Alarming Stat Emerges After Chelsea’s FA Cup Final Loss to Man City

Chelsea made the trip to Wembley on Saturday with a chance to salvage something from a difficult season. A trophy would not have fixed everything, but it would have at least provided a moment to hold onto heading into the summer.

Instead, Manchester City made sure it was more of the same. Antoine Semenyo, born just a few miles from Stamford Bridge in west London, caressed Erling Haaland’s cross into the net late in the second half with a finish that was as cruel as it was sublime. A largely scrappy final was decided by one moment of individual brilliance.

For Chelsea, it was the worst possible way for it to end.

Seven and Counting

The defeat extended one of the most painful records in English football. Chelsea have now lost seven consecutive domestic cup finals. Seven opportunities to lift silverware. Seven defeats. The stat alone captures the frustration that has built inside this fanbase over the years.

This was not a case of Chelsea being outplayed from start to finish. Rather, the match was tight and scrappy for long periods. But tight and scrappy has a habit of ending badly for the Blues in finals, and Saturday was no different.

Meanwhile, Semenyo’s goal was his first major final contribution and immediately placed him among the more memorable FA Cup final goalscorers in recent history. For Chelsea, however, it was simply the latest in a long line of painful Wembley memories.

City’s win was their eighth FA Cup triumph and their second piece of silverware this season, having already beaten Arsenal in the League Cup final in March. As a result, Pep Guardiola has now won 20 trophies in his decade as City manager.

Chelsea have now lost SEVEN domestic cup finals in a row. 🚨

A Season to Forget for Chelsea

The FA Cup final defeat rounded off what has been a turbulent campaign at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Maresca departed by mutual consent in January, with Liam Rosenior brought in as his replacement before being sacked himself in April. From there, Calum McFarlane took interim charge for the final stretch. Two managers gone before the season was even over. Chelsea will end the campaign trophyless, with a few Premier League fixtures still to play before the curtain finally comes down.

Meanwhile, the fanbase has been vocal about their frustration. The ownership has spent heavily over recent seasons without producing the sustained success that investment was supposed to deliver. Yet seven consecutive domestic cup final defeats is not a run of bad luck. It is a pattern.

Something has to change. And the hierarchy knows it.

What Comes Next for Chelsea

GettyXabi Alonso, Former Head Coach of Real Madrid.

The summer will be defined by what Chelsea do in the transfer window and, more importantly, who leads the club into next season. The managerial search that began with Rosenior’s sacking has been ongoing for weeks, with several names considered before one emerged as the clear preference.

According to RMC Sport, Chelsea have now reached an agreement in principle with Xabi Alonso to become the club’s next permanent manager. The 44-year-old guided Bayer Leverkusen to the domestic double in 2024 and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young managers in world football. He will be given at least a two-year contract and, crucially, an active role in shaping the squad this summer.

If the appointment is confirmed, it would represent the most significant statement of intent from Chelsea’s ownership in years. Seven consecutive domestic cup final defeats demand a response. And Alonso arriving at Stamford Bridge would be exactly that.

🚨 BREAKING: Xabi Alonso has accepted to become Chelsea next manager, HERE WE GO! 🔵🔜

The agreement is set to be completed.

#CFC prepare official announcement for the upcoming days, but Xabi said YES. 💣

Final Word

Seven finals. Seven defeats. The record speaks for itself.

Chelsea need a reset. The fanbase needs a reason to believe again. Trophies are the only thing that changes a narrative like this one.

Alonso has built winning cultures before. Stamford Bridge is waiting to see if he can do it again.
