Secretariat’s Legacy: Which 2026 Derby Horses Share Big R...

A horse walks in the barn area during morning workouts ahead of the running of the 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on April 30, 2026.

More than five decades after his legendary Triple Crown run, Secretariat is still shaping the Kentucky Derby. In a remarkable reminder of thoroughbred racing’s deep family roots, 19 of the 20 horses entered in the 2026 Kentucky Derby trace their bloodline back to the iconic champion known as Big Red.

Only one horse in this year’s field, Emerging Market, does not carry Secretariat somewhere in his lineage. Everyone else in Saturday’s starting gate at Churchill Downs can claim a genetic connection to one of the most celebrated racehorses in history.

That statistic speaks volumes about Secretariat’s enduring influence – not just as a racer, but as a stallion whose legacy continues to dominate the sport decades after his final race.

Why Secretariat Still Matters

Secretariat’s name remains synonymous with greatness. His 1973 Triple Crown campaign is still considered one of the greatest achievements in sports history, highlighted by a Kentucky Derby time of 1:59.40 that still stands as the track record at Churchill Downs.

Then came the unforgettable finish at the Belmont Stakes, where Secretariat delivered one of the most dominant performances ever witnessed in sports. As he pulled farther and farther away, track announcer Chick Anderson famously shouted, “Secretariat is alone. He is moving like a tremendous machine! He’s going to be the Triple Crown winner!”

The margin only kept growing. Secretariat crossed the wire 31 lengths in front, a gap so massive that television cameras struggled to keep him and the rest of the field in the same frame. His final time of 2:24 for 1 1/2 miles on dirt remains a world record.

Jockey Ron Turcotte later recalled hearing Anderson’s call and finally turning around to see where the other horses were. “The horse did it by himself,” Turcotte said. “I was along for the ride.”

How the 2026 Derby Field Connects to Secretariat

Secretariat is believed to have sired more than 660 foals, an extraordinary total that helped spread his genetics throughout the thoroughbred world. His offspring included champions such as Lady’s Secret and Risen Star.

But like many legendary sires, Secretariat’s deepest long-term impact came through his daughters. Strong broodmares often become the bridge that carries elite bloodlines into future generations, and that is exactly what happened here.

Lineage research into the 2026 Kentucky Derby field found that most of the connections run through two daughters of Secretariat: Terlingua and Weekend Surprise.

Terlingua, out of Crimson Saint, became one of the most influential mares in modern breeding circles. Weekend Surprise, out of Lassie Dear, also became enormously important as a producer. Their descendants appear repeatedly in pedigrees across this year’s Derby field.

Those family branches eventually connected with other elite bloodlines, including Storm Bird and Seattle Slew, creating generations of horses built from some of racing’s greatest names.

The Exception: Emerging Market

The lone exception in this year’s field is Emerging Market, arguably one of the most intriguing horses in the race. The unbeaten colt has raced only twice in his career, yet already owns a Louisiana Derby victory and enters Churchill Downs with significant upside.

Sired by Candy Ride and out of an Empire Maker mare, Emerging Market owns a pedigree built for stamina and the Derby’s demanding 1 1/4-mile distance. Trainer Chad Brown has come close in previous Derbies, while jockey Flavien Prat owns a Derby victory via disqualification in 2019.

The challenge is experience. No horse has won the Derby in his third career start since Leonatus in 1883, making Emerging Market a fascinating outlier both statistically and genetically.

Top Contenders Carry the Torch

Even the leading names in this year’s Kentucky Derby are part of that family tree. Top-ranked contenders Renegade and Albus reportedly trace back through Weekend Surprise while also carrying ties to Seattle Slew.

That is the modern thoroughbred blueprint: combine speed, stamina, toughness, and championship lineage from multiple all-time greats. Secretariat remains one of the pillars of that formula.

For bettors and pedigree handicappers, bloodlines are often part of the Derby conversation. While lineage alone cannot win races, it can provide clues about distance ability, maturity, and how a horse might handle the pressure of elite competition.
