San Francisco Giants are struggling to start the 2026 season, their bullpen has actually been solid. In fact, their combined 3.03 ERA currently ranks third-best among all MLB teams. The club’s relievers also rank high in opposing batting average (fourth) and WHIP (seventh).

Santos will be San Francisco’s 11th different relief pitcher on the campaign. The veteran is able to hit 100 MPH on the radar, but his fastball typically sits between 97 and 98. Giants fans will be hoping that Santos can build on his recent success with AAA Sacramento to boost the big league club.
