Donovan Mitchell’s Brutal Crossover Leaves Tobias Harris Hurt in Cavaliers Loss

Donovan Mitchell did everything possible to keep the Cleveland Cavaliers alive Thursday night. It still wasn’t enough.

The Detroit Pistons survived another explosive scoring night from Mitchell and escaped with a 2-0 series lead after grinding out a physical playoff win. Cade Cunningham controlled the fourth quarter, while Detroit’s defense frustrated Cleveland throughout the night. Still, one moment from Mitchell completely hijacked the conversation.

The Cavaliers guard delivered one of the nastiest crossover sequences of the postseason against Tobias Harris in the first quarter, Essentially Sports reports. Mitchell chained together multiple violent dribble moves before exploding toward the lane, leaving Harris stumbling and grabbing at his hip after trying to recover.

“We’ve seen an ankle breaker… is this the first hip breaker?” the broadcast crew joked during the replay.

Fans immediately debated whether Mitchell clipped Harris’ knee during the drive. Replays showed slight contact, but Harris already looked tangled up from trying to mirror Mitchell’s sudden changes of direction. The veteran forward collapsed awkwardly before trainers briefly checked on him.

Fortunately for Detroit, Harris stayed in the game.

Tobias Harris Responds After Crossover

What made the moment even more impressive for Harris was how quickly he recovered.

The 33-year-old answered with another productive playoff outing, finishing with 21 points, seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and two made three-pointers. Harris has now scored at least 20 points in seven straight playoff games, becoming one of Detroit’s steadiest contributors during its surprising postseason run.

Mitchell finished with 31 points, but Cleveland struggled to generate consistent offense outside of its star guard. The Cavaliers shot just 7-for-32 from three-point range as Detroit’s aggressive defense repeatedly disrupted their rhythm.

“Unfortunately, it was not a night where we shot the ball well — 7 of 32 from 3,” Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said afterward.

Atkinson also pointed to Cleveland’s sluggish openings as another concern, per ESPN.

“I don’t know what it is with the start of games,” Atkinson said. “They came out super aggressive of course, but it’s the playoffs. Obviously, we haven’t figured that one out. Still back to the drawing board.”

Pistons Continue Winning Formula

Detroit’s confidence continues to grow with every game.

Even with Ausar Thompson battling foul trouble and Isaiah Stewart limited for stretches, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff refused to abandon the physical identity that carried the Pistons through the postseason. Instead, Detroit kept pressuring Cleveland defensively and trusted its veterans to stabilize the offense.

That approach continues to pay off, especially with Harris stepping into a massive secondary role behind Cunningham.

“Confidence. There’s no insecurity in who he is,” Bickerstaff said of Harris. “When you don’t have those insecurities in the moment, you can play free. You trust the work that you have put in because you know how much time you’ve put in over the years to do what you do.”

The Pistons needed that production again because Jalen Duren still has not found consistent playoff rhythm offensively. Despite his breakout regular season, the young center has yet to score 20 points in any postseason game this year.

Instead, Detroit continues leaning on its veteran presence, defensive toughness, and Cunningham’s late-game control.

Now the series shifts to Cleveland for Game 3 on Saturday, where the Cavaliers suddenly face pressure despite Mitchell’s brilliance. The Pistons have now won five straight playoff games, and even a viral “hip breaker” moment from Mitchell could not slow their momentum.
