The New York Mets soundly defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-4 during their day game at Citi Field. This win marked their first sweep of the season, and did so trailing by at least two runs in each game.

The last National League East last-place Mets have now improved their record to 18-25, after a red-hot 8-4 stretch in the month of May.

In today’s win, the Mets hit five home runs up and down the lineup. After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the third, A.J. Ewing hit his first career home run (405 feet) to right center igniting a fire under the Mets’ offense.

Brett Baty followed in the fourth, then Mark Vientos, Juan Soto, and Marcus Semien.

The Mets, who just a short time ago, held the worst record in the MLB, are finally starting to get things right again.

Social Media Reactions to Mets’ Sweep Over the Tigers

While the New York Mets are still a ways away from getting back to .500, their sweep over the Detroit Tigers pushes them into the right direction.

Not only did the Mets complete a much needed sweep, but did they so trailing 2-0 in the first two games, and 3-0 in the Thursday’s game. Their multi-run comeback in each game of a three-run+ series was only the third time in franchise history.

The Mets trailed in every game against the Tigers this series — yet still battled back to complete the sweep:

2-0 2-0 3-0

It marks just the third time in franchise history that the Mets have swept a series after trailing by multiple runs in every game.

“The Mets’ three-game sweep of the Tigers was their first of the season, first since August 2025,” Will Sammon of the Athletic wrote on X. “So far in May, they are 8-4, outscoring opponents 55-37. This is the best things have been around this team since Opening Day.”

The Mets have swept their first series of the season

Many fans took to X to show their support of their favorite struggling baseball team’s recent success:

@Jolly_Olive: METS SWEEP!! – Five HR? In this economy? – Nolan McLean way to battle!! – AJ Ewing dream debut series – Three comeback wins!! Nice – Vientos MORE loud contact Keep winning series. Do it.

@01Starblazer: Glad to see the Mets rallied today. I was at school & a Mets fan gave me the update when it was 3-3. Ewing and Benge are now the drivers of this offense and they both had a great series. Soto, Vientos and even Semien went deep. The Mets ace finally got run support. Nice win.#LGM

@MetsNewsMoves: Ballgame. Mets W! Sweep! Long road back to relevance but have to start somewhere. 5 home runs & 9 across for the bats, McLean settled down with a quality start, momentum on the Queens side as the Subway Series gets going tomorrow. #LGM

@HoffWFAN: This is the best time for the Mets to have the Subway series… This is the worst time for the Yankees to have the Subway series… I smell a sweep this weekend in Citi-Field!

Not only did the Mets pull off a sweep with all come-from-behind wins, Carson Benge delivered his first career walk-off hit on Wednesday night. The Mets look to keep rolling against the New York Yankees on Friday.

A.J. Ewing Records First Career Home Run in Mets’ Big Win

After making his MLB debut on May 12, A.J. Ewing has delivered on the biggest stage for the Mets.

In nine at-bats the last three games, Ewing is batting .333 with three hits, a home run, four runs, three RBIS, and a stolen base.

The 21-year-old recalled his first big league series as a dream come true, and says it was “awesome” hitting his first home run.

The Mets’ leading man Juan Soto, spoke to the media about Ewing’s performance, saying that he has brought the ‘energy’ the Mets needed during this rough patch of baseball.

Juan Soto says A.J. Ewing has brought the “energy” that the Mets have needed:

“He’s part of the young core, he’s a humble kid…he’s doing a great job out there”

“He’s part of the young core, he’s a humble kid…he’s doing a great job out there,” Soto said.

“That’s one of the things that we looked at when we signed here, how great was the farm system and how much talent is down there,” Soto said regarding the production from Ewing and Carson Benge. “To get to see it live is really cool to see.”
