Jayson Tatum shoots over Joel Embiid during Celtics vs 76ers playoff matchup

Jayson Tatum rises for a jumper over Joel Embiid as the Boston Celtics face the Philadelphia 76ers in a first-round playoff matchup.

The Boston Celtics now have clarity on Joel Embiid — and the timing could shape the direction of their first-round series.

Joel Embiid Ruled Out for Game 3 vs Celtics

According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, Embiid has officially been ruled out for Friday night’s Game 3 matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

“Joel Embiid has been ruled out for tonight’s game,” Bontemps reported. “He met with medical staff this afternoon and while doctors are pleased with his progress just two weeks removed from surgery, he has not yet been cleared to play.”

The decision confirms that Boston will again face a short-handed Philadelphia team — but it also raises the stakes to capitalize before Embiid potentially returns.

Earlier Game-Time Buzz Ends With Final Decision

The final ruling followed a day of uncertainty.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on NBA Today that Embiid had participated in shootaround and was expected to test his availability closer to tip-off.

That created the possibility of a game-time decision — one that ultimately landed on the cautious side as the 76ers prioritized recovery.

Celtics Presented With Critical Opportunity

For Boston, Embiid’s continued absence presents a clear opening.

The Celtics entered the series as favorites but allowed momentum to slip after dropping Game 2, giving Philadelphia renewed life.

Without Embiid anchoring the middle, Boston has an opportunity to assert itself inside — something it has yet to fully do through the first two games.

Tale of Two Games Defines Series So Far

Through two games, the series has been defined by dramatic swings.

After holding Philadelphia to 39% shooting and just 4-of-23 from three-point range in Game 1, Boston saw a completely different 76ers team in Game 2.

Philadelphia caught fire from deep, hitting 19 of 39 three-point attempts (49%) while shooting 48% overall in a 111-97 victory that evened the series.

The surge was led by rookie V.J. Edgecombe, who delivered 30 points and 10 rebounds — becoming the first rookie since Tim Duncan in 1998 to post a 30-10 playoff performance.

Tyrese Maxey added 29 points, while Paul George chipped in 19 as the 76ers leaned on balanced scoring.

Defensive Lapses, Turnovers Hurt Celtics in Game 2

Boston’s issues went beyond shot-making variance.

After placing all five starters in double figures in Game 1, the Celtics struggled to generate balanced offense in Game 2. Only Jaylen Brown (36 points) and Jayson Tatum (19) reached double figures, as Philadelphia tightened defensively.

Turnovers also proved costly. Boston committed 13, leading to 16 Philadelphia points — including during a decisive stretch in the second half.

The Celtics briefly cut the deficit to two before an 11-0 76ers run swung the game out of reach.

Celtics Frontcourt Still Searching for Impact

Neemias Queta, Boston Celtics

GettyNeemias Queta of the Boston Celtics is a non-factor so far despite Joel Embiid’s absence.

Boston’s interior rotation remains under scrutiny — even without Embiid on the floor.

Neemias Queta has averaged 10.5 points and 4.0 rebounds through the first two games, but his impact has fluctuated, including an uneven Game 2 despite solid efficiency.

Meanwhile, Nikola Vucevic has played a limited bench role, contributing nine points and five rebounds in 18 minutes in Game 2. The veteran has provided steady but modest production, as Boston continues searching for a more impactful presence inside.

Window May Close With Embiid Return Looming

Despite missing Game 3, Embiid’s progress remains encouraging.

Doctors are reportedly pleased with his recovery, and increased on-court work suggests a return could come as soon as Game 4.

That puts added pressure on Boston to respond now.

Game 3 Becomes Defining Moment for Celtics

With the series tied 1-1, Game 3 represents a pivotal opportunity.

Boston can regain control — or risk falling behind just as Philadelphia prepares to potentially reintroduce its franchise centerpiece.

The Celtics have already seen both extremes in this series.

Now, they need to prove which version of their team will define it.
