Kris Knoblauch believes fatigue was a factor in Oilers early playoff exit

The Edmonton Oilers 2026 playoff run did not meet expectations as the squad suffered a surprise first round exit courtesy of the Anaheim Ducks as they were eliminated in Game 6 last night in a 5-2 loss on the road.

This was an unusually short playoff stint for the Oilers as the team has been used to going on deep postseason runs in recent seasons, having made it all the way to the Stanley Cup final the previous two seasons.

The post-mortem diagnosis begins when it comes to figuring out where it went wrong for the Oilers this year. Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch believes injuries and a heavy workload played a part in their struggles during this matchup.

Kris Knoblauch Believes Fatigue Has Caught Up to the Oilers

Knoblauch was asked in the Oilers postgame presser on his view towards how the postseason unraveled for his team. He stated the Oilers “weren’t ready” for this years edition of the playoffs. He thinks the high amount of games this squad has played in recent years has caught up to them.

The Oilers have played a lot of hockey these past few seasons of the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl era. In 2022, they made it to the western conference final where they were swept by the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado went on to win the Stanley Cup. In 2023, they made it to the second round where they were ousted by the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas went on to win the Stanley Cup. And in 2024 and 2025 Edmonton also lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers… in the actual final itself.

This first round exit did not meet the standards of a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. For Knoblauch, this is the first time he has failed to reach the Stanley Cup final during his time at the helm of the Oilers bench since he took over in 2023.

Knoblauch also stated later in the media session that he thinks this longer offseason could be a much needed break for this group. He hopes this will give them a chance to return next season refreshed and motivated to have a better regular season and deeper playoff stretch.

The Pressure is On for Oilers to Win with McDavid

With this latest miss, this is now 11 seasons of McDavid that the Oilers have failed to bring home the Stanley Cup. He signed a short term two year contract extension prior to this 25-26 campaign that kicks in starting next season.

The pressure is on in Edmonton to win with McDavid during these next two seasons. If they fail to go the distance and win the championship, could he be on the move when his deal expires in 2028?

It is up to general manager Stan Bowman to have a big offseason and reload this unit in the hopes of a bounce back in 2027. Both McDavid and Knoblauch have alluded to “holes” in the lineup that need to be patched. How Oilers management responds to this shortcoming will go a long way towards if this team can comeback stronger.
