The Atlanta Braves lost a franchise legend on Saturday when the team announced the passing of historic manager Bobby Cox. He was 84.
Here’s part of the message that the team released following the sad news:
“We are overcome with emotion on the passing of Bobby Cox, our treasured skipper. Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform. He led our team to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the unforgettable World Series title in 1995. His Braves managerial legacy will never be matched.”

Bobby Cox managed the Braves for 25 seasons and is a franchise icon/staple. Braves Country will mourn his death for now, but it’s a good time to reflect on all that he did for the Braves.
Here are some heartfelt reactions from social media after the Bobby Cox news broke.
Mark Bowman wrote (on May 9): “Bobby Cox’s fighting spirit will never be forgotten. It was incredible that he managed to crawl to his neighbor’s house to get help when he had his stroke in 2019. Before the Braves went to Philly for the 2023 NLCS, friends and family members were told to prepare their goodbyes. There was a sense he might be gone by the time the team returned to Atlanta. Then, just a few months’ ago, he survived a bout with COVID. He didn’t eat for a few days and then awoke one day and said, “I’m hungry.” He was an incredible man.”
One of the original (and best) player managers in the sport, Bobby Cox still holds the record for most career managerial ejections (158).

When Ted Turner stepped down with the Braves, he hired Bobby Cox, who went on to draft or trade for players like Chipper Jones and John Smoltz.
@grantmcauley: “Following the 1981 season, #Braves owner Ted Turner fired then manager Bobby Cox. Turner hired another future Hall of Famer to replace him (Joe Torre), but admitted he regretted the decision. He later said the top candidate to replace Bobby Cox would’ve been Bobby Cox himself.”

Bobby Cox is a Hall of Fame manager. He led the Atlanta Braves to the 1995 World Series and advanced to the Fall Classic five times. The Braves also won 14 straight National League East titles in his managerial tenure, which is hard to imagine.
He held a managerial record of 2504-2001, and spent four seasons managing the Blue Jays before moving on to be the skipper of the Braves.
Following the “worst-to-first” 1991 season, he led the team to unheralded success. His teams often faced criticism for high postseason loss rates after 2000, but he secured a World Series in 1995, and continued to lead the Braves to the playoffs in several years after that. He retired in 2010.
