The Los Angeles Dodgers revealed why Edwin Diaz wasn't used on Tuesday, April 14, against the New York Mets.

The Los Angeles Dodgers did some roster shuffling in terms of their bullpen before Sunday’s contest against the Atlanta Braves.

One of those moves included moving Edwin Diaz to the 60-day IL with his elbow injury. Diaz had some loose bodies removed in his elbow, and when the original news broke, the reported recovery time was a few months.

CBSSports wrote (on May 10):

“The transaction is merely a procedural move that clears a spot on the 40-man roster and won’t have any bearing on Diaz’s timeline to return to action. Diaz underwent surgery April 22 to remove loose bodies from his elbow and isn’t expected to be available until after the All-Star break.”

The Dodgers signed Edwin Diaz to a record-breaking three-year, $69 million contract before the season, and he’s pitched just 6 innings this season to this point.

As a part of the roster move that transferred Edwin Diaz to the 60-day Injured List, Los Angeles called up RHP Wyatt Mills, and optioned Paul Gervase.

The reports indicate that Diaz is supposed to begin throwing this week, but he’s waiting on the stitches in his elbow to fully heal.

Edwin Diaz is a 3X All-Star reliever who formerly pitched for the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made it a big point of emphasis over the past few seasons to ensure that their bullpen is strong. That has led to many lucrative free agent signings like Blake Treinen, Tanner Scott, and Edwin Diaz (this offseason).

As of right now, here is the list of Dodgers relievers that are on the Injured List: Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart, Ben Casparius, Jake Cousins, Brusdar Graterol, and Edwin Diaz.

Of course, all of those names aren’t exactly notable, but it just shows some of the players they are without.

As for the closing situation, manager Dave Roberts has seemed to be content with using a ‘closer-by-committee’ system.

Dodgers Right Now…

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost their Sunday afternoon contest to the Braves, which dropped the Dodgers to 24-16.

However, even with the loss, the Dodgers still remain 0.5 games ahead of the San Diego Padres for first place in the National League West. Los Angeles will welcome the San Francisco Giants for a four-game series starting on Monday.

With this Edwin Diaz news, and the bullpen being shaky as of late, it’s fair to assume that the Dodgers will think about making a trade for another arm soon.
