The Golden State Warriors and forward Draymond Green will need to address the $27.67 million player option for the 2026-27 season.

The Golden State Warriors are in store for another eventful offseason after failing to get out of the Play-In Tournament in 2025-26. Their summer has started off in good fashion after re-signing head coach Steve Kerr to a two-year contract extension.

Among rumors of pursuing the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, Golden State will have to address Draymond Green’s $26.67 million player option he has for the 2026-27 season.

It would be a heavy cap hit for the Warriors to take on, especially if they want to stay in their win-now mentality. However, there will be ways around the deal. This will be something that Golden State will assess leading up to the June 29 deadline on Green’s decision, says ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.

“Green and the Warriors are open to discussing the idea of him opting out and restructuring his contract on a new two or three-year contract, sources said,” the insider wrote. “Doing so and keeping Green on a smaller contract in the range of $18 million to $20 million per season would save Golden State a lot when it comes to utilizing its own mid-level exception to upgrade the roster this offseason.”

Is Draymond Green Worth $27.67 Million?

The biggest assessment both the Warriors and Draymond Green will need to make is whether the 36-year-old is worth the $27.67 he would make if he opted in to the player option.

It’s safe to say that Green’s best years are behind him, but his defensive prowess and leadership remain strong for a Warriors team trying to get back into contention for a championship.

In 2025-26, Green was on the healthier side of the Warriors’ roster. Through 68 games, Golden State’s glue guy averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game on 41.8/32.6/70.2 shooting splits. Not the most satisfying numbers, but the chemistry he’s built with Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr throughout his 14-year career is what’s kept him around.

From Draymond Green’s perspective, making $27.67 million over a one-year span would be beneficial to him, but not to the Warriors. There’s still a chance that he will opt out and take a pay cut.

“The only way Green will opt out of his contract is if there is a firm and clear vision for what the team plans to do with the financial flexibility such a move would create,” Brett Siegel mentioned.

“Doing so and keeping Green on a smaller contract in the range of $18 million to $20 million per season would save Golden State a lot when it comes to utilizing its own mid-level exception to upgrade the roster this offseason.”

Are the Warriors Still Ring Chasing?

On paper, the Golden State Warriors have the traits of a championship-caliber franchise. Led by superstar guard Steph Curry, the Warriors have Jimmy Butler III, Draymond Green, and newly-acquired big man Kristaps Porzingis.

Each of these guys has talent that’s through the roof, but they’re all getting older. With age comes wear and tear on the body.

Last season, Curry played just 43 games with what was labeled as “runner’s knee,” Butler III was sidelined before the halfway mark of the regular season after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL, and Porzingis played 32 total games between the Atlanta Hawks and Warriors while dealing with a flurry of injuries of his own.

With this being said, the Golden State has flirted with the idea of acquiring another top-tier talent to help get through their hump.

The Warriors have been linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and even LeBron James. They are expected to continue their pursuit of another superstar this summer.

It will be interesting to see what the Warriors’ roster will look like by the start of next season. Especially if Draymond Green can play his part in helping clear cap space to acquire a player that would encourage Golden State’s win-now mindset.
