The New York Yankees are rolling right now. They’ve won six straight MLB games, sit atop the American League East, and will open up a three-game weekend series with the Houston Astros on Friday.

One very surprising development for the Yankees this season is the fact that they have performed so well without the likes of Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon in the rotation. Both starters should return sooner rather than later, and the Yankees actually made a Carlos Rodon announcement before the Astros game.

Carlos Rodon Set to Begin Rehab Assignment on Friday

Per the Yankees’ social media account: “Today, LHP Carlos Rodón commences a rehab assignment with High-A Hudson Valley.”

Carlos Rodon underwent surgery in the offseason to remove bone chips and a spur from his left elbow. After having a right hamstring tightness issue in early April, he has progressed to throwing in live batting practice and will not begin a rehab stint.

He’s not a player who will need a long time in the minors, as he’s a certified part of the Yankees rotation, but his starts at various minor league levels will be monitored closely.

Per FoulTerritoryTV, who recently spoke with Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Rodon is a little ahead of schedule:

“Aaron Boone says Carlos Rodón is “probably a little ahead” of Gerrit Cole in the rehab process. “Probably a couple of weeks for Carlos, and probably a little bit more than that for Gerrit. We’re certainly not going to rush anything, especially with Gerrit.”

Carlos Rodon’s Time with the Yankees

GettyThe New York Yankees shared an injury update on Carlos Rodon. The 33-year-old southpaw will begin a rehab assignment on Friday and is considered ‘ahead of schedule’, per Aaron Boone.

Before the 2023 season, Carlos Rodon signed a six-year, $162 million contract after back-to-back All-Star campaigns with the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants.

In 79 total starts and 434.2 innings in pinstripes, Carlos Rodon carries a flat 4.00 ERA with 462 strikeouts.

In 2025, he made 33 starts (share of MLB lead), and posted an ERA of 3.09 in 195.1 innings. That’s a big workload for a starter, so it’s no surprise that Rodon is sidelined to start this season. In 2024, he made 32 starts.

Rodon beginning his rehab stint is good news for their rotation, which has been stellar this season. When both Gerrit Cole and Rodon return, manager Aaron Boone and the Yankees’ front office will have decisions to make on who departs the rotation.
