Seattle Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh ended his 0-38 hitless streak in the team’s 10-2 win against the Houston Astros. Raleigh played well, delivering two hits, a walk, and three runs in the game. It marks the conclusion of a dark period in Raleigh’s career. Also one of the worst streaks for a player of his caliber in MLB history.

Before his hit in the top of the seventh inning, Raleigh’s hitless streak appeared as the longest for a player following a 40-home run season. His season batting line moves to .166/.249/.325 with seven home runs on the year.

With the win tonight, the Mariners move to 21-22 and hope to win the series against the Astros tomorrow. The road trip concludes on Thursday in Houston.

Mariners Overcome Raleigh Streak in Massive Team Effort

Other Mariners shined in Tuesday’s blowout of the Astros outside of Raleigh’s hitless streak ending. Dominic Canzone hit his first career grand slam in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-2. It became the decisive moment of the game as the Astros failed to respond offensively the rest of the night. Canzone had five RBIs overall in the game.

Tuesday also presented a four hit game from Randy Arozarena, driving in three runs and scoring four of his own. He hit a two run home run to begin the contest in the top of the second inning. Arozarena now hits .303/.389/.465 with four home runs for the season. He also drove in the run that allowed Raleigh to score after ending his hitless streak.

Likewise, Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo dominated as well, pitching six innings and striking out nine batters. He allowed two runs, four hits, and two walks to Houston. Woo’s season ERA moves to 3.91 on the season after two straight excellent starts.

Domingo González debuted in the major leagues today for the Seattle Mariners in the bottom of the ninth. Despite allowing a hit and a walk, he struck out his first batter and pitched a clean inning.

Bryce Miller Returns for Wednesday’s Game

Moving on from Raleigh’s hitless streak, the Mariners welcome back Bryce Miller as he starts Wednesday’s game against the Houston Astros. Despite being his first start of the season, the game also proves to be massively important for the Mariners future starting rotation plans. If Miller shows the special stuff he showcased in his rehab starts, Luis Castillo may move to the bullpen. While a piggy-back situation could occur, the Mariners may want to give Miller the reigns to be an excellent starter. Perhaps Castillo will be excellent out of the bullpen.

With the Mariners now over with Raleigh’s hitless streak, the team can move on to other issues to solve. However, the Mariners with back to back wins against the Astros shows that the upside of this roster. Even with injuries to the bullpen, the Mariners bullpen remains largely one of the better units in the MLB. Coming into tonight’s game, the Mariners ranked third in bullpen ERA.
